In addition to his position with the Tea Committee, Mr. Nakamura is a Member of the House of Peers, and when in the United States in 1934 called at the White House on Mr. Early on August twenty-seventh for the purpose of presenting to the President and Mrs. Roosevelt a case of Japanese tea. Ambassador Saito states in his note that he has re- ceived an additional twenty cans of green tea for distri- bution among the President's "official family", if agree- able. I The Honorable Marvin H. McIntyre, Assistant Secretary to the President, The White House. - 2 - I see no objection to the President accepting the two cans of green tea offered to him personally. I doubt the wisdom, however, of accepting the additional twenty cans of tea for distribution among the President's "official family". May I however, ask your kind indulgence to read the sentiments of my inner feelings and desires. I fully realize that the President, re- ceives great quantities of letters and gifts daily. But for one to expect a personal answer or acknow- ledgment to a letter or a gift, would be absurd. In my case however, I feel it to be different, for the reason that my token to the President, is not a photograph, etching or struck up in the ordinary 11 and usual manner of tokens. I accomplished my desired results of this composition, only after three months of undivided efforts and concentration with my (engraver's) tools, and so would greatly appreciate a personal acknow- ledgment from the President. I desire that this personal letter of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the President of these United States of America, to remain with my heirs, after my passing from this Earthly Stage. I do not only attach this great sentiment to a letter from the President, because he is the President of these United States of America, but also because of his greatness, as a Man.
