Dear Miss Tully:
I am taking the privilege of sending you and The President a complimentary
copy of THE BEARDS' BASIC HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES.
This original publication, by America's foremost historians--Charles A. and
Mary R. Beard--will be published on August 1st (under our New Home Library
imprint) for only 69¢. The book will contain 520 pages and is illustrated
with about 25 maps done by Fritz Kredel. A specially illustrated and enlarged
edition of the book will be issued by the Book-of-the-Month Club as their
September-October dividend. A deluxe edition will be published early in
1945 by Doubleday, Doran & Company--probably at $3.50. Charles and Mary
Beard, in their decision to make this book available at a popular price,
emphasize that "it brings to a close our many years of cooperative efforts
in seeking to interpret the long course of American history--it is newly
designed and newly written to express the historical judgment which we have

I know I can anticipate your interest in low-cost books on behalf of wider
education; and, of course, the importance of a broader knowledge of United
States history in these times is undeniable. I do hope you and the President
will have an opportunity to look through this book, and that you will permit
me to send you other books from time to time that we think important.
Thanks so much for your interest.

CONDICT, Alden S.
New York,N.Y.,
August 28, 1944.
Writes the President saying that he and Charles McCoy are sending the President the
"Blueprints for Freedom" and two books, the complete set, Volume 1 and Volume 11,
"Edward Delano, from his affectionate brother Franklin, 1834". Also enclosed is a
picture of the President. Wishes the President to write a few lines in the corner of
the picture and return to him. Asks that the President sign it Franklin Delano instead
of just Franklin D.--Mr. Condict, Sept. 30th, wrote to Miss Tully asking if the Pres-
ident had received the package above referred to.--Miss Tully, Oct. 16th, wrote to Mr.
Condict saying she was very sorry for the delay but that she had been waiting until the
AL
President had an opportunity to sign the poiture so she could send it along at the same
time. Miss Tully said the President has inscribed the picture but did not write out the
Delano as he never signs his name that way. Miss Tully said the President was extremely
grateful to him for Volumes 1 and 11 of "Tales of a Grandfather", which she thinks be-
longed to his great-uncle. States the President was also pleased to have "Blueprints for
Freedom" sent to him by Mr. Condict and Mr. MoCoy and wishes much that he had the time to
discuss this with Mr. McCoy. but unfortunately he is so very busy at this time that they
are unable to arrange an appointment.
