on page 26, the proclamation of Her Majesty, the
Queen of the Netherlands on Moral Re-Armament on
page 49, the statement of His Majesty, the King of
the Belgians on page 54, the Manifesto of British
Labour on page 16, the statement of Lord Baldwin

that of the Scottish leaders on page 29.
After the strain and disillusionment
of recent months in the international scene, the
New Year presents an opportunity to voice for
America such a positive and constructive program
as Moral Re-Armament represents. In your first
speech of the New Year at the opening of Congress,
this note may be most valuable in creating for the
nation an atmosphere of confidence and faith. Such
a lead on your part would certainly have a world
echo and would be received with gratitude by re-
sponsible statesmen in England and throughout
Europe, as well as by countless Americans who hold
you in highest esteem.
With heartfelt good wishes for the
New Year,
Yours very sincerely,
Ray Foote Purdy

My dear Mr. Preacher:
The President asks me to tell you
how deeply he appreciates your kindness in
sending him the brochure, "Camping with Presi-
dent Roosevelt." He is looking forward with
interest to reading this little book and thinks
it was very thoughtful of you to inscribe it
and to present it to him.

Dear Mr. President:
Mr. B.F. Pettigrew, an aged and ill blacksmith whose
business all but disappeared with the late horse age, is sending
you under separate cover a carving knife of his own make. It matches
a fork he sent you previously.
I am entirely familiar with the White House attitude to-
ward precedent setting in sending money to the thousands of writers
to seek to touch the President's heart-strings, knowing of course,
that he both human and humane.
Mr. Pettigrew, however, has had a most difficult time
with a broken leg, is behind with his rent, and while the knife he
sends is a gift in every respect, he will appreciate any consideration
given him.
Very truly yours
