there at 1 Bark Ave. It was bought
in December or November I believe
by P.S. Bush, Grove Lane, Greenwich
Connecticut.
The blanket worked per-
fectly for one or two months and
then went completely out. The control
box still lights up, but the blanket
remains cold.

Dear Mr. and Mrs Bush;
Bill has relayed to me the good news about your coming to join us on
the College Board. During the course of negotiations I developed a
serious case of telephone ear talking to Dean Carroll, but he is
finally completely convinced that your participation in our program
is all right. We have agreed not to refer to your baseball exploits
in order that theirC-may be no question of possible harm to your
amateur standing in athletics. We have made reservations for you
at the Waldorf - Astoria starting Sunday February 8th. I would ap-
preciate it if you would let me know if young George will be with
you SO we can make proper arrangements for him too. I will be in
contact with you that night at the Waldorf to straighten out any
last minute details.
Keep a record of any expenses you incur getting down to New York
such as train, taxi and meals and we will reimburse you. Your week
at the Waldorf will naturally be paid for by the company as will
your living expenses while you are here.
The program starts Monday morning February 9th at our office and
you will have a chance to meet the other members of the College
Board. This year we have men from University of North Carolina
and Michagan (Bob Chappuis), and Girls from Smith, Bennington,
Rollins, Bates, Colorade, North Western, Stanford, Tulane, and
Texas. We will do advertising photography of you all for our
fall program which appears in such magazines as Life, Vogue, Mad-
emoiselle, etcetera. You will really have a lot of fun. If it
becomes necessary for you to attend any particular classes that
week, I am sure we can make arrangements. If you have any thoughts
on this matter right now I would appreciate hearing from you. The
weeks activities will end up Friday February 13thwith 8 fashion
show and party at the Waldorf. The Friday night party will be
black tie for the men and evening dress for the women, and we would

Dear Poppy:
Let me tell you how sorry I was not to have seen more of you
and Barbara when you were down here. I am afraid they kept you running
much too fast for me. However, I want to tell you that you both made
everybody very happy down here with the job that you did and everyone
with whom you came in contact has had nothing but the best to say
for you in regard to competence and pleasantness.
In addition, as I mentioned to Barbara one day, Vernon Cowper
was so impressed with you that he wants to consider you for an
opening he has in his department. I believe he has written you about
this. I can only say that I think it would be a wonderful opportunity
for you in every respect. In regards to this, it has always been a
policy of Mr. Ruhm's to know a prospective employee for a job such as
this personally. That not only reflects on the importance of the job
but also on the attitude of Mr. Ruhm towards his personnel, which is
the finest attitude I have ever heard of.
I immediately thought that it would be a good idea if perhaps
you and Barbara could stop in at Southport for a toddy with us some
Sunday afternoon in the near future. That would give us a chance to
see a bit of you and also you would be able to meet Mr. Ruhm at that
time. If Sunday the 21st would be convenient for you, I think it
would be best for us, but you let me know how you stand on that as
Isobel and I are thorough homebodies on the weekends and any Sunday
would be convenient.
As a further note, everybody down here has been thanking
me for getting you to come down here. I wish I could feel more re-
sponsible in that direction, but it was good to see you then and I
shall hope to see you soon. My best to Barbara and young George.

Dear Poppy:
As I anticipated, an opening has developed in our Advertising Department, and
I would like to offer you the job. I have discussed this with Mr. Ruhm, the
president of the company, and he feels delighted that I have someone in mind
capable of handling this position.
Naturally, I don't know what sort of work you would prefer to get into follow-
ing your graduation but I can assure you that what we have in mind would be
interesting, stimulating and certainly challenging. Fortunately I will have
ample time to train you thoroughly and this is a job I would like to under-
take myself rather than putting you under one of the other fellows in the Adver-
tising Department. We contemplate a very big new program for which Bates will
make available ready made apparel for its wholesale distributors. These clothes
will be made up for us on contract. To support this program we will have a
separate advertising appropriation which should expand our budget considerably.
It would be our plan to train and develop you for work on this new program.
Louis Laun has been given a tremendous promotion, but unfortunately for me, he
is being sent to Maine and will no longer be available to me here. This means
that I will take over all responsibility for our motion picture section so you
would be given considerable duties in connection with this, if of course your
interests and capabilities shape up in that direction.
It occurs to me that you would like to discuss this job in considerable detail.
We wont be able to start you out at a very sumptuous rate of pay, We can dis-
cuss this when we get together. We can offer you a great opportunity to show
what you can do. I could very conveniently stop off in New Haven after one of
my trips to Boston. Perhaps you had better drop me a note and let me know
what schedule of baseball activities you have during March. Naturally, I would
like to get this determined fairly quickly.
I am very anxious to have you and Barbara meet Mr. Ruhm. Bill Sagar has
suggested that you come down to Southport some Sunday for this purpose. I am
sure he will drop you a note in this regards.
We were delighted to have you and Barbara as part of our College Board. I
sincerely hope that you will regard the offer which I am making seriously.

Have asked Allen Koenig, whom you will remember from our College
Board, to see that you meet a few friends of mine who are connected
with the Department of Athletics at North Carolina. Had hoped that
my close friend, Billy Carmichael, who is Controller of the Univer-
sity would be in town during your stay but understand from his
brother that he will be here in New York instead.
Have also asked my brand new brother-in-law, Allen Nelms, who is
Assistant Director of Athletics at North Carolina State to look you
up. Imagine you will be under pretty regimented schedule but poss-
ibly there might be time for some little outside social activity.
You will find Chapel Hill a delightful place, although your team
will probably be soundly trounced.
Hope you have a fine trip and that Barbara enjoys her stay in North
South

Have forgotten when you plan to be in Chapel Hill during your spring
