Letter, Alan Lomax to Eleanor Roosevelt

Original Exhibition Caption: Ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax's field recordings of folk music helped inspire the American folk revival of the 1940s-1960s. Lomax recorded thousands of folk songs and interviews for the Archive of American Folk Song, which he directed at the Library of Congress. Eleanor Roosevelt contributed money to Lomax's projects and wrote about him in her My Day newspaper column. In October 1940, she hosted Lomax and Librarian of Congress Archibald MacLeish at her Val Kill home. In this letter, Lomax thanks ER for her hospitality and outlines a plan they had discussed for expanding the Archive's staff.

Original Exhibition Caption: In 1946, President Harry Truman appointed Eleanor Roosevelt to serve as a member of America's first delegation to the United Nations. She remained at the UN throughout Truman's presidency. In November 1952, Republican Dwight Eisenhower was elected President. In late December, ER submitted her resignation to the President-elect. In this letter, Eisenhower accepts her resignation and praises her service to the nation.
