MEMORANDUM TO: Edgar Smith
ce Bernard Barnes
Wes Pullen
FROM: c. D. Jackson
January 22, 1963
Project HOPE
I have your January 14th memo on the subject of whether
or not you should accept the invitation to join the Board
of Directors of the People to People Health Foundation.
I
feel very strongly that you should accept for two
reasons:
1.)
I consider that Time Inc. and LIFE are
committed to a continuing relationship
with Project HOPE. We have a continuing
editorial interest in it, and I see no
reason why we should not continue in the
foresecable future at least to give it
financial support. This is one case
where results are useful and visible both
on the bunanitarian and editorial fronts.
2.)
You have performed in an outstandingly
effective way as my right-hand man on
this operation from its beginning and
have, in fact, been "Mr. Project HOPE"
in my book.
Without your invaluable work I would not
have been able to carry on with this
project. Since I must now curtail my
schedule to some small extent, I will
need your help more than ever, and I
see no reason, therefore, why the title
and credit should not be publicly
acknowledged by having you listed on
their Board of Directors.

From all sides I head nothing but praise for the HOPE Cotillion,
and the resounding financial results are a speaking tribute
to the efficiency of the New York group.
My warmest thanks.
