Dear President Roosevelt:
With the greatest of pleasure I am
presenting you a pair of my Blue Ribbon Stock

They are being shipped today by express.
I have taken this upon myself as it
has been called to my attention through a publica-

amount of annoyance created by rodents in the

mousers and most adorable and affectionate.
If there is any information that you

kits I would be more than glad to hear from you
and give you that information.
The pedigrees of the kits are being
registered with the Cat Fanciers Association and
immediately upon their recording and the return of
same to me I will forward the pedigrees to you.
Wishing you the Best of Health and further
Success on to Victory, I beg to remain

Permit me to thank you in the
President's behalf for your kindness in
sending him the gift to which you refer
in your letter of recent date. He appre-
ciates your friendly thought in wanting
him to have this product of your own work-
manship.
I am sorry indeed to have to dis-
appoint you regarding a personal reply from
the President, but feel sure that you will
understand when I tell you that during these
critical days It is increasingly necessary
to permit him to devote his every attention
to his official duties.
Very sincerely yours,

The President wrote that he is grateful for those two books
by Rudyard Kipling; and that he appreciated having Sir Webb-Johnson tell the history
of these two books. Says that he had read' The Burden of Jerusalem" before and could
under stand why Mrs. Kipling thought it would be best not to publish it, had not read
"A Chapter of Proverbs" before and enjoyed it very much. The President further states
that by a twist of fate he had never had a chance of meeting Rudyard Kipling, says he
was to have lunched with him on a day in July, 1918, but at the last minute he (the Pres.)
had to make a visit to the Destroyer Base in Queenstown with Sir Eric Geddes. Says his
cousin, Theodore Roosevelt, had sent messages to him by the President. The President
expresses his thanks for volumes. --- The President wrote to Prime Minister Winston
Churchill, Oct. 25, 1943 saying "Those two little books are gems - and I can well under-
stand why they should not be made public at this time. Perhaps 'The Burden of Jerusalem'
should wait until you and I are strong enough to carry Ibn Saud to Jerusalem and Dr.

Sept. 17, 1943.
Wrote Mr. Early stating that he would like to present to the
President for his Hyde Park Library, binoculars, which were loaned to the Government
during World War I, together with an engraved form of acknowledgement entitled "The
Eyes of the Navy," signed by Mr. Roosevelt as Assistant Secretary of the Navy and a
U. S. Treasury Check for $1.00, as remuneration for the rental of said binoculars.
Asks also to have an acknowledgment signed by the President for his scrap book.-
The President replied Sept.27, 1943, stating that he would like to have those items
he mentioned, as the President said he hasn't a copy of that acknowledgment and recalls
having spent many hours in signing fifty or sixty thousand certificates in 1917-18.
States that these relics have a personal touch and will be added to his highly prized
possessions. Expresses his thanks for being thought of.

ing framed certificate of "EYES OF THE NAVY", also his Binoculars;
Mr. Brookman enclosed in this letter the President's letter to
him of March 22, 1918, also U. S. Treasury Check No. 154,688 of
April 20, 1918 (check made out to E. G. Bruckman), sent as com-
pensation for the rental of said binoculars. Mr. Brookman states
that the four items tie in together, and he expresses the hope
that after the war they may be placed in the President's Hyde Park
Museum.-On 10/29/43 Miss Tully wrote to Mr. Brookman, express-
ing the President's appreciation for the above-mentioned items;
says he is delighted to have the framed certificate: "Eyes
For the Navy" bearing his signature as Assistant Secretary of the
Navy. She adds that the original of the letter which the Presi-
dent sent Mr. Brookman (Bruckman) on 3/22/18, the Treasury check
and the binoculars are of vital interest to the President,--
Typed notation indicates that the original correspondence in this
case, binoculars, framed certificate, check and letter which the
President sent to Mr. Brookman, 3/22/18, were sent to Hyde Park
Library, Series "A". (Copies retained in file).

Y
Dear Mr. President,
The accompanying portfolio
may seem rather gruesome and
scarcely fit for a. gift to our beloved
President. Knowing however, how
proud and happy the artist would
have been, could he have known
that his "documentary evidence"
had been accepted by President
Roosevelt, I offer it to you in his
name - and in the name of all
those who dared to rebel against
Nazism from the very beginning
and who have since paid for their
convictions with their lives.
The evidence shows plainly
what the Nazi "supermen" - as far
back as 1933 - did to their own
people - and sounds the warning
what the rest of the world can expect
from them.
In 1936 - when the original
drawings were made - very few
people in the U. S. A. would have
believed the story this portfolio tells,
to be true! I know, for a fact, that
at that time, in Europe alas,
many did not believe it.
"Karlchen", the artist, is seen in
many of the drawings. A little
hunchback, scarcely 5 feet tall,
In one of the drawings, where he is
dragged into witness the whipping
and general manhandling of one
of his fellow victims, he is sneeringly
told to have a good look, SO he can
paint a "beautiful honor fairy-tale"
if and when he gets free.
- 2 -
He made up his mind right
there and then to obey the command
literally. When he finally escaped
to Belgium he spent the first months
drawing what he had experienced
and witnessed.
The mayor of Antwerp was the
first person to buy one of these
portfolios. He also furnished
Karlchen with a "carte d'identite"
so that he could stay in Belgium.
In 1937 I had the privilege
of being introduced to Karlchen
and many other political refuges,
(mostly professional people) who
belonged to a group which was
very active in an underground
Anti-nazi-movement.
They all knew their game to be a
dangerous one - and - Known
to Herr Goebbels and his consorts.
Shortly after the invasion of Belgium
they paid for it with their lives.
The only one, Known to have escaped
is an American photographer,
(also the photographer of the original
drawings of the portfolio). He Sent -
after incredible misery, hardships
and adventures, finally managed
to arrive with his little son, in
New York (via Martinique).
He is the one who told me the
final chapter of Karlchen and
his merry band! For, merry they
were, inspite of all they had been
through and of what they Knew
awaited them.
- 3 -
There is one more portfolio in-
the United States. Karlchen dedicated
it to me - and - because of what
it stands for, it is laid away
reverently, with other souvenirs,
Your name, to my suppressed
people, and all suppressed
peoples in this nether vale of
tears, holds the promise of
deliverance. Heaven grant that
the day of Freedom may come
soon!
God bless you and sustain
you in your stupendous task,
(Sgd) Adriana de Bruyn
