HST-57 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON August 23, 1947 yy My dear Mrs. Roosevelt: I read your telegram with regard to the Jews with a lot of interest. This situation is a most embarrassing one all the way around and has been most difficult to approach. I hope it will work out. I understand that these ships were loaded and started to Palestine with American funds and American backing - they were loaded knowing that they were trying to do an illegal act. The action of some of our United States Zionists will eventually prejudice everyone against what they are trying to get done. I fear very much that the Jews are like all under dogs - when they get on top they are just as intolerant and as cruel as the people were to them when they were under- neath. I regret this situation very much because my sympathy has always been their on side. Sincepely yours, Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt Val-Kill Cottages Hyde Park, Dutchess County New York
