SEATTLE LODGE No. 92, B. P. O. ELKS
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON
October 18, 1937
My dear Noble and President:
Sharte
I am taking the liberty and the privilege of
sending you these few lines, with reference to your trip
out here on the Coast, and desire to say that the people
of Washington and the Coast approve of every step that you
have taken with reference to war and peace. I am sure, as
your mother has said, you desire to serve all the people,
regardless of religion or politically, in any manner.
After living here in Seattle for twenty-seven years, from
my personal observation and contact with the Orientals in
Seattle and on the Coast, I can/see that they are in any
way benefit to the people on the Coast or the United States.
They are strong for Japan, who we know desires to control
that great nation and homeloving people of China, and if
they ever do, the United States will have to pay some of
the debt created by Japanese aggression.
For your personal information, the Japanese here
in Seattle control a good deal of our industrial life. They
own all kinds of business, especially big hotels, dëpartment
stores and wholesale grocery houses and big business in
Tacoma, and they control the fruit business of the Coast.
They are here to get all they can out of the U.S. I presume
you are familiar with these conditions.
Now, before closing, I am sending you a jar of
face cream, for massaging the face, hands and body. This
cream creates circulation and removes wrinkles, and makes
a beautiful skin. And if you will use this jar every
night and every morning, you will find it beneficial. I
got this idea from my mother fifty years ago, and it is
made from mutton tallow and the purest of olive 0115 I
send it to you not with the idea to commercialize it in
any way.
I can't forget you ever, of the kindness through
you and the Home Loan bank in Chicago that made that loan
to my daughter on her home, and she's paying back and making
good. So, with all my best wishes, from a Noble Shriner,

hope to design and present to the President.
We have been over the design and have

wish he would enjoy the chair.
Will you talk to them and give them
some idea, or show them a chair the President
likes, so they may make one?

My dear John:
I have your letter of November seventeenth
about the "Good Neighbor" chair. As you know, a
very nice young chap was down here and took the
measurements, etc.
xpp79-l
Frankly, but confidentially, I do not
think that it would be quite proper to arrange
for them to present it to the President, especially
down here in Washington.
In spite of the fact that it is & "Good
Neighbor" affair, there is & commercial aspect to
it and I fear the precedent set would prove
embarrassing.
Instead, may I suggest that when the chair
is ready they arrange to send it out to Hyde Park
and put it in his office ready for use the next
time he comes up. While he is there, we might
arrange for one or two of them to drop in to see
the President and let him thank them for it.
If you could arrange it this way, it would
be much appreciated.

Writes the President regarding the "over life size bust" which he has made of
him, and for which the President posed. Writes that he has been very ill for the
past few weeks, but in a week or two leter he will be stronger, and asks if someone
close to the President is in New York at that time, that the President have them drop
in to the studio and look at the bust. Says there are to be many copies made and placed
throughout the country and that there has been a proposal to erect a gigantic 15 foot
head in Hyde Park, and asks if the President would be agreeable to this. Also says
that he will have ready in 8 month or two enother small model, as the one for which
the President expressed 8 desire to have was so badly cast. Says if the President
would like to see the large head, he could go to Washington with it in January.--
Attached is a letter of same date from Mr. Martinesu to Col. McIntyre stating that because
of the latter's great devotion to the President, he would like to present to him a
ministure bronze of the President. --On Dec. 27th, Col. McIntyre replied to Mr.
Martineau re the above saying he would be delighted to have the small model, and also
saying that he thinks the small replica will enable the President to see just how the
work turned out, etc.

I sure would appreciate it very much if you will help
me. I started to work on Nov. 4, 1936 and I was 3 yrs back on
interest on $2000 mortgage and 1 yr tax, SO I went for welfare and
they got me a job. I worked all summer of yr. 1937 and was laid
off Oct. 10, 1937 because they claim I had good crops. The crops
out of 30 acres land was $600.00 and I had to pay 022 qt. for
picking and had $400.00 left. I paid 3 yrs interest $120.00 yr.
including 1935,1936,1937 and I paid $360.00. I'm caught up on my tax &
insurance on house. I got laid off Oct. 10, 1937 because the W.P.A.
Office of Buffalo of East Delvan said that I had some income on 1½ ?
of grapes. I sold it for $15.00 ton. I got 2 ton for $30.00. Now
I'm asking you how can my wife, child, I and 2 horses live all
winter.
Will you please send me an answer at once for I'm in
great need. I want some help from you. I'm willing to work at
anything enough to support my family.

Miss Le Hand,
Secretary to the President,

White House,
Washington, D. C.
Dear Miss Le Hand:-
I am happy to have your acknowledg-
ment of my little effort, and pleased to see that the
President received same and I hope that I did not impose
on him by sending it.
Knowing that he is a Stamp Collector
the same as I am and having a very large collection which
I have been making for the last 40 years, I am wondering
whether the President would be interested in receiving
some local deliveries. Some collectors do not bother with
this type of stamp, others make a specialty thereof and the
general collector might be interested therein. I am not
sure however whether the President is a general collector
or is specializing.
With my many interests such as
collecting data on Abraham Lincoln, Flying, Stamp Collec-
ting, etc., I have been more or less lax with my stamps.
Knowing however that the President
is very active in his collecting, I am wondering whether
he would accept if he is interested therein, with my
compliments, a very nice collection of local deliveries.
I do not guarantee they are all authentic, but, in any
case, they have a considerable value from a point of view
of history of the Post Office Department before general
stamps were in effect.
At this time, may I extend to you
best wishes for the coming year.
Very Sincerely, Maicuse

Honorable Franklin D. Roosevelt,
Thank
Washington, My President, dear Mr. President: D. C. ackid 12/30/2018 mc
Because of his gratitude for the blessings of
your administration, there is being mailed to you today,
from Fayetteville, a box containing two holly and mistletoe
wreaths, fashioned by the crippled hands of Mr. M. M.
Mason, of Big Chimney, West Va. One of these is for you
and the other for Mrs. Roosevelt.
Before he lost the sight of one eye and three
fingers of one hand, Mr. Mason was a miner. Since that
time he has been a tenant farmer. He has had a rather
hard time, but has kept the spark of gratitude alive in
his breast and it finds expression at this glad season of
the year in his gift of these wreaths to you and Mrs.
Roosevelt, with his best wishes for a Merry Christmas and
a Happy New Year. An acknowledgement of these gifts will
reach Mr. Mason at Big Chimney, West Va. He brought them
a distance of more than 60 miles for me to send you, he
having seen your autographed picture on the walls of my
office.

The boys in my shop makde this gift and desire that I forward it

It is made of native Missouri walnut, and I suggest when you
find one who opposes the New Deal, just reverse the hand hold and
swing it.
May I have a good photograph of you so the boys may place it
in the shop.
