Dear Steven,
Many thanks for your letter of June 5th, 1990, in which you
request a visit to discuss possible job opportunities with the
Bush Administration. Shortly after hearing from you, I received
a note from Richard Williamson in support of your request.
In response, I would be glad to meet with you whenever you're
next in town. Please give me a call at (202) 456-6594 and we'll
set something up.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Mr. Rogers:
As you may recall, I initially wrote you a letter back in
early 1989 at the suggestion of Haley Barbour. At that time I
was considering pursuing a position in the Bush administration.
After some initial discussions with persons familiar with
Washington and the administration, I decided that it was in my
best interest to postpone that pursuit and begin my legal
career. I am presently an associate at Mayer, Brown & Platt in
Chicago and while I thoroughly enjoy the practice of law, I
maintain a strong interest in government service and continue to
be especially interested in serving in the Bush administration.
In that regard, I am writing to you with the hope that you might
be able to give me some suggestions or advice as to what
opportunities may be available. I have enclosed a copy of my
resume and would appreciate any advice or insight which you might
be able to provide.
I expect to be visiting Washington in the next few months
and would enjoy the opportunity to speak with you. Thank you for
your time and help.
Sincerely, Sken Shin

Dear Mr. Sluhan,
Thanks for your letter and back up materials of June 26, 1990.
As I mentioned in our telephone conversation, I will bring your
concerns to the attention of Joseph W. Hagin, II, Deputy
Assistant to the President for Appointments and Scheduling. For
your information, this project is not something that Governor
Sununu will be involved with personally; all consideration of the
President's participation will occur in other White House
offices. It is for this reason that I'm sending your information
to Mr. Hagin.
Many thanks for your continued interest. I wish you luck with
this endeavor.

Dear Pete,
Many thanks for your letter of June 19,
1990, in which you requested a
Presidential letter to be read at the
Living Flag presentation. Unfortunately,
I can't help you on this one. Although
it sounds like a lovely ceremony, there
are limits on what/who is eligible to
receive Presidential letters; sadly this
event falls outside the range.
I hope this finds you well and happy.
Please let me know when I can help.

ATTENTION: Mr. Ed Rogers
Executive Asst. to the Chief of Staff
Deputy Asst. to the President
Dear Ed,
Please do me a favor pertaining to my father-in-law,
Dr. Bill Rittenhouse, who is pastor of Nassau Bay Baptist
Church. The church is located about 500 yards from the
entrance to NASA in Houston, Texas.
The church choir will be performing their second annual
"Living Flag" presentation in the evening on June 30, July 1,
and July 2 outside on the church grounds. One of their guest
speakers will be a medal of honor winner. Several of the
astronauts, who are members of the church, will also be in
attendance.
The program will consist entirely of patriotic music
(see attached program). There will be fireworks, a slide
presentation with the music, and a lot of local news coverage.
The choir and audience will also be waving small American flags.
Many choirs perform a "Living Christmas Tree", but this
is the ony church choir that I am aware of that does a "Living
Flag." In this day of flag burning, it is refreshing to me
to see a program honoring our flag. I certainly hope the President
can get congressional support of his anti-flag burning amendment.
My father-in-law is a very patriotic person. He was an
Air Force Captain who was shot down in World War II, and was
a prisoner of war in Romania for eighteen months.
My family and I plan to attend this year's "Living Flag"
program. My wife, JoAnn, will be singing with the choir.

The reason I am writing to you is to see if you could
arrange a presidential letter of telegram, commending this
"Living Flag" program, to be sent to my father-in-law prior
to the program to be read to the audience during the program.
My father-in-law's office mailing address is as follows:

attend the "Living Flag" performance.

Dear Dr. Arnett,
On behalf of the Chief of Staff, many thanks for your recent
letter requesting permission to publish his remarks at the
National Academy of Engineering in Science and International
Security: Responding to a Changing World. The Governor would be
glad to contribute to your publication.
As you might expect, we get numerous publication requests. As
long as the piece clearly indicates that it comes from remarks
made by Governor Sununu and is not written specifically for
publication, we have no problem. Since becoming Chief of Staff,
Governor Sununu has not written anything for his own byline.
Should you have any questions, or need any further information,
please do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached at (202)

Once again, thanks for your inquiry, and good luck!

