President Dwight D. Eisenhower,
I h e W h i t e H O u S e,
Washington, D. C.
Dear Mr. President:
It was a real privilege and an extraordinary honor for us
that our club's President, Howard W. Schmidt, was granted an in-
terview with you and President Lopez Mateos at Ciudad Acuña, Mexico.
We have been striving as hard as our meager resources and
abilities can carry us to promote our "PROJECT GOOD
,
a People-to-People Program of Mexican-America: Friendship. We
must confess that since we had been given no hopes whatever of
being granted an interview with you, we did not prepare a brochure
as complete and factual as we presented to President Lopez Mateos.
It is our belief that if a people-to-people program had been
started some time back with Cuba, Dr. Castro would never have been
successful in arousing the resentment of the Cubans against his next
door neighbors. While we feel that relations between the United
States and Mexico are at an all time high, we are taking no chances
in letting them deteriorate if we can help it and we shall continue
working at our top capacity to improve them even more.
We are pleased to enclose some newspaper clippings which may
be very revealing to you. We would like to state that our Lubbock
delegates were stopped many times on the streets of Ciudad Acuña by
very important persons and also by very humble ones: they all told us
that they were deeply touched by and thanked us for our efforts in
behalf of the poor, long meglected Mexican farm workers (Braceros).
There are endless possibilities on how to improve Mexican-American
friendship on a people-to-people basis and we sincerely hope that
this idea can be pursued further on a larger scale.
With warmest and kindest wishes for your continued good health,
we are as always,
Most appreciatively yours
Francisco Gonzalez
Program Coordinator
Project Good Neighbors.
