My dear Mother Corning:
In the absence of the President, I
wish to acknowledge your recent letter and to
assure you, in his behalf, that your friendli-
ness in writing and your good wishes are most
gratifying.
Your desire to send the picture you
describe to the President is indeed very much
appreciated. However, the President does not
feel that he should deprive you of such an in-
teresting possession. I know he would want me
to thank you, nevertheless, for your generous
thought of him.
Very sincerely yours,

Your letter of July twenty-ninth has
been received and I want to thank you in the
President's behalf for the photograph which you

sent him under separate cover.
9-P
I wish it were possible to do as you
ask. However, the President is so very busy
these days that it is simply impossible to com-
ply with the great number of requests for his
signature which are constantly being received.
Any exception to the general rule of declining
them would mean discrimination. I am sure you
will understand.

Under separate cover attached I am sending you a copy of
a panoram photograph made today of the entire garrison at
Langley Field awaiting your inspection. You will note
your car in the center forground surrounded by officials.
I would like to have your personal signature on the negative
from which this print was made, and am taking the liberty
to ask you, if you would sign this negative and return it
immediately, if I mailed same to you? Your signature added
to this fine picture would make it a most cheerished memento
with the entire personel of the field.
Kindly advise by return mail if you would favor me with
this signature and if so, I will mail the negative, special

to sign it.

Dear Mr. President:
I am enclosing a copy of a little fantasy entitled "Alice
in Virusland" with the hope that, in this time of storm and
stress, it may give you one or two of your heartiest laughs.
I wish also to express my appreciation of your efforts in
fostering the "National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis".
I have been working with the virus of poliomyelitis for many
years and more recently have received liberal grants from that
foundation to aid the studies. I am especially happy there-
fore to present to you this little bi-product of my work in
the virus field and hope that you may find time to read it.
I think you will particularly enjoy the Coccus and the Spir-
ochaete (on page 8) in lieu of the Walrus and the Carpenter
and the description and most recent "snapshot" of a virus on
page 16.
Respectfully yours,
Paul Flash

Office of the President of the United States,

White House,
Washington, D. C.
Under date of September 21st, 1940, our branch
Post Office sent a package addressed to the Honorable
President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt and
wife. The package contained an Ivory Cross and, thereon, a
figure. This package was sent by insured mail from Mrs.
Caroline Connally, who resides at 5819 Oram Street, Dallas,
Texas.
Mrs. Connally is a Rumanian and has resided in this
country several years and is a very patriotic citizen of the
United States, and is one of the President's most ardent
admirers, and holds a very high esteem for him. She has not
received any reply or acknowledgment and does not know whether
the package went astray, or if it reached President Roosevelt.
Mrs. Connally enclosed a card about the Cross and regarded it
as a very sacred emblem, which was sent as a token of her
friendship, and the friendship that Mr. Roosevelt, as Presi-
dent of the United States, has shown toward down-trodden
people of the small European nations.
One of the reasons that she is SO grateful for the
liberty and freedom she enjoys in this country, is that she
had two brothers who were in the Rumanian Army and were killed
by the Russian Army in border clashes. This was prior to the
time that the Russians invaded Rumania.
We would like to let her know if the package has been
received and if you will let us know, it will be appreciated.
Yours respectfully,

Dear Mr. Roosevelt:
pp7208
That was a great speech you made in Philadelphia
last night- and timely, for I myself had forgotten some
of the accomplishments of your Administration.
Ray Tucker's column of yesterday carried the re-
mark that you "received with pained incredulity" reports
of Willkie's gains. I read with pained incredulity that
you could imagine that he could make enough gains between
now and Kingdom Come to Its beat dullness. you His campaign is so
"dated" as to be pitiful And its futility is rapidly
compromising him to the low level of becoming merely the
voters' choice against the third term.
With this I am sending with my compliments a copy
of my recent book Your Stars and Destiny. You will be
interested personally in the chapter Roosevelt and America,
and possibly in the chapter The Incredible Triple Coin-
cidence.
If you should have use for additional copies I shall
be happy to provide them.

Permit me to send you under separate cover, a re-
cording of two campaign songs that we have been using
with great success in Southern California, entitled
"Vote for Roosevelt" and "Sunny Side of Heaven" written
by Mrs. Celia Sattinger and the undersigned.
The record was made this last Saturday and since
then has had a great distribution through the offices of
our Assembly District, the County Central Committee, the
Democratic National Committee for Southern California,
and the Young Democrats.
The records have been distributed for use at meetings,
on sound trucks, entertainments and in the home. All
funds received from their use, are turned over to the
Democratic Headquarters, for the Roosevelt-Wallace campaign.
Because this recording has been so enthusiastically
and instantaneously received, it was suggested by our local
Democratic organizations that a copy be immediately for-
warded to you for your pleasure and for any use in the
campaign that you may deem fit and proper.
I trust that the record meets with your approval.
Its composers only hope that it may in some way, however small,
be effectual in your re-election as the President of our
United States.
With the prayers and good wishes of the people of
California for your re-election, I remain
