Dear Mr. Iverson:
Thank you for your letter conveying the American Electronics
Association's recommendation of Dr. R. A. Armistead, president
and founder of the Advanced Research and Applications
Corporation, for membership on the National Science Board. The
Association's recommendation is welcome and pertinent.
I shall be pleased to forward your letter and accompanying
statement on Dr. Armistead to the Office of Presidential
Personnel for review and recommendation to the President.
Many thanks for bringing Dr. Armistead to my attention. I look
forward to meeting with you at a time after my confirmation is
concluded to discuss the issues on which we share a mutual
concern.

Dear Dr. Bromley:
The National Science Board currently has three or four
vacancies. After reviewing the composition of the Board, the
American Electronics Association would like to recommend that
small business be represented.
Dr. R. A. Armistead, President and founder of the Advanced
Research and Applications Corporation (ARACOR), would be an
ideal candidate. Dr. Armistead has served the AEA as Chairman
of the National Programs Committee and as a member of the
Executive Committee. His company is typical of the small
businesses representing high technology. In addition, Dr.
Armistead has been a strong supporter of the Republican Party
and especially of President Bush.
The American Electronics Association is the largest high-
technology association in the world representing 3,500
companies across the United States. Although the top 200
companies in the U. S. are members, 70% of those companies are
less than 300 people.
The American Electronics Association is a small business
organization and strongly believes that we should be
represented on the National Science Board.

PRESIDENT
Dr. R. A. Armistead is the President and founder of the Advanced Research
and Applications Corporation (ARACOR), a technology-based company that
manufactures a proprietary line of test and inspection systems and that
provides research services and custom systems under R&D contracts.
Prior to founding ARACOR in 1977, Dr. Armistead held a management
position at SRI International. He has also served as a Project Officer at the
Defense Nuclear Agency and was on the Research Staff of the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory.
Dr. Armistead's academic credentials include a BS in physics (with
highest honors) from the Virginia Military Institute; MS and Ph.D. degrees in
physics/nuclear science from the Carnegie Mellon University; and an MBA degree
from the University of Santa Clara.
He is on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the
American Electronics Association and chairs the National Programs Steering
Committee. He also serves on the Board of the National Innovation Network and
has served as a Director of four corporations. In 1986, Dr. Armistead was
selected to be the Chairman of the California Innovation Committee for the
White House Conference on Small Business. In 1987, he was chosen as the
recipient of the San Francisco Innovation Award and as the National Innovator
of the Year by the Small Business Administration.