Dear Gov. Sununu,
The staff of the AAAS Program on Science, Arms Control, and
National Security was impressed by the comments entitled
"Engineers and Policy" you made at 25th Annual Meeting of the
National Academy of Engineering. We believe the debate over
national security policy and the proper role of scientists and
engineers in its formulation would benefit if the appropriate
parts of your remarks were more broadly distributed. With your
permission and that of the NAE, we would like to reproduce an
abridges version of "Engineers and Policy" in Science and
International Security: Responding to a Changing World, the 1990
AAAS Annual Book on Science, Arms Control and National Security.
If you agree that this is a good idea, our staff will edit
the remarks to fit the book's format and submit the revisions to
you for your approval. If you prefer, more extensive revisions
could be undertaken by you or your staff.
Your contribution would make the book a more complete
contribution to the reassessment of security as it is properly
defined and the role that science and technology play in
enhancing or threatening it. I have enclosed the current table
of contents. In addition, you should soon receive a copy of last
year's annual, New Technologies for Security and Arms Control:
Threats and Promise, for your information. I will call Linda
Casey next week to follow up this request.

Dear Ed,
I hope this letter finds you in good health and that the stress
of your position is not wearing you down. I am sure the long
hours are difficult, but you are doing something important for
your country, which is appreciated by all of us.
I serve on the Baccarat, Inc. Board of Directors. I am sure you
are familiar with Baccarat crystal, which I believe is the most
beautiful in the world. I have visited their plant and found it
a most amazing experience. Watching the craftsmen make crystal
as they did hundreds of years ago is a great experience.
I believe 1992 will mark the 200th anniversary of the
construction of the White House. I would like to propose that
Baccarat make some kind of an exclusive reproduction or rendering
on Baccarat crystal for this occasion. Mr. Francois-Hugues de
Montmorin, President of Baccarat in the United States, will come
to Washington and meet with whomever you can advise would be the
appropriate person. I would sincerely appreciate you arranging a
meeting between the appropriate White House representative and
Francois. By a copy of this letter to Francois, I am asking him
CO contact you reference his possible meeting.
Thank you in advance for the time and effort to help me with this
request. Please let me know if I can ever be of help to you.

Thank you very much for your last correspondence
announcing the opening of your new and additional activity in

looking forward to hearing more about it when we next have a

Since you were kind enough to tell me not to hesitate to
contact you on matters where I feel you can be of help, here I
am.
According to my information, 1992 will mark the 200th
anniversary of the construction of the White House in
Washington, D.C. I believe that Baccarat, Inc. should not
miss this celebration and obtain some kind of an exclusive for
certain reproductions, renderings, etc. on Baccarat crystal
and also on the Gien faience.
It is never too early to start turning wheels on such a
project and I need your help if you believe this is a valid

Would you please give it some thought and share your
ideas with me at your earliest convenience.

Dear Ed:
Please join Peg and me and some colleagues and friends to
watch the fireworks on the Fourth of July. Our office in the
recently restored Evening Star building has a big terrace with a
splendid view of the Washington skyline, including the Washington
Monument where most of the fireworks will be displayed. It
should be a great evening.
Please feel free to bring a guest and family (that is to
say, reasonably adult children and up). Parking will be provided
in the building (enter on 11th Street).
We plan to start about 7:00 p.m. with a buffet dinner about
8:00 and the fireworks at 9:00 p.m. Dress is casual.
Please let Laura Lennox (879-6871) know whether you can
attend, how many will be in your party and whether you'll need
parking.
I hope you can join us.

Dear Ed:
On June 5th, Steve Skinner wrote a letter to you expressing
his interest in joining the Administration. Like his father,
Sam, Steve would be an invaluable addition to your team. Steve
has done some work for me here at the law firm. He is very
bright and hardworking. Also, he is helping out both Jim Edgar's
and Lynn Martin's campaigns.
When he is next in Washington, I suggest that he try to get
together with you. I think it would be worth your time to visit
with him for a few minutes.
I was out for the President's dinner. It was smashing suc-
cess. I was especially impressed by the President's graciousness
in giving acknowledgment to President Reagan's contribution to
developments; but, at this point in time, it is George Bush who
deserves the credit for staying the course and providing such
great leadership.

Dear Mr. Teague,
Thanks so much for your letter of June 15, 1990, in which you
offer your knowledge and services toward setting up a possible
visit by the Chief of Staff to the Soviet Union.
At this point, however, the only facts we have surrounding this
trip are: 1) that the invitation has been extended and, 2) that
the Governor has accepted.
I appreciate your offer, but we haven't even reached the planning
stages, and when we do, I think we'll pretty much have all the
resources we need within the Federal government.

