Dear Mrs. Walker,
What a great treat it was hearing from you.
I will certainly be on the lookout for General
Bill Moore, and I'm hoping that we can have some
tennis. I share your high admiration for him
and I will try to be helpful to him as he looks
to the future.
Incidentally, I saw Admiral Gayler here the
other day and your ears should have been burning.
Both of us talked of you with great enthusiasm
and happiness.
There is a chance I may come to Hawaii
before too long and if so I will take you up
on the offer of a tennis game.
Warmest personal regards,
Sincerely,

Dear Ann,
Great hearing from you. One of the happy things about
being back in Washington is that I run into our old gang
from time to time. Don Rhodes lived in our house when we
were in China, and I see him every Sunday for lunch - he
is going great. Rose Zamaria's mother died, which broke
her up, Mary Matthews is married, and life goes on and on
and on.
I love my new job. I was in San Francisco the other
day, indeed I was at One Bush Street. Had I only known
that you were there, I would have stuck my head in. I
was at White Weld.
Thanks for writing. I do look forward to meeting
Jeffrey.
Sincerely,

We
your many west coast

have had you in our
thoughts SO many times since your recent appointment but this morning's
Wall Street Journal's cartoon prompted me to write and say we're most
happy the agency is in such capable hands and wish you. the best of luck.
You have certainly had a wide range of experiences since those days in
Longworth HOB and no doubt they have all served to prepare you for this
task. Follow your utterings in the newspapers, most of which give you a
pretty fair shake.
My husband and I bought our first home here in San Francisco SO I guess
I am becoming a real native after 7 years. I am still with Crown-doing
legislative research--and liking it very much. If you and Barbara are
ever out this way, please give us a call. I have told Jeff SO much about
my hill days and he, too, is anxious to meet you.
Best of luck.

Dear Jerry,
It was good seeing you at Maine. I tried to get ahold
of you again, but you must have taken off early. I did not get
back for near as much time as I had hoped.
I checked with Henry Kissinger's office and told them of
my interest in getting the pictures that you had requested for
your parents. The office replied that he was "800 photos behind"
but (now for the good news) he hopes to catch up. Why don't you
send me what your requirements are and let's start all over. I
think I can be helpful. It was great seeing you and Jane and the
kids. All too brief. Thanks for the great dinner. Sorry we
didn't get a boat ride together.

recipes are Russell Baker, Senator Stevens,

Dear Mr. Bush:
Mr. Cromwell had been asking me for six months to invite
you as speaker for our conference. My letter to you was
only a "cover letter" for his invitation.
As is natural for me, I couldn't help being a smart a
with it. Asking a personal favor of a friend or a loved

affection for you has never been spelled out. Perhaps
now, during this Holiday Season, it is a good time to do
SO. It has nothing whatsoever to do with your status.
One day, several years ago when you were a Congressman,
we (Sonny and me) came to you in Houston with our dream.
At that time, we had almost given up. We had tried every
way we knew how to establish a home for ex-offenders.
You took the time to listen to us and you heard us. You
helped us. YOU BELIEVED IN US.
Your letter to Mr. Fred Melchoir started New Directions
Club, Inc. and your continued interest sustained US.
The program is now the best in Texas. One you can be
proud to have been a part of.

During the last campaign for Congress, we met you and
traveled with you in Dallas and had a chance to get to
see what kind of man you were. Sonny, whose capacity for
love was greater than mine, loved you above all others
and kept his image of you always before him. An image of
compassion, ethics, and fairness. In times of stress he'd
say, "What would George Bush do?", and he would act ac-
cordingly.
I recall yelling many times - Bush ain't no gosh darn
saint and he sure as hell ain't working with ex-offenders.
But for Sonny, you worked. He died a happy and fulfilled
man.
Had it not been for Sonny, you, New Directions, and many
others like you, I would not be sitting here now in this
big office with this very trying but meaningful job.
So you see George Bush, that thirty minutes in your office
in Houston started a whole new life for me. A life that
has opened doors unexpectedly in some very strange places
that would have been forever closed.
Should you think me a sentimental old woman, I am. I
personally owe you a debt that can never be paid, MY LIFE
AS IT IS NOW. The only way I know to try to pay that debt
is through loving you and sincerely caring about your welfare.
I shall never impose on your friendship.

We bought the old Post Office Building in Huntsville for
our staff. Recently, we renamed it the Senator William T.

Got my name on a public building, imagine that!
Hope you take a little time to be happy and enjoy.

Dear Jann,
Thanks so much for your note and the limited
edition copy of Rolling Stone. It was a pleasure
having Mr. Avedon out here at CIA. I don't know
if he was as scared to come out here as I was
in pesing for the great Avedon, but he sure has
a neat way of putting his victims at ease and I
enjoyed our short time together. I am really
looking forward to having a signed copy of the

Dear George:
Just a note to say how much I enjoyed your speech at the Texas
Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Convention. Every time you give that
CIA peptalk (I still recall the Texas State Society function and
the Marine drum and bugle corps), I honestly want to run out and
enlist! With morale such a critical factor these days, I sincerely
believe the CIA could not be in better hands than yours. Keep up
the good work.
You probably aren't aware of what I'm doing in Houston these days,

