My dear Mr. President: I attach copy of letter received from Arthur J. O'Sullivan, brother of Raymond J. O'Sullivan, who was secretary to John Curry when he was leader of Tammany Hall. I also attach copy of the book referred to in the letter. Faithfully yours, In Honorable Franklin D. Roosevelt, The White House. JAF:SJM COPY THE NEWS 220 East Forty Second St. New York December 31, 1935. Hon. James A. Farley, Postmaster General, 3 East 84th Street, New York City, N. Y. Dear General Farley: At the suggestion of my brother, Raymond J. O'Sullivan, and with my compliments, I am enclosing two (2) copies of a monetary treatise, written back in 1908 by my now deceased Father, recently reprinted with a new title and a foreword by the writer. I come with no conceit, General, when I declare that my esteemed Father, who consumed a life-time in the study of money, and its application to peoples, undeniably had come to know con- siderably more than most men of his time. The book has stood up for more than a quarter of a century. When revising it all that was necessary was to change the tense. It is now prepared as a text-book. A great part of the "Q" and "A" was the work of my Father and I have added to it with material he left with me. Incidentally, all, not some, but all of the various points now raised about gold and silver, and their employment as moneys, are discussed and answered in that portion of the book. The book is devoid of tables. We make no claim to continuity but we do claim a sequence for the book. Here, General, is a Monetary Bowdich which furnishes a truer course; meanwhile, while not scoffing at the theories of other men, furnishes answers to a majority of the questions now raised by the Felix Frankfurters, the Dr. Spragues the Alfred E. Smiths and others. And the book plows deeper into the subject of Social Justice than our esteemed loveable radio speaker at Detroit. I say that respectfully, for the crusade he has started will interest thinking men for decades to come. If it is not an imposition on your time and energies, may I say that I will appreciate it if you will personally see that the enclosed extra copy reaches our distinguished President, with the suggestion he be not startled by the title. A glance at the -2- book's index may furnish him with some very interesting material in the days before him. Say to him that I tender the book as a true American. With Ray's best wishes as well as my own, I am, Respectfully yours, /s/ Arthur J. O'Sullivan \ Puchly P.P.A. Like Oliver Twist, I know of no collector who does not ask for more, the "more" in this instance being a desire to know whether the famous expression "New Deal" did not come from Mark Twains' "Connecticut Yankee". Twain used the same words when he disapproved of the way King Arthur was running the government, recommending a "new deal".
