I do not know how or where my Grandfather got them, but he was very proud of them, I also have a Book entitled "Daring and Suffering", by Wm. C. My dear President Roosevelt. I thank you for your letter of 4th inst. I am glad that you have accepted my silk picture as a gift of mine for the white House But my purpose in sending it was under the condition that you should have its photograph and history be pub- lished in all the papers My intention in doing so, , was to wipe out the defamation of my character As my reputation has been spoiled , since Mr. Morgan has convicted me Otherwise it does not serve for its purpose For if you would obliged me to do so, , I will be pleased to send you another gift to you, which would be much more valuable and worthy to you than this picture In the mean time, I wish to inform you that I wrote to Senator Borah since Mr. Putnam has refused to recommend my Ethiopic Codex to the Congress Asking him to inves- tigate this matter I also wrote to Judge Gaffey, asking him to send my letter to the Suprem Court, in order to let them investigate the cause of this corruption, as the monopoly of the Art dealers have boycotted my business , which is going on since SO many years And that is the cause and consequence of bringing such chaotic condition . As Mr. Putnam does not understand why there is such prejudice against me which does not only prevents my progress, but even it paralyzes the progress of art and all kinds of culture in our country AS does the Met. useum same thing for my Michelangelo statue, which should be considered the glory of our country In order to prove you how much corruption is going on in our educational Institutions, you would be surpri- we zed to know that, since I wrote you about Miss Bertha Wiles who is considered an authority on the works of Michelangelo's work, the Fogg's Art Museum have remouved her from that institution . This means not only corrupting the laws of our Constitution, but even of the commerce, both of which are considered the gates of our civilization Therefore if my Constitutional rights shall not be ajusted, I am going reveal the whole secret of their cor- ruption. For my fight is not only for my selfish satisfaction but for the welfare of our country For which cause you are fi- ghting too So this will help your cause , as evidence what is going in our country. I hope this time you will take into history of my picture be published in all the papers in consideration my proposition, and have the photograph For and the doing to such so, cruelty, but at the same time it will help uplift the not it will help me to wipe out my unjust condamnation, to moral of our country. Layour. 745 Fifth Ave Room 300 New York February 14th President Franklin D. Roosevelt White House Washington D.C. THE WHITE HOUSE Shank My dear President Roosevelt FEB 17 1938 RECEIVED While I been waiting patiently the answer of my letters, I am sending an Italian silk picture as a gift of mine to the white House As a messenger which will tell her strange story. It represents the Queen of Elisabeth of Hungary giving alms to the poor. It was this picture which inspired me to write the second verse of my poetry, which I inclosed in my Send picture to W.H. museum letter of 29th Ult This will prove my statement that art is neither the joke nor the joy of the world, but the centre and the circle of our civilization , as well as the blood and bone of our cul- ture The reason I am sending it to the White House, in order to teach America a good lesson, as how in the olden times they use to defeat the depression So I feel if you would have published this picture in all the papers and let the public see and study its history, I think it will revival the moral of our millio- nairs AS you will notice the picture is execu- ted so beautifully with gold, silver and silk threads, that it may inspire many millionairs, as much as it did me For neither the mat- ter nor the money could heal the wounds of the wretched poor , unless the pity and mercy of our millionairs would meangle such sentiments, as the Queen Elisabeth showing the example in this picture . Therefore I feel the history of this picture may enlighten the minds of our mil- lionairs As I wrote before Even the whole mountains of this world will turn into gold, yet neither the depression nor such decadence of our present time will diminish, unless America change her attitude and set an example to the whole world. For this purpose I purchassed this picture in 1929 from one of the oldest mansions on the Grand Canal in Venice Though the Lady who owned it was not willing to part with it, but I liked it so much that, I forced her to sell it to me. The history relates that Queen Elisabeth the daughter of Andrea II of Hungary. She was born in I207 16th A.D. was but this picture was executed in Italy either later part So of 1 as an or the like the artist do not speak with words, sym- early part of 17th century, by an unknown artist but with antiquarian Therefore allow me to