May 8, 1990 BENJAMIN L. HOOKS Executive Director/CEO The President The White House Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Mr. President: With one stroke of your pen, you have told racists, bigots and hate mongers everywhere that violence based on race, religion or sexual orientation will not be tolerated by the Bush Administration. I want to thank you formaily and personally for your commitment to human rights for all Americans. While we Americans don't always agree on policy, focus or direction, right-thinking people recognize integrity when they see 1t. 1 saw it Monday, April 23, and I have applauded it. Having been the target of race haters for more than 80 years, we at the NAACP view the signing of the Hate Crimes Statistics Act as a major step in the direction of a bias-free America. Even as I pen this letter, our national headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland remains under 24-hour police guard, stemming from racial attacks made against us. More than most Americans, we know the danger that bigots pose to the security and stability of this nation and our society. Justice challenged anywhere threatens justice everywhere. Your signing of the hate crimes bill shows that you understand this and that you will fight to ensure that justice reigns for all Americans. We know this legislation will not halt race-oriented violence. But we believe it will do much toward helping us understand the dimensions of that violence and toward devising ways to rid our society of it. AS we have commended Congress for passing this bill, we now commend you for signing it. Sincerely, Ben Benjamin L. Hooks Executive Director
