Original Exhibition Caption: During World War I, inventor Thomas Edison chaired the Navy Consulting Board, which evaluated technical innovations for the U.S. Navy. He also conducted naval technology research at his lab in West Orange, New Jersey. In this letter to FDR, who served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the war, Edison reports on his experiments to reduce dangerous hydrogen buildup inside submarines.
