POOL REPORT # 3 (PART ONE)
FLAPS DOWN POWER WALK ON THE BEACH WITH THE PRESIDENT
KENNEBUNKPORT, MAINE
FEBRUARY 16, 1991
Bush walked at an excruciatingly brisk pace for 64 minutes along
the beach at Goose Rocks, accompanied by Bob Gates who kept up
nicely - frisky Ranger and an exhausted press corps.
The news is slender. Tons of color.
Bush was, literally, interviewed on the run:
At the very end, on an ice patch, there was this exchange:
Question: PARAPHRASE concerned that Gorby exceeding UN
resolutions???
A: "Put it this way, the United Nations position is solid and
there's no giving on that at all!"
Q: Worried about danger of Sov freelance diplomacy?
A: "They're playing a constructive role and that's it."
Q: You got fresh assurances of that?
A: "Yeah, very fresh. "?
Q: You call Gorby?
A: "Haven't talked to him in the last couple weeks."
During the walk, Bush spoke with good-natured derision about
those who predicted, wrongly, that oil prices would skyrocket.
And, he said, he detected that maybe the markets are concluding
that "the recession is a little less worrisome...'
Now for the color:
In short, Bush brushed off all serious questions, holding up a
mittened hand. Wouldn't answer serious queries about Gorbachev
letter mentioned in NY Times story today.
But, he talked at length on a wide variety subjects including but
not limited to: Bar Bush becoming a computer whiz; flight
training in the 1940s in Minnesota (cold!); exercise; dog-people
relations and the concept of walking press conferences.
He was in high-spirits, frequently extolling the virtues of brisk
walking.
His outfit was notable. A fur-lined flap hat he said he'd had
for 20 years, got in China. Rèd 49ers parka emblazoned "George
Bush" on right chest; L.L. Bean-style wool plaid pants very fuzzy
in a dark shade with red and green stripes (subtler than that
sounds); leather lowcut laced walking shoes and leather mittens
that appeared to be hunting accoutrements since they left his
trigger finger free. He often wiped his runny nose with a blue
cowboy-type bandanna.
Bush said that while Truman did walking press conferences, "We
don't do that."
Then he did it for over an hour.
Early on he said, "Where's Mr. Gates. We defer all questions to
him." Replied Gates, "No comment and you can quote me."

Bush said he had just talked to Mitterrand "the president
the republic" and would offer no details.
Also talked Ozal "a staunch member of this coalition
The party of press, security and prez. passed 3 or 4 dogs and
about a dozen Maine residents out for a walk. He stopped to shake
hands with a baby discuss with Pat Slattery the good weather and
comment onthis fire dog, a 4-month-old Dalmatian named Plato;
signed a snapshot for a woman, naccompanied by her young son, who
had a picture of Bush and her family taken last summer. She
offered lots support of Bush on Gulf. He thanked her
Asked why Quayle got to go to Fla while Bush came up to the icy
north, Bush declared, "This is a weekend not calling this a
vacation but this summer nothing will intervene, nothing (on his
vacation) Yousall will be grateful
Bush contended that we did this walk at a 13-minute/mile pace and
that it was the equivalent of a 30 minute Jog.
"How come you all didn't cover Marlin on the slopes. That would
have been a good item, almost an incredible item," he said
blowing the cover on his press secretary's secret Saturday ski
trip.
Bush says hes not running as much as he would like to but uses
the Stairmaster a lot.
As Ranger passed a dog, Bush declared to the dog owner, "That's
Ranger, he doesn't like to fight."
This "interview" is interrupted by Bush repeatedly calling his
dog, "Here Ranger Hya. Hyup." Ranger goes into the ocean,
completely submerges as he chases a duck into the frigid waters.
Bush laughed when asked if he would play golf, take out the boat.
No, he said. But, he was going to visit his boat that is being
stored inside somewhere.
Spoke of Truman era : "Totally different. Goes for a morning
walk with a handful of people. No security to speak of."
Would you prefer it like that? "I'm happy with my lot in life."
Feel like a prisoner? "No." "
With his pace slowing only slightly as this walk went on and
on into the frigid wind, Bush waxed reflective, spoke of flight
training in an open airplane in the early 1940s in M Minnesota.
Though, he said, his face was covered with a chamois shield,
"Your face would, literally, get frozen.
As the "walk" progressed, Bush got more playful, beginning once
sentence, "I'm worried about Barbara She's becoming a computer
whiz." It turns out, he said, that the computer Thesaurus he
gave her for Valentine's Day was redundant. "She already had two
of them."

