CATHOLIC PRESS ASSOCIATION
Greetings from the White House. It's a great pleasure to
join you at this year's convention.
I've always felt that conventions are not just a time to
celebrate the year's successes ------------------------- but an opportunity to reflect
on the greater contributions made to our society. As members of
the Catholic Press Association, you should be especially proud of
this year -- the Bicentennial of the Catholic Church in the
United States.
The Catholic press is a prime example of what the
Constitution's First Amendment is all about -- freedom of speech,
and religion. And just as truth is one of the tenets of our
democracy it is also the foundation of your many publications.
With nearly 500 newspapers and magazines, serving a readership of
(the Catholic Press Association has a critical
almost 25 million readers, you have an important impact on our
American way of life.
But, the Catholic press is more than a listing of
publications or even its vast readership, you're also an
important driving force in the fight for decency and morality in
the United States. When you write about the problems faced by
the poor, the homeless, or older Americans, you not only bring to
light the injustices in our society, but motivate us to action.
-2-
As members of the Catholic Press Association, I know you'll
your impo ston + mission
continue your defense of the First Amendment both in its
guarantee of free speech, and in its protection of freedom of
religious expression. And, that is something for which everyone
in this country should be grateful.
Thank you, for all the important work you do. And, God
bless you all.

Good evening, it's a pleasure to join you in Detroit as we

The Bush family has long been strong supporters of USO. My

In the time since, who can say how many lives the USO has
brightened or even saved. What I do know is that the simple
white lettering on a field of blue is certain to bring a quick
smile to those serving their country a continent or more away.
On Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day or New Year's Day, USO
volunteers are devoting time and energy to ease a soldier's
sacrifice.
Barbara and I wish we could be with you tonight as you honor
one of our dearest friends, Pearl Bailey. Pearl, you're shown us
that we can all do a little more, give a little extra, share a
bit of time to serve those in need.

I also want to thank another special friend, Heinz Prechter.
You've done it again, Heinz. Thanks for all you do for Detroit
and our country. And, to my friend Lee Greenwood, thanks for the
many contributions to the USO and especially for recording USO's
50th Anniversary song. Also thanks to Bill East, Louie Bellson,
Paul Borman, and Jim Wood and everyone else who stepped forward
to make tonight's celebration a success.
In closing, I want you to know that the financial support

USO - 50th ANNIVERSARY DINNER
Good evening, it's a pleasure to join you in Detroit as we
celebrate an important milestone in the USO's history -- fifty
years of song, laughter, and entertainment for millions of
American servicemen and women around the world.
The Bush family has long been strong supporters of USO. My
Dad, in fact, was one of four business leaders who worked with
President Roosevelt to start the USO in 1941. I know, he would
be very proud of where the USO stands today.
I've seen first-hand the important work the USO performs.
When I was a teenage Navy pilot in World War II, over and over
again USO volunteers brought a little bit of America to my
comrades and me.
In the time since, who can say how many lives the USO has
brightened or even saved? What I do know is that the simple
white lettering on a field of blue is certain to bring a quick
smile to those serving their country a continent away. On
Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day or New Year's Day, USO
volunteers are devoting time and energy to ease a soldier's
sacrifice.
Barbara and I wish we could be with you tonight as you honor
one of our dearest friends, Pearl Bailey. Pearl, you've shown us
that we can all do a little more, give a little extra, share a
bit of time to serve those in need.
-2-
I also want to thank another special friend, Heinz Prechter.
You've done it again, Heinz. Thanks for all you do for Detroit
and our country. And, to my friend Lee Greenwood, thanks for the
many contributions to the USO and especially for recording USO's
50th Anniversary song. Also thanks to Bill East, Louie Bellson,
Paul Borman, and Jim Wood and everyone else who stepped forward
to make tonight's celebration a success.
In closing, I want you to know that the financial support
and volunteer assistance provided tonight is critical for the USO
so it can continue to serve the young servicemen and women who
wear the uniforms of the United States military.
Thank you for including me in tonight's special ceremony.
God bless you all, and God bless the United States of America.

Congratulations to all the winners and participants in this
year's Odyssey of the Mind World Finals. I know you've all
traveled a long way to be here -- both in competition and in

Republic of China to be here this week.
Knowing the problems Sam Micklus had you solve this year,
cutting our federal budget deficit without raising taxes should
be a cakewalk for all of you. In fact, maybe I should ask Sam to
add that question in next year's competition.
Odyssey of the Mind is just that -- a voyage using your
creativity to employ divergent thinking skills, and to draw on
your originality as a primary resource. Using everything from
mouse traps to Moby Dick, I'm sure this year's competition
challenged each of you. But, it's clear to me that the problems
you've worked on have taught you the importance and reward of
original thought. It's sounds like a simple thing to learn, but
it's vitally important in whatever career field you choose.
But, problem solving isn't the whole story behind Odyssey of

Felicidades! It's a pleasure to join you and your
distinguished guests for a very important event -- the twentieth

In only twenty years, CPLC has distinguished itself by
providing essential community services to individuals and
families in Arizona. Through your ability to work with community
members of all social and economic backgrounds -- and to
cultivate successful partnerships with the government and the
private sector -- CPLC has moved solidly toward its goal of equal
opportunity and self-sufficiency for all Arizonians. By
developing and implementing an innovative network of services --
carefully balanced between social services and economic
development programs -- CPLC has created opportunities for
thousands of people of all ages.
But, tonight, we not only celebrate the accomplishments of