inform you that if my will propositions delay to will this earth. Thanking you for your attention and I trust to hear your kind answer. In the mean time I hope you will like and ac- cept my gift to the White House I am Yours obident citizen gregor aharon Gregor Aharon P.S. I also wrote directly to Mr. Putnam on the first of this month. and am waiting his final decision. The reason I am pressing this matter, is because I have to go to Italy to prepare the exhibition of my sculptures of the Leo, da, Vinci and Michelangelo . Both thse masters works has inspired me , while I loved and lived with them, so much so, that their influence has reflected on my mind AS the N Greek philosopher has said. (1 What I see that is what I become ." Which is a true fact, as I experience it myself. And that is why such great masterpieces are priceless to those who undersrand same and appriciate them. ади Layour. rillsburgh Cincinnati Toledo. 745 Fifth Ave Room 300 New York March 4th I938 esident Franklin D. Roosevelt white House Washington D.C. My dear President Roosevelt II Let us not be a mere man of vision but man of action As that is what America expects The reason I am writing this text, is because you officially stated recently that the door of the White House is open to any citizen who cares to inform their veiws According to your instruction, I wrote four letters. Besides these on Feb. 14th, I sent by parcel post an Italian silk picture representing the Queen Elisabeth giving alms to the poor as a gift of mine to the White House. The reason I sent this picture asking you to be good enough to have the photo- graph and its history published in all the papers Thinking that it may inspire and instruct America, as how in the olden times they use to overcome such depressions Having not received any reply to my let- ters, nor any acknoledgement of my parcel, from the White House, I am wondering whether White House has received it or not ? Mr. Putnam answered my recent letter ne- gatively The copy of his letter I am inclosing herewith. So I un- derstand he is not anxious to secure such a valuable volum as my Et- hiopic Codex The reason of which I think the big dealers not only do prevent Mr. Putnam to purchase my Bible, but even my Michelangelo statue because of their jealousy That is why they have boycotted my business Such an act should be considered barbarism In order to prove my statement I am in- losing the copy of the letter of the Boston Museum As such are the answers I have received from our Museums and Libraries since years. So that you will understand there is prejudice against me That is why. I wrote you, that I am forced to denounce my citizenship As my Constitutional rights have been robbed from me While I never made harm to any one of them, but I tried to serve in studying, tra- veling any and collecting since 35 years such valuable art treasures, which should be considered the glories of our country And yet instead in- to the prision. I can assure you that the only thought behind my letter was that of offering him something which is, in my opinion, valuable for its rarity, and not readily procurable. This type of pleasurable comfort is not innate to North Americans. He has shown marked cordiality to South America, and it occurred to me that he might appreciate some- thing typically South American. No doubt there will be some who will inquire about the procurement of the hammocks, and, while they can only be procured from us in America, it would have never occurred to me to mar my offer with the taint of commercialism. I hope that the President will use it, and that you tell me, when your duties allow, if he enjoys it. Thanking you for your courteous kindness. I am Yours very truly, ALFARO BROTHERS, INC. ACME COMMODITY & PHRASE March 14, 1938. Mr. James Roosevelt, Executive Mansion, Washington, D. C. Dear Mr. Roosevelt: I have for some time thought of offering your father a South American product which I think he would enjoy extremely well both at Hyde Park as well as in Georgia. I have been refrained from doing so, however, by fear of commit- ting a breach of etiquette, but now it occurs to me that you might be I willing to present this offering to your father, and that he would not think me presumptuous for doing SO, The article which I have in mind is a South American "cumare" Ham- mock made of fibre which grows in the wilderness of Colombia and the upper Amazon River. This hammock is delicately hand-twisted, and the strands of rope of very fine texture are woven by the skillful hands of natives. The hammock weighs between two and three pounds and oc- cupies a very small space, and still it is guaranteed to withstand weight between one thousand and two thousand pounds. "Cumare" fibre is known for its almost indestructible texture. beinfol Marine ropes made of this material, used in the Amazon River boats, have been in use there for over twenty-five years without deteriorat- ing or losing their primitive value. I imported these hammocks, which are