The Bush family has long been strong supporters of USO. My Dad, in fact, was one of four business leaders who worked with President Roosevelt to start the USO in 1941. I know he would (no comma) be very proud of where the USO stands today. I've known first-hand the important work the USO performs. As members of the Catholic Press Association, you should be especially proud of this year -- the Bicentennial of the Catholic Church in the United States. The Catholic press is a prime example of what the Constitution's First Amendment is all about -- freedom of speech, and religion. The Bush family has long been strong supporters of USO. My Dad, in fact, was one of four business leaders who worked with President Roosevelt to start the USO in 1941. I know he would be very proud of where the USO stands today. I've seen known first-hand the important work the USO performs. As a teenage Navy pilot in World War II, over-and-over again USO volunteers brought a little bit of America to me and my comrades. In the time since, who can say how many lives the USO has brightened or even saved. What I do know is that the simple white lettering on a field of blue is certain to bring a quick smile to those serving their country a continent or more away. On Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day or New Year's Day, USO volunteers are devoting time and energy to ease a soldier's sacrifice. Pearl, you're shown us that we can all do a little more, give a little extra, share a bit of time to serve those in need. -2- I also want to thank another special friend, Heinz Prechter. You've done it again, Heinz. Thanks for all you do for Detroit and our country. Also thanks to Bill East, Louie Bellson, Paul Borman, and Jim Wood and everyone else who stepped forward to make tonight's celebration a success. So tonight, let us celebrate Covenant House's past triumphs by keeping an eye on the future. Because tomorrow there will be a child on a street corner somewhere in America, with no place to turn. I'll rest a little easier knowing that volunteers at Covenant House are there to help. Thank you very much, God bless you all and God bless the Covenant House. # # # Tron May 12, 1989 Draft two Title: USO PROPOSED VIDEO MESSAGE USO - 50th ANNIVERSARY DINNER Good evening, it's a pleasure to join you in Detroit as we celebrate an important milestone in the USO's history -- fifty years of song, laughter, and entertainment for millions of American servicemen and women around the world. The Bush family has long been strong supporters of USO. My Dad, in fact, was one of four business leaders who worked with President Roosevelt to start the USO in 1941. I know, he would be very proud of where the USO stands today. I've known first-hand the important work the USO performs. Barbara and I wish we could be with you tonight as you honor one of our dearest friends, Pearl Bailey. Pearl, you're shown us that we can all do a little more, give a little extra, share a bit of time to serve those in need. -2- I also want to thank another special friend, Heinz Prechter. You've done it again, Heinz. Thanks for all you do for Detroit and our country. And, to my friend Lee Greenwood, thanks for the many contributions to the USO and especially for recording USO's 50th Anniversary song. Also thanks to Bill East, Louie Bellson, Paul Borman, and Jim Wood and everyone else who stepped forward to make tonight's celebration a success. In closing, I want you to know that the financial support and volunteer assistance provided tonight is citical for the USO to continue to serve the young servicemen and women who wear the uniforms of the United States military. Thank you for including me in tonight's special ceremony. God bless you all, and God bless the United States of America. # # #
