President of United States
Dear mr. Presidenk
Store.,T.
In ancient times it was customary for those
who sought a ruler's favor to present themselves
before him with such things of theirs as they
deemed worthy of his greatness. Thus we reach of
rulers and princes having been presented with
richly wrought armour splendid horses -precious
gems - such costly gifts being alone considered
fit to honor a prince.
Desiring in a like manner to approach the
foremost american of the age witha token of
admiration I am enclosing a pencil sketch of
that grand american Lady-your mother.
Drawn from a small picture which appeared
in the newspaper at the time of her death
d am aware of its eleficiencies as a partrait and
regret to have nothing better to give. yet d believe
your courtery will dispose you to accept it
in the spirit in which it is given.
Sincerely
Michael Parthell

My dear Mr. Alpert:
Thank you very much for your kind
letter of October fifteenth.
I am sorry that we cannot arrange
for Rabbi Bernstein to present the illuminated
hand -executed testimonial direct to the Presi-
dent as you request. The President is so
pressed for time during these extremely critical
days that, for some time past, I have been act-
ing on his behalf and receiving all gifts, testi-
monials, et cetera. If Rabbi Bernstein cares
to come to Washington and leave the testimonial
here in my office, I shall be glad to see him.
I will, however, await your further advice.
Sincerely yours,
EDWIN M. WATSON

My dear Mrs. Bailey:
The President has received your letter
of October sixth, and was deeply touched by the
kind spirit of friendliness which prompted you
to make and send him that pair of socks.
It is interesting to note that you have
reached your seventy-eighth birthday and the Presi-
dent asks me to express the hope that good health
and happiness will go with you through the years
to come.
Very sincerely yours,
