MARINE SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION BALL
Good evening to you all, it's a pleasure to be with you on
this special occasion.
The Marine Scholarship Ball combines two concepts that
Barbara and I hold close to our hearts: Love of country, love of
education. It's impossible to fully describe what the Marines
mean to the United States. Suffice it to say that when someone
speaks of our nation's strength and resolve, semper fi comes to
mind.
And we also know that the backbone of our national strength
evolves from an educated citizenry. That's why the work of the
Marine Scholarship Foundation is so important. For the past 27
years, the Foundation has helped the children of Marines further
-EDUCATIONAL stet
their education goals. With the Foundation's help, young minds
have been opened, new interests peaked. And, when a young
American is given an opportunity to continue his or her
education, the whole country becomes stronger. But, that's just
like the Marines. Always giving. Always looking to the future.
Let me close by congratulating all the Scholarship
recipients for this year. We expect a lot out of you, but as
members of the Marine family, I know you'll make us proud.
-2-
And, let me also hail the Foundation, its National Chairman,
Peter Haas, and Chicago Chairman, Colonel Jerry Wulf. High
praise also goes to the Scholarship Ball Committee and its
Chairman, Phillip Rooney, for making this evening possible.
I thank and salute you all for the wonderful work you've
done. Have a wonderful night, God bless you and God bless the
United States of America.

NATIONAL YOUTH SPORT'S PROGRAM
As a father, grandfather, and as President, it's always a
pleasure for me to talk about America's most important asset --
our young people. That's why the work of the National Youth
Sports Program (NYSP) is so important.
brought wheRe?
Every summer, for the past twenty summers, NYSP has brought
thousands of disadvantaged youngsters to spend a week on college
campuses. Here, they receive quality sports instruction, learn
the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, and how to compete in our
ever-changing economy. In addition, each youngster receives a
free medical examination, and a free daily hot meal. But, the
real focus of NYSP centers around sports -- and what a youngster
can learn about everyday living from sports.
The message of NYSP is one for all of our nation's young
people: If you want a future of real opportunity don't take the
easy way out, whether that's drugs, dropping out of school, or
giving in to peer pressure.
I am proud to support NYSP and urge you to join me in
helping make the program a continuing success.

NATIONAL TOURISM AWARENESS DAY
Thank you, John. It's wonderful to join you on National
Tourism Awareness Day as we highlight the many contributions your
industry has made to America.
We live in the most mobile society the world has ever known.
Whether for business or pleasure, the world is on the go. And
wherever tourists go, local economies benefit. Last year, in
fact, travel in the United States grew into a $318 billion
industry. It also generated some $37 billion in tax revenues, a
big help toward reducing the federal budget deficit. And,
equally important, travel and tourism directly employs five-and
one-half million Americans.
I know from my own experience that there's a strong desire
among people everywhere to get to know each other better -- not
only in our country, but throughout the world. What a wonderful
benefit from the travel industry and what a wonderful
contribution to world understanding and peace.
Your local convention and visitors bureau stimulates this
domestic and international travel from the grassroots. I
-2-
encourage each of you to continue your support of the travel
industry and I join you in saluting those five-and one-half

NATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR ILEITIS AND COLITIS
Good evening. It's a pleasure to join you for this Torch of
Friendship Awards Dinner. I'm sure my old friend and dinner
chairperson, Mrs. Lester Crown, has organized a wonderful
evening.
As many of you know, I have a special interest in the
progress made toward a cure of ileitis and colitis. It's simply
as important to me as the life and well-being of Marvin, my
youngest son. Because of Marvin's colitis, Barbara and I are
always thankful for medical advances toward curing this disease.
That's why I join you in recognizing the outstanding work of
tonight's honoree, Robert Schoellhorn. As Chairman and CEO of
Abbott Laboratories, Bob, you have brought important
technological innovations, and advances in productivity to the
healthcare industry. Through your generous financial support and
critical medical research, Abbott Laboratories has played a
significant role in the fight against these terrible diseases.
Bob, for your efforts, you have the heartfelt thanks of the
Bush family.
-2-
Thank you all for attending tonight's important event.
While the work isn't yet done, we know that the Foundation's
important efforts will continue until a cure is found. Thank you

ALVAH CHAPMAN DINNER
For reasons well known to most of you, I have a very special
place in my heart for South Florida and Miami. That is why I
appreciate this opportunity to recognize Alvah's many
contributions over the years, to our country and the American
newspaper business, and more specifically, to South Florida and
its people.
Alvah is a leader who has consistently made a difference in
helping to move Miami ahead. During my years as Vice President
and as head of the Task Force Against Drugs in South Florida, it
was my great pleasure to work with Alvah on that important
project and to see his many contributions first-hand. I deeply
admire and respect the strong, unwavering leadership he provided
as head of Miami Citizens Against Crime.
I am very pleased to join with you in honoring Alvah for his
lifetime of achievements that has touched so many of our lives.
Alvah, I salute you as a patriot, as a leader of one of America's
finest media companies and as a man who has given so much to his
fellow citizens. Congratulations, and thank you from all of us.

CARL LINDNER DINNER
Good evening, it's wonderful to be with you as we celebrate
a very special event -- the 70th birthday of Cincinnati's own,
Carl Lindner.
Birthdays remind me of a story I once read about Mark Twain.
One night a group of Twain's friends and admirers sent birthday
greetings to the globe-trotting writer. Since none of them knew
where he was, they mailed a letter addressed "Mark Twain, God
Knows Where." Some weeks later they received an acknowledgement
reading simply: "He did."
Well, Carl, tonight your friends and admirers all know where
you are, and what you've accomplished in your lifetime. With
your help, Cincinnati is a showplace city thriving and
prosperous. But your kindness and generosity -- much of it
anonymous -- extends far beyond your beloved hometown to helping
people across this great land. You're the best kept secret since
the recipe for Cincinnati chili!
Carl, it's great to be with you on this special occasion.
We are grateful for your caring. You are America at its best.

COACH TOM LANDRY TRIBUTE
Good afternoon. It's always great to be back in Texas, even
if this time it's only through the wizardry of television. But,
I wanted to join you today because we're saluting a great Texan
and someone whom I've admired for a very long time -- Coach Tom
Landry.
Now, Coach, I have to admit that in those early days, I
wasn't sure if the Cowboys were playing professional football or
doing a Texas two-step
But, it didn't take long for that to
change. Through your special talent and motivation you molded
teams that have always been the very models of American
champions.
Tom, in the political world, it sometimes seems as if there
are more titles than there are people. But your five Superbowl
appearances represent the grit and determination that only a
select few can claim. The very fact that you have won two world
championships, speaks to the hard work, dedication and drive
which has been the trademark of your teams.
Tom, it's a great pleasure to join you and your family on
this special day. I know they're as proud of you as this Texan
is. Thank you, God bless you all, and God bless the Lone Star

Thank you, and God bless you all.

I know they're as proud of you as this Texan
is. Thank you, God bless you all, and God bless the Lone Star
state.

For the past 27
years, the Foundation has helped the children of Marines further
their education goals.
And congratulation are also due to tomights'
honorees, David Rodevich and Vernon Lonchs.

NATIONAL YOUTH SPORT'S PROGRAM
As a father, grandfather, and as President, it's always a
pleasure for me to talk about America's most important asset --
our young people. That's why the work of the National Youth
Sports Program (NYSP) is SO. important.

encourage each of you to continue your support of the travel
industry and I join you in saluting those five-and one-half

Good evening. It's a pleasure to join you for this Torch of

chairperson, Mrs.