comparatively few, and I am offering them privately to those people who, in my opinion, are capable of appreciating something that is extraordinary by its rarity and in- trinsic value. I would be very pleased to send you, if you permit me, one or two of these hammocks to give your father an opportunity to try them on his next trip to Georgia; and even you, yourself, when going hunting or to your country retreat, might like to try one of them to experience that South American indolent leisure. Roosevelt, President of the United States, The White House, Washington, D.C. Dear Sir: I am mailing you a Campaign Poster mounted on cardboard which is a good example of lithography as done from the stone process. The poster starts with -- THE ISSUE -- 1900, Liberty -- Justice -- Humanity. These are still the "issues", how- ever, we are meeting them with less tolerance. The broken bell with the date "1776" and inscription -- "Liberty", has lost a great deal of its significance due to special privelege with its accessory, political spoils. It appears that a thought expressed by Thomas Paine some years ago could be considered with effect: "An avidity to punish is always dangerous to liberty. It leads men to stretch, to misinterpret, and to misapply even the best of laws. He that would make his own lib- erty secure, must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty, he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself." A knowledge of economics and human relationship is more necessary than silver-tongued spell-binding oratory and political manuevering for the benefit of a few. I hope you will accept this poster for whatever value its illustrations may possess. Respectfully yours, M. L. Abrams. If I use a streamer, or a piece of the fur skin, thats the first application. The first piece of fur is placed over Thank mad Little Rock, Arkansas, June 21, 1938. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Washington, D. C. Dear Sir: This being my first attempt to ever write to the President of the United States I am thrilled. My name is Tranny P. Arnold. I am a disabled World War veteran, born in Arkansas. My trade for twenty- five years was cleaning windows, buildings and dewelling homes. Most of this time was spent in Little Rock, Arkansas. For five years I have been unable to do this work because of illness of long standing, created in the Army. I am married and the father of six children; four girls and two boys. All are doing fine in school. My wife is living and is very smart. One of the best mothers in the world. Dear President, I don't know how to address you. I have never had a teacher to tell me how to write you. Since I have been unable to work, when I am able I go fishing. I have liked fishing from boyhood. I have experimented in fishing for a number of years. I think I am almost as good as Mr. Jack Lamb, our champion Bass fisherman. I am going to write a book on fishing, including how to fish with live baits. Your Honor, please accept this Fly Fishing Bait in the honor of Arkansas. The fur for this bait was donated by Benszky, Furrier & Designer, 811 Main Street, Little Rock, Arkansas. I created this bait through experimenting. I have used it for four years. The fur will not cling to the hook whilein the water. It flares out and when pulled in the water it trembles and quivers life-like, so much so, it will catch more fish than any other wet Fly Bait. When through fishing pull the bait through two closed fingers to run the water out and lay it in the sun to dry. When dry give it a riffle with the finger and it will be just as fluffy as before using. You can catch over fifty bass with one of the baits and it will not be worn out. The hook is wrapped with small wire in two directions to prevent the fur skin from slipping when it is applied. The fur is applied to the hook in two parts. If I use a streamer, or a piece of the fur skin, thats the first application. The first piece of fur is placed over PRES.FDR#2 the streamer or skin used in the place of porkrind, as is used in the large bait I have made for you, and the last piece of fur is cut and sewed on the end of the hook. This, near the eye completes the bait. When this fur bait is used the skin harden and is hard to even cut from the hook with a knife. This bait may be called the "Fur Wizard Fishing Fly". The dry fly popping bug is called "Flying Beauty". My oldest son will be out of High School next year. I am training him to make the bait to create for him a job when he is out of college. He is a Tranny, Jr., fifteen years old and very smart in his studies. Dear President, please allow me to compliment you as a fisherman. I think you are fine. I admire you in every respect. I enjoy your Fire-side addresses. Will you please Sir, if you have a discarded Fly Rod, allow your butler to send me one? I would be happy to keep it as a much treasured souvenir with my collection of gifts. Please pardon me for my long message. I am, Very sincerely yours, Tranny P. anold. Tranny P.
