cruises down through the West Indies. And we got down to
Caraoas and stopped there. And my room-mate and I went up to
the olerk of the notel and sald, "What's doing tonight? We
want to 6° to a care, some place where they have dancing.' I
don't know what they would oall it today, but probably a differ-
ent name.
And the olerk said, "Oh, you can't do that. You have
Got to 6° to the opera.'

to so to the opera."
He suid, "But you must. Everybody is going to the
opera, they are giving Pagliacoi.'
Well, I had been to the opera with my mother aeveral

times. hatinever heard of Pagliacci.

"But," he said, "the great artist is singing."
I said, "I don't care."
"But," ne said, "it's Caruso."
I said, "I never heard of him."
In New York nobody had ever heard of him, and yet at
that time Caruso was considered the grentest tenor in all the
world, he had sung at Caraoas before, in Buenos Aires, in Rio
and in Lima, I think. He was one of the groat singers known to
all South Amerioa.
So becauso there was nowhere olse to go, we went to
the opera. And he was perfectly marvelous.
After we got baok to New York, I talked to some of
my musical friends about Caruso and Pagliacci, but they had