Speaking about man's relationship with his dog, Bush took note of
the fact that Ranger ran ahead, then came back, checking on his
"dad" and didn' want to stray too far.
"Here's an interesting sociological observation, Ellen. The fact
that Ranger comes back for reassurance It's a parental kind of
a thing. He knows I' m his dad. He likes to go off, but return.
Got that?
There were repeated efforts to get Bush to talk about the
Gorbachev letter. He wouldn but, referring to hid dog-dad
lecture, he underscored his unwillingness to talk substance by
joking, "Actually, there' a lot of explanation of the
Gorbachev letter in that
"I was trying to tell you something," he joked, again referring
to the dog sociology lecture.
"When I call Ranger and he turned and came running there's an
interpretation in there. Nuance," said Bush, loving the joke.

WALKER'S POINT REPORT
February 16, 1991
The President was in his office at Walker's Point at 8:00 a.m.
this morning, and at 8:30 he received his national security
briefing from Deputy National Security Adviser Bob Gates. At
approximately 10:30 the President departed for a "power walk,"
details of which you will be receiving shortly in a pool report.
No outside guests or visitors are scheduled to join the President
and Mrs. Bush at Walker's Point today. We have no information on
any other excursions planned for today. We expect the President
and Mrs. Bush will have dinner at home.
Over the past several days, the President has called a number of
world leaders to discuss the situation in the Gulf and the
progress being made in Desert Storm. Among those called were:
King Hassan of Morocco; Prime Minister Major of the United
Kingdom; Sultan Qaboos of Oman; President Zayid of the United
Arab Emirates; Sheikh Jaber, the Amir of Kuwait; President Ozal
of Turkey; and President Mitterrand of France. The President
remains convinced that the international coalition is steadfast
in its resolve to see the United Nations Security Council
resolutions fully implemented.

POOL REPORT # 4
CHURCH
KENNEBUNKPORT, MAINE
FEBRUARY 17, 1991
The President and Mrs. Bush attended 9:00 a.m. services at the
First Congregational Church of Kennebunkport. Uneventful trip
from Walker's Point. Mrs. Bush wearing red coat and red dress,
leaning on her cane. President in a dark suit and a dark
windbreaker over it.
The church was packed. They were greeted by the Minister, the
Reverend Patricia Adam; chatted with people at the door. The
President and Mrs. Bush were seated in the second pew from the
front at the end of the row.
The first hymn sung was "The Church's One Foundation" in which
the third verse refers to "mid toil and turbulation and tumult of
a war, she waits the consummation of peace forever."
The Reverend Adam offered a special welcome to the "Washington
branch of the family." Everything was normal for about the first
10 minutes. They reported on a church building fund and then the
Reverend Adam asked people to voice their prayers and concerns
for those who were sick and in need of help. At that point a
tall, gray-haired man, later identified as John Schuchardt, stood
up and said, "I have a concern. Think of the 18 million people
of Iraq, half are children under the age of 15. There are
children just like the children sitting here. We must think of
what it means to be bombed by more than 2,000 planes everyday.
The spirit of the Lord is upon me. I will speak for the poor and
those who are suffering the terror never before experienced by
any country or any people, of being bombed in the day, bombed in
the night. Think of people in hospital. Think of grandfathers.
Think of those who died of heart attacks
from this terror. Think
of those who have miscarriages.
At this point voices began to rise among the other people in the
congregation and there were cries of "Enough."
As he went on talking, the entire congregation stood up and
spontaneously began to sing "God Bless America" -- just the first
verse. The congregation then sat down and President Bush had sat
stony-faced while the man was speaking. the President glanced
back towards the man who was on the other side of the church from
where the Bushes were sitting but the President's face at this
point was expressionless.
The Minister addressed Schuchardt saying, "I am glad you spoke."
Whereupon he took off again. He said, "I am guided by the
spirit. This is time for repentance. This is a time to admit
mistakes. We are called to be peacemakers. This is a vicious,
immoral attack."
At this point other members of the congregation began shouting at
him saying, "This is not a political forum this is a church of
God
get out of here."
He responded saying, "I speak in the name of God to repent in the
season of repentance in the season of lent. Repent and stop this
massacre."
At this point a uniformed local policeman approached the pew
where Schuchardt was sitting and said as far as I could hear,
"Will you sit down or will I show you to the door." (This is
paraphrasing.) The Minister said, "Let us get on with our
service."

