The President
The White House
Washington, DC 20500
Dear Corge
We are back from Maine, a bit reluctantly because
it's so beautiful up there this time of year. But it's
good to be home and catch up with friends and activities.
The Coleman Campaign doesn't look good to me. We
are swamped by fundraisers, but Coleman himself doesn't
make good friends and inspire the kind of personal commit-
ment it takes to carry an election. My view: close but
not good enough. But I was very wrong about the primary,
so I hope I am wrong again here.
Photocopy from George Bush Presidential Library
Your Virginia friends, many of whom have been
supporters of yours since I recruited them for your quali-
fying campaign nine years ago, have been wonderfully
supportive of you and are doing a lot to help the Repub-
lican cause in this instance. Lots of people have gotten
on the wagon since those early days, but I feel pretty
sentimental about the gang that signed up at the very
beginning.
Our friend Loncar (now Foreign Minister of Yugoslavia)
called yesterday and we had a long talk. He is most
complimentary about you, particularly your understanding
and sympathy for the Eastern European situation. His
country is having a very hard time, both with its economy
and debts, and with the nationalistic divisions. On top
of these, they are having the same problem Poland has of
replacing a managed economy with a free economy without
the lid blowing off. Loncar is in the midst of the action.
I think he is a fine man and a good friend and that his
success is of great importance to us.
The President
Page 2 - October 4, 1989
We were in England on James River Corporation business
during the Ryder Cup matches and got to see quite a lot of
it on TV. It was a great show. I am sure that with that
fancy new set of clubs they gave you, you would not have
come a cropper on the 18th as did at least three of our
gang.
Give our love to Bar. Stay in touch.
As As ever
