Encloses to the President booklet a portiolio of a of twenty-six silk screen prints, illustrating
the great speech of Vice President Wallace on "The Century of the Common Man". These
prints are the work of Hugo Gellert, eminent American artist. Their organization
considers Mr. Wallace's speech a creative thought weapon for victory. Mr. Gellert
conceived the idea of allying art with the printed word to spread this message
throughout the United States and its allies. They would be happy to present the
President with a gift portfolio of the twenty silk-screen prints. Hope they may

Writes to the President saying he is sending him a souvenir of the President's
visit to Marrakech. The writer says he hopes the President will enjoy it and he
wishes that he could have delivered it in person. Says that Secretary McClay has
offered to d eliver the book to the President. Says the President's visit was such
a great pleasure and an honor for him. ---The President, March 31st, wrote to Mr.
Pendar saying that the wonderful collection of prints has arrived and will always
be a reminder of his visit to Marrakech. The President said he thought that if he
had ever done water colors that he would have stayed over with Mr. Churchill. The
President commented on the beauty of the house and the gardens at which Mr. Pendar
lived. The President said it seems difficult to realize in those peaceful surround-
ings that French North Africa has become such a political football - that Marrakech
seemed far from wars and rumors of wars. The President thanked Mr. Pendar for his
hospitality and said it was good to see Mr. Pendar. (penciled note - Series A and

Writes to the President recalling to him the new species of palm that they got on
Cocos Island during the 1938 cruise which Dr. 0. 7. Cook described and nemed for the
President, Rooseveltie franklinisns. Tells of Dr. Cook's interest in the "conings and
goings" of the President; says that the President's recent African visit moved Dr.
Cook to bring the writer a brief study of his entitled "A Scientific Approach to Afri-
can Colonization". States "I am sure it will appeal to you as much as it has to me".
Dr. Schmitt states that in this study Dr. Cook has gathered together a greet many
things of interest bearing on African colonization and the American Negro, including
the reproduction of a portion of a rare and generally forgotten exposition of a "Plan
for liberating the Negross within the United States", advanced by Ferdinando Fairfax,
of Richmond, Va., in 1790. Expresses his opinion that Africa is in for a reqwakening,
in the light of current events taking place there. Adds that should the President be
so moved, Dr. Cook would, he is sure, deeply appreciate some little word of acknowl-
edgeent of the enclosed reprints.-- 3/30/43 the President wrote to Dr. Cook thanking
him for making it possible for him to see Dr. Cook's study, above mentioned. The Presi-
dont states that "Both my recent trip to Liberia and Dr. Schmitt's complimentary dea-
cription add to the interest with which I look forward to on opportunity to peruse it."-
The President, on 3/30/43, also wrote to Dr. Schmitt thanking him in connection with

preaching to encourage people to turn from their sinful ways
to God and to go to church. We also give them a copy of the
New Testament, a very nice little Bible to carry and read.
Seven hundred fifty of these have been given out in our plant.
In an interview with Mr. Winegar, personnel
officer, he told us that we had done a splendid work toward
breaking down the wall of color distinction. Indeed we have
a chorus of colored employees that sing for us on a local
radio station (WJBK Detroit).
We thought that you would be interested to know
about our work toward helping our great nation spiritually.
We are identified in the plant as the Peaceful Valley

respect of all department heads and our fellow workers, also
of our Union heads, Local 140 UAW CIO.
We are sending you two copies of our testaments.
Mr. Keller and Mr. Winegar each have a copy. During our visit
to Mr. Winegar we noticed the testament on his desk and it
looked as if it had been used quite & bit. He also told us
that during his trying hours he would turn and read a portion
of this testament and found it very much a comfort to him.
Our most important thought in sending this

RECEIVED
Washington, D. C.
Sir:
May we bring to your attention a timely and important book which has been
receiving high priase from both military and civilian authorities, one
which we feel sure you will wish to recommend further?
THE PSYCHOLOGY OF MILITARY LEADERSHIP - written by a psychology professor
(Dr. L. A. Pennington), an Army officer (the late Lieutenant Colonel R. B.
Hough, Jr.), and an industrial personnel specialist (Dr. Harry W. Case) -
was planned to fill an acute need of our Armed Forces, that of training
better officer material. To be a successful leader, the army officer must
have a thorough knowledge of military psychology - the science of human
engineering as applied to military life.
Specifically, the book deals with the problems that confront the officer in
training, drilling, and directing effectively. The emphasis throughout has
been on the actual "how-to-do-it" techniques, based upon currently accepted
military theory and practice. The U. S. Army Basic Arms Manuals have been
followed closely, thus assuring the authenticity of the technical information.
THE PSYCHOLOGY OF MILITARY LEADERSHIP will be equally valuable in all branches
of the armed services. Older officers will find it a stimulating refresher;
newly-commissioned officers will find it an excellent guide in their new
duties and responsibilities; and officer aspirants will find that it provides
a clear picture of what is expected in officers of the United States Armed
Forces.
As a contribution towards Victory, we feel that this book is a timely instru-
ment of war and deserves your consideration. In military courses or for
individual study, it fills an important need.
We take pleasure today in sending you a copy of THE PSYCHOLOGY OF MILITARY
LEADERSHIP for your personal attention. We should be extremely gratified
if you would favor us with your opinion of the book.
Respectfully yours
Joy Joy MacLean Mac Seau