Schuchardt said, "I will continue to pray with you." The
Minister said, "Quietly then." Schuchardt said, "Minister you
asked for concern, and I have deep concern." The members of the
congregation then chorused, "Let us get on with our service."
Schuchardt again began to speak saying, "There are nine million
children in Iraq who are being bombed and massacred on this
Sabbath. On the Sabbath (paraphrasing) we are supposed to do
good to save life not to kill."
At this point a voice could be heard saying, "Here John, control
yourself." The Secret Service didn't really participate much
standing in the background and letting the local police handle
it. A local policeman moved to the pew and sat down next to
Schuchardt's wife. At this point you had Schuchardt sitting
against the wall with his wife next to him and the policeman next
to his wife. The policeman was in effect blocking any possible
effort by Schuchardt to get out of the pew.
They then went back to the service and another member of the
congregation asked for a prayer for someone's mother who had had
three toes removed.
They then sang the hymn "God is Our Refuge and Our Strength."
The Reverend Adam then delivered her sermon entitled,
"Listening."
She spoke of God's promise not to give up on the world. (This is
all paraphrasing.) The part of her sermon was the importance of
listening to other people. She emphasized how difficult it was
for anyone to change their mind, especially if their deepest
convictions were involved. "We have to
listen to those with whom
we disagree. It is essential to listen
to those people because
they too may be right," she said. She urged the congregation to
"listen for Lent."
The congregation then sang, "Before the Cross Our Lives Are
Judged." In the meantime, Schuchardt was quiet. The pastor gave
her final prayer, asking, "Be with all those who seek solution
for conflict. We pray for the men and women serving in the
Middle East. For those whose cities and towns who have become
battlefields. For children and old people. We pray for guidance
for our leaders. Grant them integrity and the wisdom to know
which path is closest to your will. We pray for our President
and those who work with him. Grant them strength for their
responsibilities and the wisdom to seek every good citizen."
She then announced that the congregation would sing "The Lord's
Prayer." At that point Mr. Schuchardt stood up again saying,
"Before we sing, I have a word." At that point the police moved
in. As far as we could see they seemed to be trying to ease him
out of his seat and he abruptly sank to
the floor apparently
going limp as if in passive resistance.
As soon as the
congregation finished singing the Lord's Prayer, Mr. Schuchardt
was removed by the police, who moved him bodily toward the door
of the church. As he went out the door his heels were still on
the ground but his legs were spread out and he was basically
being dragged out. He went on talking as he was being removed.
He said, "I have a word this morning. I am the voice for the
voiceless." (Paraphrasing) It was difficult to hear and he was
now shouting for the first time and his words were disturbed by
the fact that he was being moved by the police at the time. He
made a reference to those who were being bombed by white
phosphorous. As he disappeared out the door, he shouted, "Stop
the bombing. Stop the massacre in the name of God."
The pastor then apologized, "For what happened to our guests
today and for what happened to us." She added, "I urge you to
remember what I said. You need to listen to everybody."

Outside, Schuchardt's wife told us that her husband was a lawyer
from Longview, Massachusetts. She said, "He is currently
devoting his life to this issue (presumably meaning the war in
Iraq) and he came to Kennebunkport to witness." She was a gray-
haired woman who appeared distressed. Her husband was a tall,
gray-haired man in a dark, pin-striped suit with a white shirt
and dark tie.
The President seemed to show more concern as the interruptions
continued throughout the service. He looked toward Schuchardt
several times and his expression seemed to be a mixture of
embarrassment and distress.
After the service, the President and Mrs. Bush went back to chat
at a church coffee for a few minutes, then left to return to
Walker's Point. As he left, the President was asked if what had
happened had bothered him. He said, "Not in the least."
He was smiling and chatting as he left the church, appeared
relaxed and posed for a photograph with a little girl and her
family.
The church was established in 1730. It was a white-framed
building, simple - inside and outside with a large fan in the
ceiling indoors. It looked like a very traditional church the
kind of thing Norman Rockwell used to paint.
Schuchardt, as far as we know, was taken to be questioned by the
police, but we have no knowledge whether any charges were pressed
or could be pressed. Someone asked a member of the congregation
if they thought charges should be pressed and they said, "For
what," apparently making the point that speaking out in church is
not a crime.
Motorcade back totally uneventful; some families waved at the
President's limousine.

very close friend of mine currently serving in the
Persian Gulf. / wanted to thank you for your kind
gesture, one that / know will mean so very much
to E.J.

