King Juan Carlos: In this difficult moment, one needs friends,
and the Queen and I wanted you to know that you have our
friendship. (U)
The President: Thank you so much. We do need it. We tried to
handle it as best we could, but it has been a very difficult
year. Nevertheless, it has all been very rewarding and making
friends like you was worth all of it. (U)
King Juan Carlos: We wanted to let you know of our friendship,
and I know her majesty wanted to talk to Barbara too. Let me see
if we can find her. (U)
The President: Well, it is wonderful of you to call. I remember
our wonderful dinner with Gorbachev and Felipe. (U)
King Juan Carlos: Yes, I had Gorbachev here this summer. It was
clear that he did not want to leave. (U)
The President: That dinner was so special and it is sweet of you
to call. How are things with you and in Spain? (U)

When will you next be in the states? (U)
King Juan Carlos: I'm not sure, but my son may do a Masters at
Georgetown next year. His friends and his cousin have spoken
highly of it, and he wants to spend time at the center of
American and world politics, in Washington. (U)
The President: Well, I hope he does. He is a fine young man.

King Juan Carlos: Yes, it will be a good lesson for him. What
will you be doing to rest? (U)
The President: Barbara and I are going back to Texas for a
little rest with your good friend Bob Mossbacher. He did a great
job helping on the campaign. (U)
King Juan Carlos: Yes, he's a great man, and the Queen and I are
still using that pepper thing we got together. (U)
The President: The pepper-grinder. Yes, we use ours too.
Here's Barbara. (U)
Mrs. Bush: You may know that we are up at Camp David and looking
for mushrooms. (U)
King Juan Carlos: (Laugh) We wanted to show our sympathy and
friendship to you and George. I don't know where the Queen is
right now. How are you? (U)
Mrs. Bush: We're fine and, of course, disappointed. But, it
will be great for the grand kids. Give her majesty the best.
