Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt,
President-Elect of the United States,
Hyde Park, N. Y.
My Dear Mr. Roosevelt;-
Will you kindly accept my congratulations upon your successful
campaign and recent election.
It was my good fortune to attend the Democratic National Convention
last June. My greatest thrill was when Chairman Walsh nominated
you for President.
The gavel which he used was made by me from the famous Lincoln-
Douglas Linden Tree under which Lincoln and Douglas met in one
of their Historical Debates. The Associated Press said you saw
the gavel and asked Edwin A. Halsey Sergeant-At-Arms at the Con-
vention to preserve it and send it to you later. I hope you re-
céived it because of my admiration for Abraham Lincoln, for you
and the Democratic Party.
Would you please be kind enough to let me know if you received
the gavel? With best wishes for the future success of Democracy
I remain,
Very sincerely yours,
Gladstone Califf.

he did receive the gavel and is delighted

your willingness to part with this
treasure.

My dear Mr. President:
Last week I addressed a large audience at
the Women's Club of the Park Street Church and it
thrilled me to note the wonderful unanimit with which
these good New England people responded to my aes-
scription of Inauguration Day.
Looking back over the files of the National
Magazine I find my story on Franklin D. Hoosevelt,
Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and how little I
realized at that time that during a great World war
you were preparing for this great worldwide economic
battle.
While I know that you have a flood of letters
pouring in on you and that every second of your
precious time is taken up, I could not resist writing
this letter, because I am going to try and give you,
through the National Magazine and the Reader's Rapid
Review, the best that is in me. I have not forgotten
your kindness in sending me that greeting to our readers
when you were Governor of New York, in which you stated
that when we lose interest in childhood and sympathy
in human relations We are indeed lost. A wave of
real fellow-citizenship is sweeping over the country
under your leadership.
Am sending you a copy of my book "Holiday
Moods of the Year" containing my radio addresses. I
do not expect you to read it, but I am very gratified
at the responses that I have received, for I do think
these days will reveal a holiday mood in days of dis-
tress and trial that is a triumphant tribute to your

Dear Sir:-
This writer submits, with his compliments, a phonograph record
made at home on the evening of March 12th, 1933, on which is
recorded your nation-wide Radio Address to the public.
It occurred to me that you might like to know exactly how your
voice carried into the homes throughout the Nation.
The making of this record was decided upon as you were starting
your address, and unfortunately, I missed a small part in the
beginning and also missed a paragraph about the middle, because
of the necessity of turning the record over.
I am enclosing herewith the needle used in the recording of this
record, as it is necessary that this same needle, or another of
similar character, be used in reproducing it on a modern RCA Vic-
tor with two speeds (fast and slow).
Please note that the entire side, #1, was made at slow speed and
must be reproduced at slow speed.
On the reverse side, #2, the small outer portion, near the rim,
was made at high speed but the balance of the #2 side was made
at slow speed, and must be recorded in the same speeds.
It may be possible that you already have a record of this kind
of your Radio Address, but in any event this will indicate to
you the high feeling of regard and the personal interest which
is being taken in you by the average citizen throughout the Nation.
Your extremely capable leadership has aroused confidence and
enthusiasm in the people to a most gratifying degree. It is
exceedingly good to know that our Government is now in the
hands of the most competent leader since Lincoln.
It is also good to know that this leadership is not subject to
domination of selfish and sinister influences.
Please accept this token as an evidence of admiration and esteem,
and may you and yours enjoy the fullest measure of health, happi-
ness and success.
Very respectfully yours,

Dear Mr. Howe:-
As secretary to my father, W. F. Corcoran, who is at the present time
in Washington anticipating on bidding on some government work, I am writing to
you.
,
I called his attention and showed him, President Roosevelt's picture,
sitting by a dial telephone, in the New York Times, a few days ago. I said, why
don't you send the President one of those non-skid phone grips, that your friend
in Chicago wants to introduce. His reply was, "You send it," so enclosed find a
non-skid phone grip that will keep the Presidents telephone from skidding around,
while dialing.

Dear Mr. Roper:
The students of the Clemson Textile Department
have woven a cotton picture of President Roosevelt. Mr.
Willis, Director of the Textile Department, and I should
like the President to have the first picture off the loom.
I am therefore sending this photograph to you under
separate cover with the request that you kindly present
it to the President on or before March 18th. May I ask
that no news item be released on this before March 19th?
On the back of the picture is printed some
information which may be of interest to the President.
This information is being incorporated in a news item
which will be mailed to many of the country's leading
newspapers together with photographs of this woven fabric.
In order that the President may be able to make
a closer inspection of the fabric picture, I am including
one not framed. Mr. Willis is going to send you one of
these pictures as soon as others are completed.
With highest personal regards and best wishes,

