Original Exhibition Caption: Eleanor Roosevelt enjoyed a warm friendship with singer, actor, and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte. They appeared together at charity and civil rights events and he and his wife visited ER at her home and traveled with her on occasion. "I am very fond of Harry Belafonte and his wife," ER wrote in her My Day newspaper column, "and am struck by the amount of benefit performances that he manages to sandwich in, though he has a heavy working schedule."
ER's travel schedule prevented her from accepting this invitation to a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. But the following week, she attended an Americans for Democratic Action dinner where King received the organization's Distinguished Service award.
