Mr. Ed Rogers
Deputy Assistant to the President
The White House
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. Rogers:
Thank you for your letter. We are, of course,
disappointed, for we feel it would be extremely informative
and interesting for our audience to spend some time with
Governor Sununu and for him to take us on the "special
White House tour."
We realize how busy the Governor must be right now,
and as you suggested, we will try later in the year. In
fact, it might be even better then, linking the story to
Mr. Sununu's planned trip to Moscow later this year. That
would enable the Governor, should he agree, to contrast
the operations of the White House with his observations of
President Gorbachev's office. It would certainly be a
fascinating opportunity for our audience to share his unique
perspective on the world's two most powerful executive
offices.
I hope you will have an opportunity to consider this
proposal as plans for the Moscow trip move forward. I have
asked our producer, Martin Clancy, who is based in Washington,
to touch base with you at the end of the summer.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Barbara Walders

Dear Mr Rogers,
Our company is making a film about the Kremlin for ITV
in the U.K. One of the questions our film will address
is whether the image of the Kremlin is moving away
from that of a fortress at the heart of the "evil empire",
towards that of a political centre where democratic
processes are beginning to operate and political life is
becoming more open.
In view of this we very much wanted to film John Sununu's
visit to the Soviet Union, particularly any meetings he
would be holding inside the Kremlin walls. I believe
no dates have been fixed yet. Would it be possible to
let us know if we could film Mr Sununu in the Kremlin,
and what the dates of the visit are when they are confirmed?
We would then contact the Soviet authorities for their
approval and accreditation.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Melami Anothy

Mr Ed Rogers
Deputy Assistant to the President
and Executive Assistant to the Chief of Staff

Dear Mr Rogers,
I understand that the White House Chief of Staff, Mr
John Sununu, has accepted an invitation to travel to
Moscow to help Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev
organise his office.
I am writing as a producer from British television's
"The World This Week" programme to enquire about our
making a film of Mr Sununu's visit.
TELEVISION
"The World This Week" is Britain's only television
and Film
programme dedicated exclusively to international current

affairs. It is made by my company, TVF, for Channel
375 City Rd
Four, Britain's most innovative and respected network.
LONDUN
"The World This Week" enjoys a high reputation abroad
V
and recently won an award at the New York Film and
Television Festival. Within the UK, we know that the
ECIVINA
programme is videotaped and studied by Prime Minister

Thatcher's office, by the British Foreign Office, and by

various institutes for international studies.

Past guests on the programme include King Hussein of
Jordan, Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan,
Jacques Delors President of the European Commission,
President Chissano of Mozambique, Giscard 'Estaing of
France, President Kaunda of Zambia, and Prime Minister
Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore.
I understand that no dates have been made for Mr
Sununu's visit and that the length, exact purpose and
schedule have yet to be determined. I am writing to make
some initial suggestions about the kind of film we would
like to make.
The nature of the film will be dictated by the amount of
access we get, not only from the US side but from the

and
Soviets. We have good relations with Soviet officials -
Gennady Gerasimov among others has appeared on the show,
as has Arkady Maslennikov, who I dealt with personally.
Therefore if we secure co-operation from your office we
should have no difficulty with Moscow.
I foresee three scenarios:
1. Given full access - ie fly-on-the-wall attendance at
mootingo and brinfings between Mr Sununu and Soviet
officials - over a sufficient length of time, we would
be interested in making a one-off forty minute
documentary for Channel Four, extra to our regular
weekly show, which would bring out the political and
administrative problems of the Gorbachev presidency
through a detailed look at the individuals involved.
2. Given access to interview only a limited number of
the participants, chiefly Mr Sununu, and a member of the
Soviet side, we would make a 12-minute film to be
included in "The World This Week". The film would place
this episode of Superpower co-operation within the wider
picture of the administrative reforms being made by
President Gorbachev to the Soviet political system.
3. Granted only one interview by Mr Sununu after his
TELEVISION
trip to Moscow, we would edit this into a 7-minute piece

administrative reforms and the success or failure of the
