My dear Mr. President:
I am taking the liberty of mailing to you this date
under separate cover a. desk ornament with a slogan that seems to me at
this time to be most appropriate.
In my opinion the many defense plants throughout the
country, and the various Government agencies in Washington and our other
xpt)
defense communities throughout the United States have a confusing number
of signs -"Don't Do This" and "Don't Do That" on bulletin boards.
9-H
I have secured the copyright to this Uncle Sam's hat,
with the wording "KEEP IT UNDER YOUR HAT - DONT TALK!". We, as Americans,
have been in the habit of boasting as to what type of work we are doing,
how very superior our workmanship is, and the excellence of inventions we
are now developing.
Therefore I believe that every industry engaged in
defense work and every Government office handling vital statistics should
display one of these to remind us that "Silence is Golden" - and talking
helps defeat the purpose for which you are toiling SO valiantly.
I believe this hat and slogan is in keeping with
the trend of your conversations with the American people in your fireside
chats,
Sincerely hoping that God will grant you the health,
strength and fortitude to lead us to our inevitable VICTORY, I am

your letter of March seventeenth, as I ar-
range all appointments for the President.
I am sorry it will not be possible
for you or some member of your firm to pre-
sent to the President in person the two mil-
lionth 40-millimeter cartridge case to come
from your factory. But I know you understand
pr79-c
how difficult it is for the President to take
time out during these critical days for pres-
entations of this kind. Since our entry into
the war he has designated me to act on his be-
half in such instances; and if it meets with
your approval I shall be glad to receive you
or any other representative of the Motor Wheel
Corporation here at the Executive Offices at
a mutually convenient time. I will of course
await your further advice.
With all good wishes,
Sincerely yours,

Dear Mac:
Confirming our conversation of Sunday, the
Corporation would deem it a great honor to be allowed to
present the two millionth 40 millimeter cartridge case
to the President. This case will probably come off our
production line in about three weeks.
This production is all since December 30th and
we feel quite proud of our record.
I would deeply appreciate your letting me know
if this presentation could be arranged.
With kindest personal regards.

The Honorable Franklin D.Roosevelt
President of the United States,
March acb 18th, 1942
The White House,
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. President:-
Under separate cover via Parcel Post I am
sending you two Statuettes, one of Prime Minister Churchill
and one of yourself, to commemorate your recent meetings.
The Statuettes were carved from Brazilian
Jarina Nuts by one of your Brazilian admirers.
They came into my possession in connection
with my duties as Manager of the Trade Development Bureau
of Moore-McCormack Lines, Inc.
As a result of the policies you inaugurated
in connection with the interchange of goods within the Western
Hemisphere many new products have been discovered which were
previously unknown in the United States.
The Jarina Nut which is known as vegetable
ivory is found in the Southwestern part of the Amazonas, in
Brazil, and in the territory of Acre. In the absence of animal
ivory, this product appears to have a bright future in prospect.
Respectfully yours,
Jamedernach Medernach

Dear Mr. President,
My wife and I join heartily in the birthday
greetings; we also wish to reaffirm our confidence in your
wise and firm leadership; and to express our personal
affection for you and Mrs. Roosevelt.
The earliest copy of my Life of the Great Admiral,
just off the press, has been sent to you with my compliments
and thanks for your encouragement and assistance in that
enterprise. If you have a moment it may amuse you to read
what Columbus thought of those Caribbean coasts with which
you are familiar. I hope that you and I may have a sailing
cruise there after the war is over.
Faithfully yours,
Samuel Warison

and from the ship's company of the Prince of Wales. Nor will I ever forget the
privilege of meeting your gallent husband, and especially of attending divine service
that day in Newfoundland last August when he read the lesson. Nothing I can say will
be of much help but I want you and your son to know that very many Americans have been
thinking of you." - The President also # rote to The Right Honorable Albert Victor

sent to him by Franklin, Jr., and enclosing note to Mrs. Leach for delivery; and saying

My dear Mr. McLaughlin:

Your recent letter has been received
and I am sorry that we cannot do as you ask.
The pressure of the President's official duties
is so extremely heavy that it simply is impos-
sible for him to comply with the many requests
of this kind which are being received. I know
you will understand.
Very sincerely yours,
GRACE G. TULLY
