WORKS PROGRESS ADMINISTRATION
STATE OF ARKANSAS
OLD POST OFFICE BUILDING
LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS
May 5, 1937.
Hon. Joe T. Robinson,
United States Senator,
Senate Office Bldg.,
Washington, D. C.
Dear Senator Robinson:
I want to request something a little unusual,
but deserving of recognition.
The Works Progress Administration is now
completing a beautiful building, known as "Museum of Fine Arts",
sponsored by the City of Little Rock and located in the old
City Park. The cost in round numbers is approximately $70,000.00.
The Fine Arts Club, a state-wide organization,
caused the City and the Works Progress Administration to become
interested and they will place the Art collection they now have
in the new building. Mrs. John P. Baird, who recently was
fatally injured when struck by an automobile, was President of
the Club, and her efforts were outstanding.
Here's my request. Fred W. Allsopp, Business
Manager of the Arkansas Gazette, made a personal contribution to
this project of $25,000.00. We required the sponsor to pay about
one-half of the total cost, due to expensive material and construc-
tion necessary for a building like this. At the close of the many
discussions we held trying to work out the initial plans, Mr.
Allsopp graciously agreed to pay this sum in order for the City
and State to obtain the building. It is very unusual for a private
citizen to make such a contribution and I believe it deserves more
recognition than the Works Progress Administration organization
alone can give.
Mr. Allsopp originally pledged us to secrecy
and does not now want publicity, although it has since become
publicly known. I would appreciate your writing him a letter
#2 Hon. Joe T. Robinson
commending him for this outstanding assistance, and I know
him well enough to be certain that he would prize it highly.
I also request that you consider the advisability of asking
the White House to give it official notice.
With kindest personal regards, I am
Yours very truly,
Floyd Sharp Floyd Sharp
FLOYD SHARP,
Administrator.