COVENANT HOUSE DINNER
Good evening. I'm honored to be with you for tonight's
program. As many of you know Father Bruce was our guest at the
White House recently, along with Director of Volunteers Arlene
Stepputat, and Andrew Dodge, one of your loyal and outstanding
volunteers.
We invited Father Bruce to present him with a special award
-- recognizing Covenant House as the number one volunteer program
in the nation. And, as Covenant House moves strongly into its
third decade, I think it's important to pause and reflect on the
important work Covenant House volunteers perform.
First, there are the volunteers on the 24-hour a day Nine-
Line. When a frightened, desperate kid calls for help, they are
always prepared to offer whatever is needed. Whether it's
finding a hot meal for a teenager in Minneapolis, or talking to a
desperate kid contemplating suicide in Denver -- Covenant House
volunteers are there to help. The nearly one-and-a-half million
calls that were fielded by volunteers this past year are a vivid
testament to Nine-Line's success.
And, let's remember the volunteers working the Outreach vans
-- selflessly spending their nights searching for homeless kids
and bringing them into the safety of Covenant House shelters.
And the volunteers who speak to these kids within the shelters,
-2-
helping them make decisions to change their unhappy lives.
And let me highlight the good work of Denis Coleman. He's
not only a member of the national board of Covenant House, but is
also is a volunteer. And, as mentor in the Rights of Passage
program, he richly deserves tonight's honor.
We're at a milestone in the history of Covenant House --
twenty years of miracles. But, there is still so much work to be
done. Children face misery and suffering every day. So tonight,
let us celebrate Covenant House's past triumphs by keeping an eye
on the future. Because tomorrow there will be a child on a
street corner somewhere in America, with no place to turn. I'll
rest a little easier knowing that volunteers at Covenant House
are there to help.
Thank you very much, God bless you all and God bless the
Covenant House.

Greetings from the White House. It's a great pleasure to

I've always felt that conventions are not just a time to
celebrate the year's successes -- but an opportunity to reflect
on the greater contributions made to our society.
With nearly 500 newspapers and magazines, serving a readership of
almost 25 million readers, you have an important impact on our
American way of life.
But, the Catholic press is more than a listing of
publications or even its vast readership, you're also an
important driving force in the fight for decency and morality in
the United States. When you write about the problems faced by
the poor, the homeless, or older Americans, you not only bring to

original thought. It's sounds like a simple thing to learn, but
it's vitally important in whatever career field you choose.
But, problem solving isn't the whole story behind Odyssey of
the Mind -- it's volunteers. All the parents, teachers, coaches,
and other school officials who contributed their time and energy
for this program. Behind each one of our finalists is a
volunteer support network that can proudly claim to be one of
those thousand points of light I like to talk about so much.

CATHOLIC PRESS ASSOCIATION
Greetings from the White House. It's a great pleasure to
join you at this year's convention.
I've always felt that conventions are not just a time to
celebrate the year's successes -- but an opportunity to reflect
on the greater contributions made to our society. As members of
the Catholic Press Association, you should be especially proud
this year -- the Bicentennial of the Catholic Church in the
United States.
The Catholic press is a prime example of what the
Constitution's First Amendment is all about -- freedom of speech,
and religion. And just as truth is one of the tenets of our
democracy it is also the foundation of your many publications.
With nearly 500 newspapers and magazines, serving a readership of
almost 25 million readers, you have an important impact on our
American way of life.
-2-
As members of the Catholic Press Association, I know you'll
continue your defense of the First Amendment -- both in its
guarantee of free speech, and in its protection of freedom of
religious expression. And, that is something for which everyone
in this country should be grateful.
Thank you, for all the important work you do. And, God
bless you all.

CHICANOS POR LA CAUSA
Felicidades! It's a pleasure to join you and your
distinguished guests for a very important event -- the twentieth
anniversary of Chicanos Por La Causa.
But, tonight, we not only celebrate the accomplishments of
the last twenty years, but look forward to what CPLC will bring
to Arizona as you begin your third decade. If the past is any
indication, the best is yet to come. Thank you, God bless the
good work you do, and God bless the United States of America.

And the volunteers who speak to these kids within the shelters,
-2- -
helping them make decisions to change their unhappy lives.
And let me highlight the good work of Denis Coleman. He's
not only a member of the national board of Covenant House, but is
Rites?
also is a volunteer. And, as mentor in the Rights of Passage
?
program, he richly deserves tonight's honor.

I've known first-hand the important work the USO performs.

As a teenage Navy pilot in World War II, over-and-over again USO
volunteers brought a little bit of America to me and my comrades.

In closing, I want you to know that the financial support
and volunteer assistance provided tonight is citical for the USO
to continue to serve the young servicemen and women who wear the
uniforms of the United States military.
Thank you for including me in tonight's special ceremony.
God bless you all, and God bless the United States of America.

Johnny, your talent as both a singer and songwriter, your
community involvement, and tireless work on behalf of drug
awareness and prevention programs has distinguished you as a
giant of country music. Across this great land, your songs have
helped reawaken patriotism and pride in America.
Johnny, as a long standing fan of country music, I'm proud

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND
Congratulations to all the winners and participants in this
year's Odyssey of the Mind World Finals. I know you've all
traveled a long way to be here -- both in competition and in
distance -- some of you coming from as far away as the People's
Republic of China to be here this week.
Knowing the problems Sam Micklus had you solve this year,
cutting our federal budget deficit without raising taxes should
be a cakewalk for all of you. In fact, maybe I should ask Sam to
add that question in next year's competition.
Odyssey of the Mind is just that -- a voyage using your
creativity to employ divergent thinking skills, and to draw on
your originality as a primary resource. Using everything from
mouse traps to Moby Dick, I'm sure this year's competition
