Like you, I was deeply moved by Hugh Sidey's
essay about my mother and about the principles
that she strived to instill in all of her
children: discipline, kindness, honor, and
concern for others. We miss her very much, but
it helps to know that so many other people loved
and admired Mom, too, and have been keeping us
Bushes in their thoughts and prayers.
Thanks also for letting me know about your plans
to establish a World War II museum here in the
United States, and I appreciate your interest in

Dear Mr. President:
After reading Hugh Sidey's fine essay on the
heritage and values of your mother, I cannot
refrain from writing you tonight. I hope that
this letter reaches you. I am sending it via my
good friend, Roger Porter, who has done such an
outstanding job for you.
It seems like a long time ago when, in January
1980, I first met you at the home of the Charles
Garlands in Baltimore -- and joined your finance
committee, in the first Bush campaign for
President! It has taken a couple of weeks for me
to get past the disappointment of the election.
But, three things have helped:
First, an observation that you made at Camp David
when my wife, Suzanne, and I had the privilege of
attending the dedication of the chapel nearly two
years ago. In your remarks during the service,
you spoke of strength in the face of
disappointment. That observation, and the grace
with which you are transferring power are the
essence of leadership.
Second, Hugh Sidey's observations about your
mother reminded me of important values for which
she stood. My mother, a spry 86, has instilled
those same values in our family.
And, finally, a television program I saw last
night: "George Bush: His War Years." You guys
who fought that war were examples to all of us who
were in the service in later years. While not in

combat, my three years as a 6th Fleet navigator,
1958-'61, were formative to "growing up. Thank
you for that World War II legacy. With its 50th
anniversary, the American people need to be
reminded of those values of teamwork and courage.
With a group of interested citizens I am working
on a project to create the first World War II
Museum, honoring the D-Day/Normandy invasion on
American soil. Bob Dole steered a grant to start
this project, through the Senate. And, thanks to
Roger Porter, a letter requesting a brief

I was one of hundreds of journalists who were in Iraq and Jordan during Operation
Desert Shield, and in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm.

near Khafji, or were hugged by members of the Resistance in liberated Kuwait City,
we were always surrounded by reminders of your leadership in forging the

Our life is short and we are temporal creatures, but we can find
permanence through our faith in God. As humans, our emotions run

George you are going to be remembered as a great President in

AN OPEN LETTER TO EMBASSY COLLEAGUES
Dear Friends:
Since February, I have devoted my full effort to preparing for and
serving as ambassador to Spain. Without doubt, it has been one of
the most rewarding experiences of my career. Given the demands of
the job, Joan and I think we have crammed three years of work and
experience into one year.
With your cooperation, we have helped to strengthen our embassy
operations. we have set clear strategic goals, and we have
aggressively pursued programs designed to promote strong relations
between spain and the United States.
We have brought new American business opportunities to this
country, we have experienced the thrill of the Olympics and
Sevilla's world exposition, and we have made a personal commitment
to provide an American Spirit of Excellence award for leadership at
each of the six American high schools in Spain.
We also have tried to bring a sense of unity and pride to those who
work at the embassy. By Christmas, more than 5,500 guests will have
shared American hospitality at our Residence for receptions,
dinners, working luncheons and copitas. By early January, we will
have held official meetings in more than 50 cities and towns in all
17 autonomous regions of Spain.
It's been a privilege to have met several times with His Majesty
King Juan Carlos and Her Majesty Queen Sofia. Joan and I have. a
deep personal and professional admiration for the inspired
leadership they have brought to modern Spain.
In our discussions in Madrid and around the country, we have met
with President Felipe Gonzalez, cabinet leaders, local mayors,
regional presidents, educators, military commanders, businessmen,
religious leaders and a wide range of dedicated Spaniards who
devote their lives to promoting and protecting Spain's priceless
cultural and artistic heritage.
Along the way, we have endeavored to share some of our American
values, while underscoring our commitment to learn more about this
country. We have met wonderful people everywhere. Some will be
personal friends for life.

