Dear Dr. and Mrs. Davis:
On behalf of the Chief of Staff, thank you for your letter
concerning H.R. 2712.
Following the tragic events in Tiananmen Square in June,
President Bush took action to ensure that no nationals from the
People's Republic of China would be deported against their will.
On November 30, the President took additional action to extend
and broaden that protection. Since President Bush's directive
accomplished the objectives of H.R. 2712 administratively, it
was not necessary for this bill to become law.
President Bush and Governor Sununu appreciate your views on this
issue. In light of your interest, I am enclosing material I hope
you will find informative.

Dear Mr. Davison:
Thank you for your recent message regarding the firearms issue.
As you are aware, President Bush and the American people
are gravely concerned about the availability of foreign-made
weapons used by criminals to commit devastatingly violent acts
throughout our communities. This is an intolerable situation
and will not be allowed to continue.
On May 15, the President announced a comprehensive and
commonsense program to effectively combat crime, with strong
proposals to limit the access to illicit weapons. At the
same time, the program will not infringe upon the rights of
law-abiding citizens to own and use firearms. In light of
your interest, I am enclosing for you a fact sheet which
outlines the President's initiative in this area.
Thank you for taking the time to write.

Dear Ms. De Pew:
On behalf of the Chief of Staff, thank you for your
letter concerning appropriations legislation for the
District of Columbia, which permits the use of funds
to pay for abortions.
The House of Representatives and the Senate have passed
the District of Columbia appropriations bill for Fiscal
Year 1990, which permits Federal funding for abortions
under circumstances where the life of the mother is not
endangered. A final version of the bill is being pre-
pared by House-Senate conferees. President Bush has
announced his intention to veto the appropriation bill
if it is presented to him in its current form.
The President does not believe that appropriated funds
should be used to pay for abortions other than in those
cases where the life of the mother would be endangered
if the fetus were carried to term.

Dear Mr. Sununu:
The purpose of this letter is to urge you to favorably consider the nomination of Judge Paul Pressler of
Houston, Texas, for the Federal Ethics post. Judge Pressler is a friend of long standing whose greatest
problem is his extraordinary personal courage coupled with a deep and abiding love for his church and the
Southern Baptist Convention. His willingness to speak out for his convictions and to stand firm for basic
conservative beliefs and high moral principles has put him at odds with a vocal and influential element within
the Convention. This element, largely composed of academicians and denominational bureaucrats, had been
increasingly imposing its agenda of social programs and liberal theology within the programs of Southern
Baptist institutions. Through the leadership of Judge Pressfer and other concerned Southern Baptists the
majority in the Southern Baptist Convention has rejected their liberal agenda and returned the Convention to
leadership committed to basic Bible centered beliefs. Needless to say those with conflicting views are bitter
and vindictive toward this sincere and committed Christian man.
There is no more qualified man for the Federal Ethics post than Judge Paul Pressler.
With best regards, we are
Sincerely yours,
Dan Mary P. and Mary Ann am Duff Duff Na
