MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT: In connection with Mr. Crump's # visit, the President desired to be reminded of Director Harold Smith's troubles because of Senator McKellar's opposition to appropriations for the support of the Bureau of the Budget itself. The bill has now gone to conference from the Senate with 25% cut below appropriations embodied in the bill as passed by the House. Crump to the Commercial Appeal, Aug. 29th, says that Mr. Crump is one of the Presi- dent's tried and true friends. The title of the newspaper article is "Crump Predicts FDR VS. Dewey - Praises Record of President. 11 - - -The President wrote Sen. McKellar, Sept. 14, 1943, expressing his thanks for his recent letter and enclosure. Says that Mr. Crumps interview was typical and that he got a chuckle out of it. - - Let. to the President from Sen. McKellar, 9/15/43, thanking the President for his letter of 9/14/43.
