WOMEN IN THE FEDERAL SERVICE 1959 The following list of 504 key women officials in the federal establishment dramatizes the expanding scope of women's responsi- bilities in Government service. Listings were obtained from the most recent editions of the Congressional Directory and Official Register of the United States, In addition, the director of personnel in each executive department or independent agency developed his own list for this survey, using his own set of criteria. Some selections are based on salary or grade, others on executive or policy=making duties of the job. With few exceptions the list is composed of full-time federal employees, nearly all in the upper federal pay brackets. IT MUST BE STRESSED THAT CHANGES IN THESE LISTS OCCUR ALMOST DAILY - BUT THE COMPILATION WILL GIVE AN IDEA OF THE TYPE OF POSITIONS WOMEN HAVE ACHIEVED.