Dear Mr. President:
(PRF, 9-0
We are sending you under separate cover, as has been
our custom for many years dating back to that great President
Grover Cleveland, a pair of shirts which we ask you to kindly
use as we have requested all of the great men who have preceded
you in the office of President of this great country.
It is rare indeed for a President to be both mariner and
fisherman. Many of our previous great presidents have been
fishermen and for that reason we have sent shirts suitable to
those followers of Isaac Walton to be used in the pursuit of
the finny tribe.
Now if we can believe all we see in the papers,
Mr. President, you are much less of a fisherman than you are a
mariner and for that reason we are sending some all wool blue
flannel shirts which is the approved regalia for the great

pursuits in his leisure moments but follows them with only in-
different success.
We judge by your pictures that the neck size should be
seventeen inches. If this is incorrect kindly return the shirts
and let us know what the dimension should be for we would be
happy to send you shirts of the correct size.
It is our sincere wish and our positive belief that you,
Mr. President, will be successful in guiding our Ship of State
into safe harbor as you have many times in the past stood
staunchly at the helm of many a good vessel, arriving always
safely into calm and untroubled waters.
Again assuring you of the pleasure we shall receive if
you will accept this slight gift, and assuring you further of
our entire confidence in you and in your administration, we
are

Dear Mr. President:
In the hope that it may afford you
even a few minutes of relaxation from your cares in
Hruze,
this time of stress I am sending you by parcels post
a photograph of an old map, which I thought might be
of interest to you as it shows what this part of the
country was thought to be like soon after the arrival
of your forebears and shows where they chose to settle.
The original, which is hand illumi-
nated in colors, has been for many years in the posses-
sion of a monastery in Belgium, whence the Walloons
came to this country, and I believe it has never been
published.
I regret very much to have to advise
you, Mr. President, that there is one condition, or
string, attached to this little offering. Even though
the coast line and streams are fairly accurately charted
for what one geographer or mariner could have known in
those days, we, all of us, value your well being SO
highly that you are never to navigate by it.
Wishing you continued good health and
strength and success in your efforts in behalf of your
fellow citizens, I am

My dear Mr. Roosevelt:
Mayor Carey was seriously injured in an automobile accident on the second
of February, one block from his home, by an automobile truck owned by a Poughkeepsie
concern. He is still confined to the Benedictine Hospital in this city and is
recovering.
He directs me to tell you that he is happy over your escape from the
assassin's bullets at the unfortunate occurence in Miami.
One of the last things he did before he was injured was to autograph and
frame a picture taken while you were speaking at the George Washington Bi-Centennial
exercises in Kingston on Memorial Day of last year. Following his instructions, I
am sending the picture to you under separate cover. Mayor Carey directs me to say
that he hopes you will take the picture to Washington and during some of your
troublesome moments when you are looking for a happy moment he knows that if you
will gaze at the picture and see therein two good, staunch followers of your in
Kingston, namely himself and Judge Clearwater, that he knows you will get a happy

OUR NEW PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
Inspired by Inaugural Address, March 4, 1933.
Out of the debris and ruin a man
Lifts up his head and calls "All shall be well".
His voice is that of leadership
Men tell -
And Assure us his economic plan
Will bring relief and save us from the ban -
of all mal-practice. We tremble, hope, trust,
Take new courage. His words are tempered, just
Acceptable to those worthy to scan.
The nultitudes rejoice. We all rejoice
For in the sentiments which he doth voice
We catch the gleam of rejuvenation
We see seed the salvage of our nation
Our hope is stayed by his most humble word
A prayer of faith - dependence on The Lord.
Truly this man was in God's Providence
may
Chosen equipped exalted to the throne
The people receive him, their very own
A democrat possessed of common-sense
He asks support depends upon the prayer
Of all who with him will the burdens share
Let each attach himself, be his defense.
A man of The Times, for The Times is here
The Ship of State in Love he fain would steer
His place and task the greatest in the world

Your Board of Trustees realize that to undertake a
progressive and enlarged program is a very vital matter. In
the Budget, we have succeeded in requesting less by cutting
down wherever possible; it does not ask for more than last
year. We are also endeavoring to raise money for our stand-
ing debt. How much better under the leadership of our new
minister for us to SO try, rather than surrender to the spirit of
disappointment or conditions. Let us at least attempt to go
forward and in God's Way. We anticipate a hearty coopera-
tion from each and all. We rejoice in what we are sure will
be a very generous response to realize the winning of our goal.

Dear Mr. President:
q-c
I am going to send you something that
will remind you that lumber and human-
ity is a great thing.
This cane was cut from a tree a good
many years ago. It was nature that
made it as it is. It fits a man's
hand. The same as nature made you
president of the United States, a man
that we have waited for a good many
years to put this country on the right
road to prosperity.
Mr. Roosevelt, I don't want you to feel
insulted for this cane and I don't sup-
pose you will use it but you can say that
it is nature that made it SO. If you
don't feel insulted about this cane I
would like to have you remember me on
this job of the 250,000 men that you are
going to put to work.
I am an able worker and I have had a lot
of experience in construction work.
Mr. President, I don't want to put you
under obligation of any kind. I am 47
years old and a citizen of the United States.
I weigh 185 lbs., and in good health. I
also have to support my family.
Mr. Roosevelt, if I have said anything on
this letter that is not right I want you
to forgive me. I know that you will be
the best presidnet this country has ever
had.
