Dear Mr. President:
It is a great pleasure for this organization to present
a sample of California sunshine in the form of a basket
of Sunkist seedless Navel oranges. On the trees in
California one day, they reach you in Washington the
next, thanks to 1935 transportation as typified by American
Airlines.
We are in the midst of marketing one of California's
largest and finest orange crops; not only is the crop a
bumper one, but the oranges themselves are uniformly
large in size. We are off to a good start in marketing
this crop and expect it to contribute something to the
returning prosperity of California as well as to the health
and happiness of the American public.

Mr. Marvin H. McIntyre
The White House
Washington, D. C.
Dear Mr. McIntyre:
I am enclosing herewith a photograph taken
in my homecity of Pueblo, Colorado, during the 1920
campaign thinking it might be interesting to you.
Notwithstanding you have grown handsomer with each
passing year, I feel sure you will be able to recognize
yourself, and also the President, Steve Early, Louis
Howe, Camalier, and possibly me, as I happen to have
had the pleasure of being a member of this group.
There is also in the group, sitting to the
left of the President, Mr. Thomas A. Duke, one of the
outstanding men of Colorado and now serving as Colorado
Director of the National Recovery Administration. I
might add that in my judgment, Mr. Duke is the most com-
petent administrator of public matters in the West and
some day, if you are looking for a big man to do a real
job, it would be well to keep him in mind.
Between you and me at the table is Mr. M. G.
Saunders who was then Democratic National Committeeman.
He was for a long time one of our leading Democrats
but today happens to be under conviction and sentence
to the State Pennitentiary for embezzlement from the build-
ing and loan association of which he was an officer.
These facts are merely given to show that
then, as now, you occasionally got into very mixed com-
pany.

Dear Mr. President:
I took the liberty today of sending you, under separate cover, an
engraved card called "The American's Creed". I trust you will pardon
my formality in doing so. I hope some day every school in America will
have one of these in a suitable place.
I have & little suggestion to make. I realize you get plenty of
them all day. I think the Work's Relief Bill, the unemployment insurance
bill and old agespension plans and all other plans along these lines are
fine but I think that what is needed NOW is something to start the
"ball a rolling" in some big way. Two years ago, the plan I have to
suggest would not have been appropriate. P erhaps something like it
has been done before but if done NOW and properly carried out, it looks
like it may be the thing needed. I give it to you for what is worth.
I suggest you call to Washington, the leaders of the ten leading industries
in American, such as the steel, automobile, public utility, railroads,
textile, oil, etc. Explain to them that this is the time to get things
"going". Ask them to VOLUNTARILY, as I believe the American people, on
at the same
the whole, like that instead of cumpulsory, to inmediately re-employ
wages hours Their
say 10% more people than they now employ I would only ask those concerns
to do that, that made a profit in 1934. Of course, those that did not make
employ EES
a profit last year and want to do it anyways, all the better. of course,
rowwork.
if business does not pick up, they will face the extra expense of unnecessary
labor and the extra materials they produced. The big industries should lead
the way--the little ones will follow of their own accord. What a wonderful
thing, it would be, if one of these days, a 100 leading companies in the U.S.
like General Electric, Ford Motor Cardo., etc. would simultaneously come out
with ads in the newspapers explaining th e plan and that they need 10% more
help! It would be a sensation and on top of it, if you would make one of your
famous radio speeches, explaining that these companies VOLUNTARILY are doing
this and that other concerns who can afford it, should also do it! The only
objection I can see to it is the big concerns may feel it will be a loss.
But it is the only way to start the thing going again. Why not try it for a
year?
I am sorry if I took up too much of your time.

Mr. President:
I have the great pleasure of send-

Take It - A Short Story of the C.C.C.".
This little pamphlet is, we believe, a faith-

which animate this splendid movement that has
done and is doing a most remarkable service
for the young men of our country who have
suffered severely in this depression at the
very dawn of their hopes for life's achievement.
I am hopeful that you will have a moment in
your supremely busy life to glance at this work
of Mr. Hoyt.
We trust this is a faithful
and appealing record as we hope to circulate
this document of good cheer from ocean to ocean.

