List, a native Wuerttemberger, never played any part in the poli-
tical intrigues going on in the former Reichswehr and therefore was not very
well known outside of army circles. He seems to be a purely professional
soldier, but as such always had very high qualifications, which is proved
already by the fact that in 1930 he was made commander of the officers Inf-
antry School at Dresden, which was the most important instructional post of
the Reichswehr. If at that time he would have shown the slightest Nazi sym-
pathies, Minister GROENER who always made the most important very thorough
investigations in this respect would most surely not have given him the job.
The predecessor of List as Commander of the Inf. School was General won
FALCKENHAUSEN (Now military commander on Belgium) who was sacked because of
rightist political tendencies and later went to China as military adviser.
It is therefore likely that the personal relations between List and Falcken-
hausen are still not too good. WvP
List was appointed as successor to Falckenhausen as commander in 1930.
SCHLEICHER had got rid of F. by having the Left papers, including the Vorwaerts,
print stories of F.'s rather witty remarks about the Republic. I don't know
how far these stories were true, but Schleicher's purpose was quite clear to
me. He saw in F. one of his two possible rivals. Groener selected List for
this position because he was firmly convinced, as he said to me, that List
held moderate democratic political views and there would be no danger of his
influencing young officers in Dresden in any way contrary to the Constitution.
He had first-class qualifications but not those of a c-in-c. He came from
Wuerttemberg, as aar as I know, and was very young when he was promoted. S.
