PPF 9 PRESIDENT'S PERSONAL FILE Gifts C Sept. -Dec. 1938 broobbade September 14, 1938 q-C Dear Lois: Your letter of September first to the President has been received in his absence. I know he would want me to thank you ever so much for your kindness in sending him the draw- ing which you enclosed and to convey his very best wishes to you. Very sincerely yours, M. A. LeHand PRIVATE SECRETARY mma Lois Mae Cuhel, 400 East Gates Street, Saint Paul, Minnesota. read His worde instead of looking for ways to benefit onlynhimself and while doing this not considering human lives this world would the more peaceful and our nation much easier for you to manage. 400 East Gates Street Saint Paul, Minnesota September 1, 1938 Dear President Roosevelt, I wrote to you earlier in the summer, but I was informed by your secretary that you were on q vacation cruise, so I will try to reach you again. I am one of your handicaped friends at the Mary Helen Lindsay School for Crippled Children in Saint Paul, Minnesota. I like my school- mates can not run and play, as other children can do for my legs aren't as strong as they should be, but I am not infantile paralysis victim but had a illness which affected my nerve system what makes me shaky in my actions. My physical weakness is not going to set me back in this busy world for I have been gifted with artistic talent which I am going to further develope with special study so that I can probably became an artist what my country can be proud. Healthy girls (16) my age have sports and other junvinal activities ,instead I enjoy reading educational books, and the book I enjoy reading with most of all is the Bible for it revives me new hope and courage. I live close to God for He comforts me and puts love into my heart for every- one as well as supplies me with added patients and hope. I truly think if everyone both young and old would give some of their time to God and read His worde instead of looking for ways to benefit onlynhimself and while doing this not considering human lives this world would the more peaceful and our nation much easier for you to manage. I would appreciate a personal letter written by your own hand bu of course if you haven't time I wouldn't to trouble you for I know you a emmence responibility. CARTER, PRESIDENT FORT RECEIVE WORT H.TEXAS I 16AH 16 WHITE HOUSE Rec's be and December 17, 1938. BE. Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt, President United States, The White House, Washington, D.C. Think delicious tor turkey Dear Mr. President: P. Enclosed is a sample of the letter Mr. Carter sent out to nearly five hundred friends throughout the country concerning the Smoked Turkeys he shipped them. He thought you would be interested in seeing the general letter. With best wishes for the Holidays, I am Yours sincerely, Secy. K.Deahins to Mr. Carter. SHADY OAK FARM AMON CARTER FORT WORTH telephone TEXAS 6-1766 December 17, 1938. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, The White House, Washington, D.C. My dear Mr. President: Texas, the only State in the Union which has the privilege of withdrawing if it does not like its neighbors, has no idea of doing so, because everything is All-American down here. Even Congressman Dies will have to grant us a clear certificate on that. We like our neighboring States; in fact, we like everyone, and why shouldn't we, because we have everything which goes for happiness, prosperity and optimism. It's pretty hard to see the dragons for the fat Hereford calves, flowing oil wells, waving grain fields, snowy cotton fields, loaded orchards with pink grapefruit and soft shell pecans and full smoke houses - not overlooking America's outstanding No. Football Eleven, T. C. U. We just sorta feel that the U. S. A. is going to stick around for quite a while, and we intend to stick with it. We wish that you could be with us, ride one of the STAR TELEGRAM'S SPECIAL TRAINS to New Orleans Sugar Bowl New Years and watch our All-American T. C. U. Davey O'Brien, Ki Aldrich and their efficient helpers, under the tutelage of Coach Dutch Meyer, sweeten an already overflowing bowl of American Spirit. We might be discouraged, because out of the Nation's eleven All-American football players this year, only two came from T. C. U. But, as I said above, we like out neighbors and don't want to be selfish. If you can't be with us at The Bowl even where there is probably the most sugar, we hope you will at least tune in to us on the NBC during that game time - 1:15 P.M. E. S. T. The Shady Oaks Smoked Turkey, two of which are being expressed to you with our compliments, is like the Eagle - another All-American bird. They may be a trifle rich - blame that on the contented grasshoppers - but I think you will find them handy for nibbles during the Holidays. The Hired Hand has been SO busy bringing these turkeys along and then finally smoking them that he hasn't had time to join any of the 'Isms. You may eat with safety. -2- Yes, Fort Worth, West Texas and all Texas is 100% plus. Business is good, getting better. Everybody is happy, no one is alarmed. Shady Oak Farm is still running without Federal relief, but busily. So, from an All-American spot to an All-American friend, I wish you the Joys of the Season. Sincerely, A.Darees AGC.KD Where the West Beings. P.S: Just to prove how good things are down here, I'm enclosing a copy of a "Peace Proclamatio. If from Dallas, ending the recent "War of the Bowls - Sugar and Cotton". P. S. #2: Let's everybody stop complaining, aching and pouring water on the parade. We live in a grand country.