The President
Washington, D. C.
Dear President Roosevelt:
Pablo Archuleta asked me to write you so that you will
understand the gift he has made for you. At his request
I am sending this token of his gratitude.
Last September, I was called to his home in the canyon,
a one-room rock house with dirt floor, where he lives
with his four younger children. He was seriously ill.
We brought him to town, and our Emergency Relief gave him
care and treatment until he recovered.
Pablo Archuleta is a true New Mexican. He was born in
Taos, New Mexico, in 1881 of Spanish-Indian parentage.
His people, as far back as he knows, lived in New Mexico.
His grandfather ran cattle on the shares for Incien B.
Maxwell, owner of the original Maxwell Land Grant. His
father, while herding cattle at Taos, was attacked by
Indians and was wounded by an arrow through his breast.
Later he was a scout for the United States during the
Indian Uprising.
When Mr. Archuleta came to Union County in 1902 he, like
all Mexicans went to farming and running sheep, and, like
all Mexicans here, lost everything he had. He then began
cutting tombstones from the native rocks in the canyon.
He still does this work. His tools are a common hammer,
a pocket-knife, and chisels which he makes from old sheep
shears.
He said if he had the tools to work with and a plainer
picture of you, he could have done better.
Most respectfully yours,
et

Dear Mr. Forster:
I have you in mind quite frequently during these strenu-
ous days and earnestly trust that all is well with you.
I have been keeping very busy myself up here in Newark,
but hope that I may have the pleasure at some time in the future,
of stopping in and seeing you again, as in days of yore.
One of the many new products that has kept me occupied,
is our TOUCH-TIP, - an entirely new form of lighting device, of
which you may have seen one of our ads in the national publications.
Under separate cover, I have sent two and believe that you will be
delighted with its operation, which is absolutely sure and positive,
and, at the same time, no fuel filling is required except once in
months.
Possibly, you may think so well of it as to consider one
of the two worthy of a place on the Presidential desk, in which
case I will very much appreciate your turning one over to the
President with my every good wish for his good health and strength.
He certainly needs both these days!
I will appreciate your acknowledging receipt of the two
TOUCH-TIPS sent so that I may know that they have duly reached you.
With all good wishes, I am
Cordially yours

My dear Miss LeHand:
In response to your memorandum of May 31, 1935,
I see no reason why the President should not accept the
figurines sent to him by Mr. J. José Davalos Alvarez,
San Pedro Tlaquepaque, Jalisco. The writer makes no
reference to a possible reward and has apparently sent
the gift in a spirit of good will. I have therefore
made proper acknowledgment to him and am returning here-
with the letter and gift.
Sincerely yours,
For the Secretary of State:

Very Excellent and Honored Sir:
I greet you most sincerely and cordially. This is to
advise you that there should be in the post office a small
wooden box sent by me. The said box contains a gift of
little clay figures made artistically by hand, without
the use of any mould other than the hand of the maker.
The said figures are enchanting little ones such as
Uncle Sam, glory and honor for that country. In his right
hand he is carrying a little flag on a staff, in such a way
that more than half the staff is above his hand. The second
one is a legislator and scientist; the third is a letter
carrier. The fourth is a typical Mexican "rough-neck".
The fifth is a girl of the people - a thoroughly Mexican
type. And all five are very nice. There are two little
turkeys [pabitos], separate, wrapped in a small package.
They are all in the little box. Much care should be taken,
for if the little figures are broken they must be paid
for.
I offer you my humble present, Mr. President,
because it really came from my heart. I like it very much.

Once more, as a humble artisan, at Calle la Palma
38, San Pedro Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, Mexico, I remain
in hope of receiving your commands. Pardon me if my
language is sometimes incorrect. No more for the present.
J. José Dávalos Alvarez.

As I have to send a parcel containing five clay
figures of the value of $5.00 (five pesos), which I am
sending by express to Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt at the
White House, U.S.A., and as I am not responsible for the
tax on the value (as this is only a single shipment), I
request you to be good enough to accept of me the payment
of the 4% duty on shipments abroad which the said shipment
will cause if it is made; I make the declaration that the
package referred to is being shipped by express and to the
consignee stated, for which [reason] I make below the de-
claration spoken of in Article 65 of the Regulations under
the Law on Foreign Shipments.
