I think we ought to make an appeal (to Governor Lehman) and I would be willing to organize a group to point out to him that the Jews have a friend in the White House, and if he could help the President by running again, it is his duty to his race to do so, "etc. The second thing is:- "I am coming down with that group who are going to present the President with that Cabinet of cigers on Friday. D. fice McKeesport Pa Harth May 25, 1936 My dear Mr. President: It is my privilege to send you a copy of my book, The Explosive Theory of the Universe. It is a topic in which I think you may 11 be interested, and the work is the result of a long investigation I have made on the subject. While I know that you are always busily engaged, there probably are odd moments when you may wish to turn from the stress of other activities and in which you may find time to read through its pages. The book is for occasional reading and is written for those moments when one wishes to take perspective of the universe in which he plays his part. Without getting into the abstruse involutions of mathematical formulae, you may be interested in the accounting for the absorption of motion, the principle of the persistence of energy. Then, too, the accounting for the maintenance of stellar temperatures by a resupply of energy directly from the basic atom field is a new theory. Again, that pure light travels in a straight line through a pure basic atom field is reciprocal, and not antagonistic, with the theory of light's curvature, since the character of all light that comes to us is necessarily modified. Perhaps unfortunately, the end of a cosmic cycle is too remote to be of service in helping solve the problems of the New Tax Bill or of the problems of corporation surplus taxes, but I believe that you, as with myself, are interested in a subject of this nature. I shall be pleased to have you accept this book with my compliments, and if, after its reading, you care to tell me your opinion, I shall be happy to learn he your thought. a I have the honor to remain, Faithfully yours, To Chaunburs WD The President of the United States Washington, D. Rosevelt x127 Most Honored Lady: Over a period of twenty years I have collected and saved four and five leaf clovers, which you know are a symbol of good luck. I have collected over five hundret and have pasted them around a handcolered portrait of Our beloved President in a form of a halo. I do firmly believe that this is the only collection of this kind in all the world and being an ardent and sincere admirer of Our beloved President I would so very much like to present Him with this collection if He would be kind enough to accept it. I would feel very much honored, and I hope I will not arouse His indignation with such a gift. But I can not send it by mail as the clovers are very fragile and I can not bring it myself, but if you would be in NewYork as you are often I could bring it to you, and I could trust you to take care of it, and to take it home with you. I am not superstitious, but I believe that it would bring the Honored President luck in his campain. I will close now with the sincere hope that my humble gift will be accepted. Thank To the President: hanch book right for Mr. President, Sir: We are indeed honored to present to you this rare bit of Americana and hope that during the P arduous duties of the present campaign you will derive a modicum of laughter from reading of a period that New York will know no more. add As a collector of Americana, as a member of the Holland Society of New York, above all, as a man who knows and loves New York, both as she is and as she was, you will find a wealth of amusing detail in this 8/24-34 brief albeit description entitled, "An Account of the Procession, Dinner and Ball Given in Honour of the Eman- cipation of Holland in the City of New York." hp The charm of the scene presented, not one whit idyllic, lies in the lustiness of its actors and in the graphic, bawdy, unexpurgated language of the report- er--Bless him: Whatever he lacks in polish and the re- finements of style, he more than compensates with a sharp and pungent wit. On charges of malice and mischief we cannot acquit him, but we gladly pardon all for his rich and hearty good-humor. With this token of our regard, Mr. President, go all our wishes for success in the coming election. Our heart-felt good-will can find no deeper, more sincere ex- pression of friendship than to say: God Be With You. Yours most sincerely, Zehix M. Cowell Felix M. " SHADY OAK FARM FORT WORTH TELEPHONE TEXAS 6-1766 August 18, 1936. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, White House, Washington, D.C. a.22 Dear Mr. President: The Hired Hand of Shady Oak Farm will ship to you, by express, August 20th, two "Jumbo" watermelons. We have had a good season in Texas this year. While the weather is slightly warm right now (which, by the way, is helpful to cotton), the watermelons should be fairly eatable. However, I am afraid the growing of the melons has not received very carefuly attention from the Hired Hand. As a matter of fact, he has neglected his farm duties woefully. Most of the time, I find him over at the Frontier Centennial trying to help Billy Rose with his "Jumbo", "Casa Manana" and some of his other remarkable shows. Don't ask me how I happened to find out. The Fort Worth Frontier Celebration, by the way, has everything, including customers. We were sure about the entertainment, but one never knows about the customers until the time arrives. Fortunately, the much needed and highly necessary persons (the CUSTOMERS) have shown up. You just must find time to visit our Centennial before it closes. All the critics and experts say "Casa Manana" and "The Last Frontier" are two of the greatest shows ever produced in America. "Jumbo" and "The Pioneer Palace" are equally as good. Just a word about things in Texas. We are getting along better than we have for many years - thanks to you. We have plenty of everything - livestock, agriculture, oil and CHEERFULNESS. Texas is glad it belongs to the Union, and while some of the boys and girls may not be altogether satis- fied, they sure would feel hurt if Uncle Sam should decide to give us back to Mexico. Incidentally, if you will have the melons taken out of the tubs and placed in cold storage for a few days, they will taste a lot better. I hope you have had a good vacation. We are looking forward to the visit of Johnnie and Franklin. Elliott and I are preparing to give them a real reception. M.Caree Sincerely, AGC.KD P.S: So far, Jesse has never loosened up with a loan for the Centennial. SHADY OAK FARM FORT WORTH TEXAS TELEPHONE 6-1766 -2- They continue to find one technicality after another. As a matter of fact, I don't think he ever intended to make the loan.