Now, the time has come to move on. As you know, I was appointed
early this year by President Bush who has had my support for many
years. I am quite confident there are many candidates for this post
- it clearly is one of the best diplomatic assignments in the
world. And so, President-elect Clinton deserves the fullest
latitude to select his own personal representatives for important
posts, including this key one in Madrid.
Meanwhile, I am grateful to those Senate Democrats and Republicans
who have urged that I continue in the spirit of the bipartisan
support I received early this year from both the Senate Foreign
Relations Committee and the full Senate. Like all appointees, I
submitted my resignation effective at the pleasure of the
President-elect and I offered to remain for a reasonable
transition.
In early November, Joan and I decided that we would leave Spain no
later than March 1. We have important family responsibilities in
California that need our attention, and we have a number of
business prospects that I need to finalize. I also have a strong
desire to complete a book on personal values started before coming
to Spain.
We chose to delay telling our Embassy friends of our decision until
now because we did not want to create any distractions from our
full time commitment to this job. We plan to leave Madrid on
February 23 SO that we can be in California later that week to
accept an award for public service.
From the beginning, it has been our goal In Spain to represent the
United States with honor, dignity and enthusiasm. Above all, we
have sought to do so with absolute substance.
Though we will be leaving Spain in a few weeks, we will remain
significantly involved in the years ahead with efforts to enhance
business, cultural and educational ties with Spain.
Joan and I are proud to have served our country as America's
Ambassador to Spain, and we thank President Bush for the
opportunity to do SO. We also are grateful to have worked closely
with so many good people at the embassy.

Dear 11/m. President,
I can't believe the American people didn't return you to office. You gave
so much and accomplished so much. The country is in an incredibly strong
position to meet it's challenges thanks to your policies. Clinton inherits
a strong country, much as Kennedy, winning with words- one with "change"
and the other "the missile gap".
There is such a terrible tendency to want to second guess oneself. I just
pray that you'll be able to think back on what you almost single-handedly
accomplished: a real chance for peace in the world, the minimizing for now
of the nuclear threat, a World organization, the U.N., that for the first
time acted as it should for world peace against tyranny, the restoring of
America's will and world leadership, maintaining on balance an underlying
dynamic economy torn by extreme, but necessary, regional and industry
readjustments.
I am so grateful to you for saving our world and our country for my
children and grandchildren and my nine month old son. While you say you'll
be spending more time in the grandchildren business, I could always use
some help in the young wife and young son department. Something I never
thpught I would bed doing in my sixties with seven grandchildren on a
ranch in Wyoming.
You might get a kick out of an envelope that miraculously arrived from
your office. ( A copy of which I've enclosed). Anna had sent James Scott
Polk's birth announcement to you and Bar, signing it "Anna Oakley and
Buffalo Bo." It obviously got screened before it got to you.
Your Mother's death on Friday though expected still came as a shock. She
always so warm to me and made me feel so welcome. Believe me on some
occasion that was no mean feat. It was wonderful that you could see her
before she passed on. I was granted a similar blessing with my mother.
Now that you're out of office, have some fun and rest, and then let's get
some private initiatives going in areas we care about.
I have written a little tribute to you. You might have expected more from
an Andover, Yale and Harvard education but those helmets weren't as thick
as they probably should have been when I was co-captaining an undefeated
Andover football team.

Dear President Bush:
I'm writing on behalf of a dear friend of mine, Mrs.
Scottie Jarvis, a 98 year old Scottish lady who practiced
as a nurse-anesthetist until she retired 25 years ago.
One of her fondest memories is of spending a few days at
your house in Kennebunkport to administer anesthesia to
you or your brother during a tonsillectomy. Scottie isn't
sure of the date but remembers it as July, sometime in the
early 1930's. Your parents met her and the doctor at the
train station (Scottie remembers that they were late!).
Do you recall having your tonsils out as a boy?
Scottie is widowed, and lives alone with her cat, Cheetah.
She is a self-described "dyed in the wool Republican" and
continues to vote. I drove her to the polls in 1988 so
she could be sure to vote for you and keep "that little
pipsqueak Dukakis out of the White House." She's planning
to cast her vote for you again in November, shortly after
her 99th birthday.
She's a great animal lover and is a big fan of Mrs. Bush
(and Millie, too). A note from you would really make her
day.
I've enclosed a photo of Scottie blowing out the candles
at her last birthday (one for every ten years - to prevent
a meltdown!).

