Situation report. MONTGOMERY.
Thank you for your outline plan dated 31st December and
letter. I suggest tactical victory within the sal ient is
going to take some little time to achieve and that there
will be heavy fighting. Also it is all bound to get
somewhat untidy in that area and I think we want to be
careful to ensure that the moment for changes in command
is wisely chosen. I also feel that after we have achieved
tactical victory in the salient there may be a considerable
interval before other offensive movements begin developing
though I think it is important to try and stage Operation
VERITABLE earliest possible. Apart from these few ideas
which occur to me I have no comments on the outline plan
and details can be worked out later on. You can rely on
me and all under my command to go all out 100% to implement
your plans.
