Spencer is a vice president of Xerox Corporation and is responsible for guiding and managing the company's research activities in support of its worldwide business. This includes direct line management of the major Xerox research centers: Webster (N.Y.), and Palo Alto (Calif.), Xerox Research Centre of Canada in Mississauga, Ontario, and Rank Xerox EuroPARC in Cambridge, England. Prior to joining Xerox, he was director of systems development at Sandia National Laboratories. He also held a variety of technical and management positions with Bell Laboratories. He has served as an advisor to the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Department of Energy, is a Fellow of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He is a member of the board of directors of Spectra Diode Laboratories, the Computer Museum, and Executone. Spencer serves on the advisory boards of the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Illinois, Stanford University, and Kansas State University. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from William Jewell College in 1952, and a master of science degree in mathematics in 1956 and a doctorate in physics in 1959 from Kansas State University. Spencer has published a number of technical articles on electronics, medical research, and crystal technology, and holds a joint appointment as Adjunct Research Professor of Medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.
