Many interesting courses have been given to meet special conditions. A group of nuns, whose work is with small, blind children, spent eight intensive days in the school taking in- struction in forms of handwork suitable for their little charges. A group of occupatonal therapists took a ten weeks' course in projects that cost five cents or less. Three missionaries from distant parts of the world have learned techniques that could be used with materials found in the countries in which they serve. The headmaster of a boys' school took a special course to keep his boys busy on rainy days. A business man from Florida worked out his dream of utilizing plant forms when making tiles. Infantile paralysis cases have provided interesting challenges in forcing the use of both hands. One of these students comments that it is a lot more fun making a big basket than it is to do calisthenics. SCHOOL OF HANDICRAFTS THE UNIVERSAL PLAN UNFOLDS The phenomenal growth of the Universal School of Handicrafts in Rockefeller Center testifies to the rising tide of recognition accorded handicraft activity for its cultural and therapeutic values. Private and public schools all over the country, including many of our leading universities, have adopted forms of handwork as part of their regu- lar curriculum. Hospitals and other institutions have demonstrated beyond doubt the value of handicrafts for bringing mentally and physically sick people back to health. Creative centers and groups are springing up like mushrooms in rural community and city alike. People find a new joy as they learn to make things of beauty with their hands in their chosen medium. Roosevelt, President of The United States of America, White House, Washington; D.C. Dear President: My name is Clifford Lester and I am taking this opportunity to write to you and to let you know that I am doing everything in my power in this part of the country to continue you in office. I am a former president of the Teamsters Union of this city and I have a wide acquaintance with the laboring men of this community and of this county. Realising a I can from my connection with the teamster's union all that you have done for the working people I am constantly engaged in tring to get you the labor vote in this community one hundred per cent. I am enclosing a picture of my truc with your picture on it. I drive this truck aroung Oakland and Alameda County every day and if you dont get all the labor vote here it wont be because I have not tried to line it up for you. At the present time I am not connected with the Teamster's Union because my ideas conflict with the "higher-ups" in that organization but I have always been a union labor man and I know that labor never had a better friend in the White House than your excellency. In conclusion may I say that I am putting this truck out at my own expense so that I can in my own way do something to repay you for all you have done for the working class of this country. Dear Mr. Roosevelt: will spare a few moments to our plea. If I am not presuming too much I would be grateful if you I am one of several Honey Producers of the Apalachicola River Valley, in Gulf County, Florida the Home of the Farmous Tupeloo Honey. It will not granulate or ferment, and is the best Honey Produced in the U.S.A. It is the only Honey that can be eaten by those suffer- ing with diabetes. I have depended practically all together for the past 35 years, for my livelihood on producing this Tupelo Honey. We had a good market and a good price, for all we could produce, until the Hoover depression came in 1931, since then markets have been dull, with very slow demands. We are hoping that you will make our Famous Tupelo Honey, a regular diet for our Army and Navy. I am sending you prepaid one 5 gallon Tin of this Famous Tupelo Honey, for you and your Friends to try the Quality of it, and if you like you may have the contents analyzed. It is high in fruit sugar and low in can sugar. We honey producers greatly appreciate the Wonderful President you have made, and are working for you 100% We feel confident of your Re-election. November 20th, 1940. Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of the United States of America, ack 16 as 1n Washington, D. C. My Dear President: It is with the deepest of pleasure that I am today sending you under separate cover to your home at Hyde Park, New York, a hand hooked rug in red, white and blue, in the center of which is the words "FIRESIDE CHATS". The occasion for this is the fact that we as Democrats, myself, husband, Mother and Son, thought that in part it might convey to you the sincere feelings of one of many families in the United States, as to how they felt about your past record and your third term, of which weare very proud and happy. A little history concerning the rug: The burlamp is a Sea Island Sugar sack, the woolen material is the clothing of many of our Sparks and Reno Nevada school children as well as University Boys. It consists of six sweaters and five little woolen ski ts. Each article was washed, sterlized and deodorized, and stripped by my Mother. I designed the pattern and hooked it myself in ten days. Every stitch was a pleasure, and for every stitch that is in it, may you live just that long in days, and longer to continue to guide our beloved America to brighter, happier and more prosperous days, that the little children, whose cloths went to make this, and all of the other children of America, may enjoy a full life in this great country of ours. We sincerel hope that you will enjoy this rug as much as we who are sending it to you, emjoy doing so. I started this rug the night I was positive of your victory, and that was at 10;45 Western Day light time, or Pacific Daylight time. Will you when again talking to Mr. Jesse H. Jones, ive my kindest regards to him, and tell that as a little girl I played on his yard where his home stood out on Main Street, in Houston, Texas, and that we listen to his talks often, and that it takes us back home each time in memories and thoughts. Again wishing you and your wife a long and happy life together, may you serve us many moons, and if necessary and you can stand it, may you run again, and if you do, I'll be at the poles again to vote for you. mary Sincerely Mary A. Onclose press selece copy. of my Sincerely yours John Loughlin Illinois State Building September 26, 1940 Press Release No. 309: Last year five prizes were awarded Mr. John J. Loughlin, 133 E. 35th Street, New York City, from Underwood & Underwood, official photographers of the New York World's Fair of 1939. This year up-to-date he has received six honorable mentions from the New York World's Fair Photographers Society of America. He has taken unusual shots of the Perisphere and Trylon, the theme picture of the New York World's Fair, which are very hard to duplicate. Judging the picture of Abraham Lincoln by the New York World's Fair Photographers Society of America, Mr. Loughlin was honorably mentioned. This picture was taken on a moonlight night and will be hard to duplicate. It was taken with an ancient box Brownie Kodak which Mr. Loughlin has used for about twenty years, which proves it is the man behind the camera. In this connection, I might say that each week the Photographic Society of America have different judges and this makes me feel that Mr. Loughlin's picture has won their merit. This proves that any individual had as much of a chance to win as anybody else. I do think the contest was really judged by the merit of its pictures. The same applies to Underwood & Underwood, who, as stated above, were the official photographers of 1939, New York World's Fair. Mr. Loughlin wants to thank the judges through the press, who were the judges of the Photographic Society of America for selecting his pictures as honorable mention, also Underwood & Underwood, who awarded him prize pictures. The Louisville, Kentucky papers are going to copy the Abraham Lincoln picture and put it in their rotogravure sections. This picture will also be published February 10, 1941 in the News Edition of America Chemical Society, Washington, D. C. of which Mr. Harrison E. Howe is editor. This magazine is very popular and this picture will be seen throughout the country. This picture stands out as one of Mr. Loughlin's best shots at the entire Fair. He has submitted this famous Lincoln picture "With Malice Toward None" to register of copyrights, Library of Congress, Washington, D. C. One of the most photographed objects on the Fair grounds is this picture of Abraham Lincoln by C. D. V. Hunt known as "Malice Toward None" and a picture of which Mr. Loughlin presented to Honorable Henry Horner, Governor of the State of Illinois.
