Birthdays remind me of a story I once read about Mark Twain. One night a group of Twain's friends and admirers sent birthday greetings to the globe-trotting writer. Since none of them knew where he was, they mailed a letter addressed "Mark Twain, God Knows Where. " Some weeks later they received an acknowledgement reading simply: "He did. " Well, Carl, tonight your friends and admirers all know where you are, and what you've accomplished in your lifetime. With your help, Cincinnati is a showplace city thriving and prosperous. It's always great to be back in Texas, even if this time it's only through the wizardry of television. But, I wanted to join you today because we're saluting a great Texan and someone whom I've admired for a very long time -- Coach Tom Landry. Now, Coach, I have to admit that in those early days, I wasn't sure if the Cowboys were playing professional football or doing a Texas two-step But, it didn't take long for that to change. Through your special talent and motivation you molded teams that have always been the very models of American champions. Tom, in the political world, it sometimes seems as if there are more titles than there are people. But your five Superbowl appearances represent the grit and determination that only a select few can claim. The very fact that you have won two world championships, speaks to the hard work, dedication and drive which has been the trademark of your teams. Tom, it's a great pleasure to join you and your family on this special day. I know they're as proud of you as this Texan is. Thank you, God bless you all, and God bless the Lone Star state.
