that letter about your wood carvings and to en-
close the postcard pictures of them. It must
have required a great deal of painstaking care
to make them and your generous thought in want-
9.W
ing to present them to the President is more
than appreciated. However, it is felt that we
should not accept them as they really are not
just the type that would fit in with his rare
collections in the Hyde Park Library. It is
suggested that you make your work available to
some school or museum near you, as an example
of fine service to your own community. The
postcards are returned herewith, and I also
have pleasure in extending the President's
very best wishes to you.

Dear Miss Tully:
I am returning enclosed a letter from
Jona Borden addressed to you dated January 18,
and ten postcards illustrating the wood carvings
he wishes to give to the President. These car-
vings are apparently amateurish and would have
no place in this Library unless they were pre-
sented to us by the President. I suggest that
Mr. Borden make his work available to schools
or some museum near him as a service to his own
community.

Dear President Roosevelt:
It gives me great pleasure to present to you
this gift, which has a deep meaning and 1 have worked many weeks get -
ing this gift ready to present you on your birthday anniversary, and
selected this design because it represents the star which shone over
the birth place of our Saviour.
1 hope that you and Mrs. Roosevelt will aec-
ept this gift in the spirit in which it is sent.
1 will soon be eighty-one years of age,add
was afraid if 1 did not make this gift now,1 might not be able to do
so later.1 am a widow, and live from an old age assistance check.
Yours Truly,
P.S. The quilt comes by parcel post.
This star is the star of Bethleham which led the wise men from the
east and stood over where the Chrbst Child lay in the manger, and
when they had opended their gift chest, they presented unto Him
gifts, and departed into their country another way-the gifts were
gold and frankibcebse and myrrh, and so,I present to you, resident
Roosevelt, on your birthday, this Star of Bethleham ,wishing you many
more Happy Birthdays.

Dear Mr. President
I am privileged to be a member of a family consisting of
mother, Winifred A., who is an inspiration to her family
of six sons, three daughters, to everyone who knows her
and myself
-
All the members of our family whose mental faculties are
sufficiently mature to express judgment are convinced that
the war in which we are engaged demands the attitude of a
man who will kill an intruder in his home -
There is
just a bit of a chance in that, but we gladly take it
-
We are inspired by the leadership of your good self and are
over-joyed to observe that we are one united nation now be-
hind the present purposes of our President
There is much in this present situation to ponder on, but the
principal things are that we in this family are as one in the
conclusion of the poem quoted below.
-
We are sending in this cover a picture of one of our number,
only because it happens to be the picture most recently made
and applicable to the present activity of our people.
Margaret Ann was snapped in the act of purchasing defense
stamps for her father, mother and all of her brothers and
sisters, as well as herself, to be awarded to them by Santa
Claus at Christmas just past.
This picture was intended to be a picture of Mr. Morgenthau
and Margaret Ann as he was a hotel guest on that day and failed
to return, we believe, only because the meeting which he ad-
dressed at the Union League Club consumed so much of his time
that he was obliged to send to the hotel for his baggage rather
than to come personally for his baggage.
-
Margaret secured

-
leave from her high school classes to come to the hotel to
carry out her purpose and waited until it was found that Mr.
Morgenthau would not be there.
-
The spur to write this letter came from Joyce Kilmer's poem,
"The Peacemaker"
-
I quote
"Upon his will he binds a radiant chain,
For Freedom's sake he is no longer free.
It is his task, the slave of Liberty,
With his own blood to wipe away a stain.
That pain may cease, he yields his flesh to pain.
To banish war, he must a warrior be.
He dwells in Night, eternal Dawn to see,
And gladly dies, abundant life to gain.
What matters Death, if Freedom be not dead?
No flags are fair, if Freedom's flage be furled,
Who fights for Freedom, goes with joyful tread
To meet the fires of Hell against him hurled,
And has for captain Him whose thorn-wreathed head
Smiles from the Cross upon a conquered world."
The children are:
John F. Bowman, Jr., age 26 years, an Insurance
Solicitor who was married last September;
Ida Mary Bowman, age 24 years, who is in charge of
the Art Department in the Amundsen High School in
Chicago;
David J. Bowman, S.J., age 22 years, who is studying
for the priesthood in his fifth year at West Baden
College, West Baden, Indiana, with nine years of
study ahead of him;
James A. Bowman, U.S.N.R., age 20 years, who is a
junior at Loyola University, Chicago, Illinois;
Winifred A. Bowman, age 18 years, who is a freshman
at Rosary College, River Forest, Illinois;
Margaret A. Bowman, age 16 years, who is a Junior at
Trinity High School, River Forest, Illinois;
William George Bowman, age 14 years, a freshman at
Loyola Academy, Chicago, Illinois;
Robert Peter Bowman, age 12 years, who is in seventh
grade at Ascension School, Oak Park, Illinois; and
Raymond Gregory Bowman, age 10 years, in fifth grade
at Ascension School, Oak Park, Illinois.
-
STEVENS HOTEL-CHICAGO
#3 - Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt.
This is the story of an ordinary American family doing the
ordinary things at all times and being consistant, we believe,
in assuming the obligation of our several stations in times
like these
-
Again we refer to the spur that caused this letter to be
written and we join you in your high and holy purpose to rid
the world of those who try to force their diabolical designs
on their own people as well as the peoples of other nations
on the earth.
Yours very truly,

produced by Mrs. Bertram effectively portrays a patriotic
motif in filet crochet most excellently executed. Mrs.
Bertram, who traces her paternal ancestors to William
Pitt, sends this token to you on your birthday as an
"emblem of loyalty and faith in our Native Land and to
our President".
May I also take this opportunity to add my own