sympathy upon the death of your mother. What a great
woman! My first memories of her go back to the very
early sixties when your esteemed brother Jonathan got
me into some paddle tennis games with her. She was a
great lady in the finest sense of the word and leaves
us much to try and emulate.
Regarding the election, those who like to fish with you
(my wife Sandy being #1 on the list) take heart in that
you will have more time available to fight the giants
of the deep. But any time you want to be president again,
South Carolina is just one of a number of states who would

Beaufort, Beaufort County and the state all went for Bush.
Sandy has been shrimping, crabbing and catching trout and

Fourteen years have gone by since I began this series of
Christmas messages on my return to Washington in 1979. Fourteen
years would be a long run on Broadway. It is not very long measured
by the centuries old story of Christmas.
This year's message comes from Peter Marshall's book, Let's
Keep Christmas. He was a very well known Presbyterian minister and
a widely read author of religious books when his life was cut short at
the age of 46 in 1949. This passage reflects his special gift for
expressing some of the important things of life in very simple, direct
and human terms.

Christianity
the Second Chance for the world
the hope for peace
and the only way.
The promise that the angels sang is the most wonderful music
the world has ever heard. "Peace on earth and good will toward men."
It was not a pronouncement upon the state of the world then. Nor is it
a reading of the international barometer of the present time
but it is a
promise -- God's promise -- of what one day will come to pass.
The years that are gone are graveyards in which all the persuasions of
men have crumbled into dust. If history has any voice, it is to say that all
these ways of men lead nowhere. There remains one way -- The Way --
untried, untested, unexplored fully
the way of Him Who was born a Babe
in Bethlehem.
In a world that seems not only to be changing, but even to be
dissolving, there are some tens of millions of us who want Christmas to be the
same
with the same old greeting "Merry Christmas" and no other.
We long for the abiding love among men of good will which the season
brings
believing in this ancient miracle of Christmas with its softening,
sweetening influence to tug at our heart strings once again.
We want to hold on to the old customs and traditions because they
strengthen our family ties, bind us to our friends, make us one with all
mankind for whom the Child was born, and bring us back again to the God
Who gave His only begotten Son, that "whosoever believeth in Him should not
perish, but have everlasting life."
So we will not "spend" Christmas
nor "observe" Christmas.
We will "keep" Christmas -- keep it as it is
in all the loveliness of its
ancient traditions.
May we keep it in our hearts, that we may be kept in its hope.

Dear President and Mrs. Bush,
I would like to extend my symphathy to you and your family
on the death of your mother. : have a little story I would
like to share with you.
My husband had the opportunity to teach on a Fulbright
Exchange Program in England in 1978-79. After our year
there we arrived at the airport to find our plane had been
cancelled. We were placed on another flight, this was on a
plane which had every seat occupied. We had the maximum
carry-on luggage containing our "treasures" purchased during
our year. Our almost two-year old daughter had no seat, this
was a little bit difficult since I was over seven months
pregnant at the time. Needless to say, we looked a bit like
gypsies! On the trip, my husband and daughter struck up a
conversation with a women sitting behind us. After a Tittle
history she asked what he knew of American politics, we had
kept up somewhat but were not very well informed
politically. She asked, "Have you heard of a man named
George Bush?" Rob said he didn't know much about him, and
then was given an extensive Biography on you! He asked how
she knew Bush and she said, "He's my son, he's such a nice
boy!"
I wanted to tell you that she must have been such a nice
mother! When we landed in New York, she took time to find
my parents who were meeting us and say what a lovely
grandchild they had (Kristin never fussed on that whole 24
hour trip!), she certainly seemed like a lovely lady.
I hope you receive this, I think good memories help keep
that person alive in us, and I hope this story might do that
for you.

for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and
Baldrige family members prior to the Malcolm Baldrige
Quality Award ceremony.

There are five Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award
winners this year. The Foundation was established to.
provide the private sector a means of supporting the award
financially. Leaders of prominent companies have been
selected to serve as trustees.
