PPF 9 PRESIDENT'S PERSONAL FILE Gifts G Jan. -Feb. 1934 2 PPF900278 O. H. CROSS COMMITTEE: 11TH DISTRICT BANKING AND CURRENCY TEXAS ERNEST H. DONOHOO Congress of the United States SECRETARY house of Representatives Washington, D.C. January 1, 1934. GP9-G President Franklin D. Roosevelt, The White House. My dear Mr. President: I am just in receipt of a letter from Miss Esther Gross of my home city of Waco, Texas, advising me that the Gross Girls have forwarded to you and Mrs. Roosevelt two Confection Baskets as New Year gift remembrances. They are apprehensive that you would not like to partake of this confection since they were sure you were receiving such from all parts of the country, and have asked that I write you a letter along this line. I have known these ladies for some twenty years and no finer characters ever lived and it will be perfectly all right for you and Mrs. Roosevelt to eat anything which they may have sent you as no more loyal Democrats ever lived and they are truely high class citizens. Wishing for you and yours Health and Prosperity during this New Year, I am, Sincerely yours, pp7 467 OKCross X 9-B ppt. 9.g January 3, 1934 My dear Herman: The President has received your note and has asked me to tell you how much he ap reciates your thoughtfulness in sending the bookmark to him. Gresham, Esq., 1314 Quinby Building, 650 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, California. jmh Return two copies of "Land Sharks" under separate cover. Sincerely yours, Robert J. Gusham IN replying, PLEASE REFER TO ABOVE FILE NUMBER ROBERT J. GRESHAM ATTORNEY-AT-LAW -304 FIDELITY-BUILDING - SIXTH-AND-SPRING STREETS LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA PHONE MICHIGAN 3951 1314 Quinby Building, FILE NO. 650 S. Grand Avenue. January 30, 1934. Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt, The White House, Washington, D. C. My dear Mr. President: I am sending you three copies of my book, "Land Sharks," two of which I trust you will autograph and date on this your first birthday in The White House, and the other copy is for you, which I trust sometime you may find time to read. I am a lifelong Mississippi Democrat, but strayed from that State and have adopted California for my home, and it was particularly gratifying that we helped to swell the returns from this State in the November landslide. I am sending the books today, because I did not want to have them arrive at the same time as thousands of letters, telegrams and gifts in general, adding to the burden of those whose duty it was to look after them. Tonight as I listened to your voice over the radio, I thought what a marvelous age this is when the President can from The White House talk to every individual in the nation who can get to a radio. But when I reflect that commingled with the marvels of this age there are graft, racketeering and a hundred other unethical and criminal practices carried on, I was made to wonder if after all we have just cause to boast. I believe your administration will go down in history as one of the outstanding administrations, not SO much for your efforts to alleviate human suffering and distress due to unemployment, but because of your attitude towards such unethical and criminal practices, and the stress placed on the necessity of getting back to old fashioned honesty. The heart of America is still sound, but how long can it remain so when lying next to it is greed, graft and political corruption. With courage and perseverence such evils can be reduced to the minimum, if not eradicated. I am confident you will never find time to read this my humble tribute, yet I've derived great satisfaction by talking to the President in this letter. Sincerely yours, Robert J.Gisham IN REPLYING, PLEASE REFER TO ABOVE FILE NUMBER Freeno ppt. To call you Neighbor is to me a greater privelege than calling you President because, I know when you lean on the cane you will feel the strength of the fiber and will know the the People of California posess the same kind of fiber as is woven by nature into this Manzanito cane. May you receive this token to your fifty-second anniversary and, to your great spirit of love and Neighborship for the Peopleof the world as is manifest in your continuous struggle for their betterment. And again, when you take this cane in your hand it is hoped you will feel the pulse-beats of we People here in the west and will also know, that on next Tuesday they will show their appreciation of your wonderful work in the founding of the Warm Springs Foundation, and this cane is but an humble expression of that wonderful spirit which has and will continue to carry you on in the Noble work you have shouldered.