House of Representatives and a stratotanker pilot
with the Ohio air National Guard, E.J. serves
both his state and his country proudly. Like
all of us, he was disappointed that diplomatic
initiatives failed to result in a peaceful
solution to the Persian Gulf crisis. He

POOL REPORT # 3 (PART ONE)
FLAPS DOWN POWER WALK ON THE BEACH WITH THE PRESIDENT
KENNEBUNKPORT, MAINE
FEBRUARY 16, 1991
Bush walked at an excruciatingly brisk pace for 64 minutes along
the beach at Goose Rocks, accompanied by Bob Gates who kept up
nicely - frisky Ranger and an exhausted press corps.
The news is slender. Tons of color.
Bush was, literally, interviewed on the run:
At the very end, on an ice patch, there was this exchange:
Question: PARAPHRASE concerned that Gorby exceeding UN
resolutions???
A: "Put it this way, the United Nations position is solid and
there's no giving on that at all!"
Q: Worried about danger of Sov freelance diplomacy?
A: "They're playing a constructive role and that's it."
Q: You got fresh assurances of that?
A: "Yeah, very fresh."
Q: You call Gorby?
A: "Haven't talked to him in the last couple weeks."
During the walk, Bush spoke with good-natured derision about
those who predicted, wrongly, that oil prices would skyrocket.
And, he said, he detected that maybe the markets are concluding
that "the recession is a little less worrisome
"
Now for the color:
In short, Bush brushed off all serious questions, holding up a
mittened hand. Wouldn't answer serious queries about Gorbachev
letter mentioned in NY Times story today.
But, he talked at length on a wide variety subjects including but
not limited to: Bar Bush becoming a computer whiz; flight
training in the 1940s in Minnesota (cold!); exercise; dog-people
relations and the concept of walking press conferences.

that appeared to be hunting accoutrements since they left his
trigger finger free. He often wiped his runny nose with a blue
cowboy-type bandanna.
Bush said that while Truman did walking press conferences, "We
don't do that."
Then he did it for over an hour.
Early on he said, "Where's Mr. Gates. We defer all questions to
him." Replied Gates, "No comment and you can quote me."

Speaking about man's relationship with his dog, Bush took note of
the fact that Ranger ran ahead, then came back, checking on his
"dad" and didn't want to stray too far.
"Here's an interesting sociological observation, Ellen. The fact
that Ranger comes back for reassurance. It's a parental kind of
a thing. He knows I'm his dad. He likes to go off, but return.
Got that?
There were repeated efforts to get Bush, to talk about the
Gorbachev letter. He wouldn't but, referring to hid dog-dad
lecture, he underscored his unwillingness to talk substance by
joking, "Actually, there's a lot of explanation of the
Gorbachev letter in that."
"I was trying to tell you something," he joked, again referring
to the dog sociology lecture.
"When I call Ranger and he turned and came running there's an
interpretation in there. Nuance," said Bush, loving the joke.

Bush said he had just talked to Mitterrand the president of
the republic" and would offer no details.
Also talked to Ozal, staunch member of this coalition

about a dozen Maine residents out for a walk. He stopped to shake
hands with al baby;&discuss with Pat Slattery the good weather and
comment on his "fire dog, a -month Dalmatian named Plato;

had a picture of Bush and her family taken last summer She
offered lots support of Bush on Gulf. He thanked her

north, Bush declared, "This is a weekend. not calling this a
vacation but this summer nothing will intervene, nothing (on his
vacation) You all will be grateful
Bush contended that we did this walk at a 13-minute/mile pace and
that it was the equivalent of 30-minute jog
"How come you all didn't cover Marlin on the slopes. That would
have been a good item, almost an incredible item," he said
blowing the cover on his press secretary's secret Saturday ski
trip.
Bush says hes not running as much as he would like to but uses
the Stairmaster a lot.
As Ranger passed a dog, Bush declared to the dog owner, "That's
Ranger, he doesn't like to fight."
This "interview" is interrupted by Bush repeatedly calling his
dog, "Here Ranger Hya. Hyup." Ranger goes into the ocean,
completely submerges as he chases a duck into the frigid waters.
Bush laughed when asked if he would play golf, take out the boat.
No, he said. But, he was going to visit his boat that is being
stored inside somewhere.
Spoke of Truman era : "Totally different. Goes for a morning
walk with a handful of people. No security to speak of."
Would you prefer it like that? "I'm happy with my lot in life."
Feel like a prisoner? "No."
With his pace slowing only slightly as this walk went on and
on into the frigid wind, Bush waxed reflective, spoke of flight
training in an open airplane in the early 1940s in M Minnesota.
Though, he said, his face was covered with a chamois shield,
"Your face would, literally, get frozen."
As the "walk" progressed, Bush got more playful, beginning once
sentence, "I'm worried about Barbara She's becoming a computer
whiz." It turns out, he said, that the computer Thesaurus he
gave her for Valentine's Day was redundant. "She already had two
of them."
(One on her laptop; another on her at-home computer).
