THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
January 24, 1991
Dear General Abrahamson:
Thank for your kind letter of December 21 inviting me to join you and your
colleagues for the Goddard Memorial Symposium scheduled for March 15 at the
Washington Hilton Hotel. I apologize for the much belated response.
I am happy to accept your invitation but must caution you that occasionally I have to
cancel engagements at the last moment due to Presidential scheduling that requires
my presence. I sincerely hope that this does not happen.
As the time of the symposium approaches, please apprise us of the details for the
event. The date is on my calendar and I hope that I will be available to be with you
during this special time.
I am pleased that you thought of me and look forward to the occasion.
Sincerely yours,
D. Allan Bromley

Dr. Bromley:
The Goddard Memorial Symposium will take place from March 13-15, 1991.
The symposium is associated with the award of the Goddard Memorial Trophy
and adds substance to that event. It will occur at the Washington Hilton Hotel.
The theme of this symposium is Humans and Machines in Space: The Vision,
The Challenge, The Payoff. There will be three sessions. The first session chaired
by James Beggs, former NASA Administrator, will aim at the vision, the second
session chaired by J. R. Thompson, the NASA Deputy Administrator, talking
about the technical challenge, and my session which will occur from 8:30AM
to noon on Friday morning (March 15) will deal with the payoff.
I believe this session, the payoff, can help to raise our sights and add meaning
and support to the President's space initiatives. I hope to provide speakers who
will authoritatively the reasons for our expenditure and endeavor in space. The
presentations will include a look at new science, educational gains, technology
gains, economic potential, societal implications, and our readiness to move forward
into the future. There is no one who can speak on the new dimensions of science
and the relationship of space science to terrestrial sciences as you can.
I remember when you were first nominated for your present position and the
reports reflected your interest in small science and experiments, as well as,
some of the massive undertakings that are presently leading us forward. If you
would be willing to come and use this platform to emphasize your overall view
of space science and help us to appreciate the payback for all of us on Earth,
it will be a great service to us.
I recognize you receive many requests of this kind ... probably too many to respond
to, but the Annual Goddard Symposium is a special one and this is a critical,
transitional time for the President's program and the Nation.
Thank you for your consideration, I sincerely hope you can accept.
Sincerely,
a Abrahemm