Dear Mr. White:
We have reviewed your application under Announcement 408, Senior Level Positions. Based on a pre-
liminary review of your qualifications, you will receive consideration at the grade(s) shown above.
This is not an offer of employment- it is a record that your name has been placed on our Senior Level
referral list.
Limited Job Opportunities The Senior Level examining program is the source of recruit-
ment from outside the Federal Government for administrative, management, and some service type occupa-
tions at grades GS-13, GS-14, and GS-15. Relatively few jobs are filled through this announcement since
most vacancies at these levels are filled from within the Federal service by reassignment, transfer, or
promotion. Therefore, job opportunities through Senior Level are very limited.
How Jobs Are Filled
Applications are kept in a central resource file. When an
Photocopy from George Bush Presidential Library
agency requests names to be considered in filling a job, we screen the file for applications showing skills
and backgrounds that match the requirements of the job. These applications are evaluated to identify the
best qualified candidates. Then, the names of the top-ranking candidates are referred for consideration.
For some positions, consideration may be limited to one or more states or a clearly defined administra-
tive area of the agency. The applications of candidates not selected are put back into the system for
consideration as other opportunities arise.
Length of Consideration You will receive consideration for a period of 12 months
from the date of this letter. You may extend your period of consideration by submitting up-to-date informa-
tion about your qualifications after 10 months. In any communication, please identify your application by
furnishing the information which appears at the upper right corner of this letter.
Thank you for your interest in the Federal Career Service.

Mr. George Bush, Director

Washington, D. C. 20505
Dear George:
When you were here on your visit and spoke to the
YMCA dinner, I couldn't help but notice the way
Barbara looked at you once during the evening. In
cleaning out my desk the other day, I found this
picture of you and Barbara. I took it in Lubbock,
Texas in 1970 during your campaign. Its the same
look George, so congratulations. Thought you might
enjoy it.
We can tell that your working hard and doing a good
job with the CIA by the lack of headlines in all of
the papers. It has tobe a tough job George, but you
Photocopy from George Bush Presidential Library
can do it.
Its a shame that your hands are tied now in the national
politics since many of us feel that you could do another
great for the country this Fall. It looks like any one's
ball game now, but the convention will give some an-
swers soon. George, you would be surprised at how
many GEORGE BUSH bumber stickers and signs are still
in the attics of many Texas voters.
Betty Jo and I hope that you and Barbara are enjoy-
ing your grand children as much as we do.
Sincerely,
John Whymon

Dear George:
It was a pleasure having lunch with you last Friday, and seeing
you at the Touchdown Club banquet which, unfortunately, was too
long.
The President's State of the Union message was excellent and his
delivery strong. I believe it will be a positive base for his
campaign. I would like to do what I can to support his efforts.
If those managing the campaign believe that I can be of service,
I trust they will contact me.
The country and particularly the CIA will be most fortunate to
have you directing the agency at this critical point in time. I am

confident your confirmation proceedings will go smoothly and that
you will do a magnificent job.
With kindest personal regards.

Dear Mr. Williams,
Thanks for your letter of December 17th. I will look
over the information you sent me with keen interest.
I did tell Jim Hewgley that I'm going to be in Hobe
Sound over Christmas, and I look forward to seeing Charles
at that time. We know each other.
I don't have any definitive plans, but I do know that
we will be going back to Houston sometime around the middle
of February. In fact, we just bought a house there. I will
talk to Charles and then you and I can get together. I
can't tell you how flattered and pleased I am at your possible
interest in me. Let's chat and see if it makes sense.
Yours very truly,

Dear Mr. Bush:
I was very pleased to learn from Jim Hewgley that he had discussed
with you the possibility of joining our Board of Directors upon your
retirement from your present responsibilities and that you expressed an
interest in considering the matter.
I am certain that you will have lots of questions and I would be
very pleased to visit with you at a time and place that is convenient
so that we can discuss the matter in greater detail. Prior to doing
this, I think it would be helpful for you to have the enclosed infor-
mation to review; therefore, I am enclosing our 1975 Annual Report,
this year's editions of "The Williams World," which includes our
Quarterly Reports, and the latest issue of "people" which is an internal
publication featuring our new headquarters building into which we are
about to start moving.
After a dozen years of earnings growth, 1976 results indicate a
pause along with much of the rest of the economy, and we anticipate
that our earnings will be off substantially this year. Having stream-
lined the company and focused primarily on the agri-chemicals and energy
sectors, we believe that we are very well positioned for the future and
we are confident that the present dip in earnings is only a temporary

pause in a long-range trend of earnings growth.
Also, I understand from Jim Hewgley that you will be in Hobe Sound
during the holidays. Charles Williams, our former chairman and present
director and large shareholder, also has a home at Hobe Sound and would
be delighted to visit with you and answer any questions you may have
prior to our having the opportunity to get together. I have asked him
to make himself available to you.
I look forward to hearing from you and will be glad to send you any
additional information that may be of interest.
With very best regards for a Happy Holiday.

Frank Shakespeare sent me a copy of your editorial,
"Effective Intelligence." I just want you to know that
I'm deeply grateful for that. This Agency deserves the
support of the American people. We will take those steps

the thing that impressed me about your editorial 1s, it
captured the basic need for a strong intelligence capa-

Dear Lou,
I received a letter from a former New York
detective named James J. Graham. When I was
Ambassador to the UN, he dismantled a bomb that
was placed in the Soviet Trade Mission, and later
on I awarded him a Certificate of Merit. He wrote
me requesting an 8x10 autographed color picture
of me and also requested the same thing of you.
He served 11 years in the U. S. Marine Corps
and thinks that he served on recruiting duty with
you in New York City in 1949. In any event, will
you please send a signed picture to your sincere
admirer, James J. Graham, Box 121 Star Route #1,
Hawley, Pennsylvania 18428. This man helped us
in a troubled time, and I'd like to try to help
him with his modest request.
