REMARKS FOR FLO HYMAN AWARD
file
FOR EVELYN ASHFORD
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1989
I'LL KEEP THIS SHORT, BECAUSE MY VOICE IS so BAD.
((YESTERDAY I WAS AT A MEETING, HOWEVER, AND DECIDED NOT
TO DELIVER MY REMARKS. ONE OF THE MEN SAID IT WAS ALRIGHT
-- EVERYONE KNOWS HOW TO READ MY LIPS.))
THE FLO HYMAN AWARD IS PRESENTED TO THE FEMALE
ATHLETE WHO EPITOMIZES THE SPIRIT, DEDICATION AND
COMMITMENT OF FLO HYMAN, WHO WAS THE 1984 OLYMPIC
2
VOLLEYBALL CAPTAIN. THIS AWARD IS GIVEN IN HER MEMORY,
AND I AM PLEASED TO PRESENT IT TODAY.
EVERYONE HERE KNOWS EVELYN ASHFORD. SHE IS A
THREE-TIME TRACK OLYMPIAN, AND WON HER THIRD GOLD MEDAL
AND A SILVER AT THE 1988 OLYMPICS. SHE IS TRULY AN
OUTSTANDING ATHLETE, AND CARRIES WITH HER THE RESPECT OF
HER PEERS. I KNOW BARBARA APPRECIATES EVELYN'S TREMENDOUS
WORK AS NATIONAL CO-CHAIRPERSON OF "ATHLETES FOR
LITERACY."
3
EVELYN, I'D LIKE TO PRESENT THE FLO HYMAN AWARD TO
YOU NOW. CONGRATULATIONS.

PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS: NATIONAL WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY
AND FLO HYMAN MEMORIAL AWARD CEREMONY
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1989
I'll keep this short, because my voice is so bad.
( (Yesterday I was at a meeting, however, and decided not to
deliver my remarks. One of the men said it was alright --
everyone knows how to read my lips.) )
The Flo Hyman Award is presented to the female athlete who
epitomizes the spirit, dedication and commitment of Flo Hyman,
who was the 1984 Olympic volleyball captain. This award is given
in her memory, and I am pleased to present it today.
Everyone here knows Evelyn Ashford. She is a three-time
track Olympian, and won her third gold medal and a silver at the
1988 Olympics. She is truly an outstanding athlete, and carries
with her the respect of her peers. I know Barbara appreciates
Evelyn's tremendous work as National Co-chairperson of "Athletes
for Literacy."
Evelyn, I'd like to present the Flo Hyman Award to you now.
Congratulations.