Re: Governor Sununu's Soviet Mission
Dear Mr. Rogers:
One of the "wrinkles" in pulling together Governor
Sununu's mission to the Soviet Union may be how to synthesize
the official briefings with the more practically focused
briefings on how one enhances their effectiveness, impact,
etc. in working with the Soviets. From my work in govern-
ment, including its foreign policy focused offices, I am con-
cerned about how to reduce risks and increase prospects for
success in this particularly high-profiled undertaking.
Those concerns range from reducing criticism from those
who are already critical of his role, views, etc. to avoiding
criticism from his allies for "helping the Kremlin become more
effective," to quote a comment I heard this morning.
There are some procedural ways to reduce the first risk,
the most important being to structure it as "a continuing dia-
logue," so that expectations are reduced as to the first (rather
than the only) set of meetings, as well as the second risk, the
most important being to maintain dialogue with those allies
throughout the process. There are other ways as well.
There are a good many persons who have worked closely
with the Soviets, but there are very few who have worked with
them flying unashamedly a Republican-based career. I have done
that for fifteen years now, first on USIA-sponsored exchanges,
then for for-profit and non-profit clients, and at levels which
have had me frequently in the Kremlin. With sincere apologies
for their self-serving nature, I am enclosing some background
materials which reflect that experience, including some news
Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease
Page 2
articles, standard speeches to non-profit and for-profit
organizations which reflect my views on working with the
Soviets, a brochure on the firm (page 20), etc. My grand-
father used to say that the highpoint of any career is a
self-written resume, and I am afraid these materials approach
that risk, but they may be helpful to you.
All of this adds up to this: If there is anyway in
which I can help you and others prepare for this mission,
please let me know. I will be in Poland the first week of
July, Costa Rica the second and the Soviet Union the third,
but I ought to be here for the next two years and available
through the switchboard anyplace! To ease that task, my

Dear Mr. Rogers,
Our magazine, Europa 1992, has been published in New Hampshire for the last
few years. it has been our honor to be supporters of Governor Sununu in what-
ever endeavor he has undertaken.
Our purpose is to inform American business people about the coming single
market in Western Europe and developments in the Eastern European countries.
As interest in Europe grows, we have been quite successful in attracting sub-
scribers from the business and public sectors.
Our July issue will be featuring an in-depth interview with Dr. Hans Decker of
Siemens Corporation of West Germany. We would like to provide an interview
with Governor Sununu on the Administrations new point towards the "New Europe
including the single market and Eastern Europe.
We will be attending the 1990 IBC Banquet in Boston on Thursday, June 21, 1990
at the Westin Hotel. Governor Sununu will be the featured speaker discussing
the views of the Bush Administration on Western and Eastern Europe. We would
like to request a brief interview with the Governor either before or after his
presentation. Since we are attempting to establish our business on a national
scale, we would be most appreciative of any consideration you could give us on
this request.
I Look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience. Thank you.

Dear Ed,
It's too bad the meeting between Governor Sununu and Mr. Alain Juppe
couldn't go through, but everybody understood that the Governor had a hard day
with the debate on budgetary issues.
This time I am coming again with a request that I hope can be
satisfied: Mr. Philippe Villin, Publisher of the daily "Le Figaro" and Mr.
Franz-Olivier Giesbert, Editor, will be in town on July 17 and 18. Given the
influence of this newspaper, which disputes with "Le Monde" the first place in
the national press (roughly speaking, "Le Monde" expresses liberal views,
whereas "Le Figaro" is regarded as a rather conservative paper), I think
meeting Mr. Villin and Mr. Giesbert would be of interest to the Chief of Staff.
I thank you again for your help.

Dear Mr. Sununu:
Fox/WTTG TV would like to extend an invitation to you to
appear on our new morning news program. "Fox Morning
News" will premiere on June 25th, airing weekdays from
6:30am to 9:00am. The program will have a harder
journalistic edge and more in-depth approach than the
national morning shows. "Fox Morning News" is intended,
in part, to appeal to Washington's leaders and news
makers. The program will offer Washingtonians the
sophistication and scope of knowledge they need to start
their day.
During the first two weeks, June 25th through July 6th, we
will focus on Washington's most important decision makers.
A live appearance by you would be an essential part of
that agenda. The discussion could be wide-ranging, from
specific policy issues to a description of a typical day
in the life of the Chief of Staff. The idea is not just
to talk about specific controversial issues, but to give
our viewers an opportunity to get to know you.
We will be happy to schedule an appearance for any morning
between June 25th and July 6th. Any location that is
convenient for you is convenient for us.
We look forward to working with you. Please feel free to
call Steve Borden at 895-3130 or editorial producer Chip

Pete Wilson win the governorship in November. When your travel
schedule permits, we would like to feature you as the principal
speaker at one or more fundraising events in California.
As I am sure you know, Pete is in an excellent position to be
elected Governor and continue a Republican legacy in California to
insure a strong future for the Republican Party nationwide. The
Republican Party here needs to raise substantial funds in the
months ahead to be able to help Senator Wilson and the other
Republicans on the November ballot.
Your willingness when in California to support our efforts
would greatly assist us in achieving our goals. I would be most
pleased to speak with you or a member of your staff regarding your
plans to visit California and how you can be of help to us. We
would like to contact your office in the next few weeks.
Yours very truly,
Kul Samilia
