SUMMARY Attached please find the remarks which you will make during the regular service at the American Cathedral in Paris on Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. There will be French and American citizens in attendance. II. DISCUSSION Your remarks are based on the "inherent right of all men and women to live in peace and freedom." Several scripture readings from the Bible have been selected to reflect this theme. PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS: CHURCH SERVICE PARIS, FRANCE SUNDAY, JULY 16, 1989 Thank you, Dean Leo, ladies and gentlemen, my French and American friends. The past few days have been days of celebration and days of history in the making. But underlying all the ceremony and the summitry is a belief in the inherent right of all men and women to live in peace and freedom. The Bible had much to say about freedom and we see God's hand in the words of Corinthians, Chapter 3, Verse 17: "Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." And in the words from James, Chapter 2 Verse 25: "But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed." And let us' never forget Matthew, Chapter 5, Verse 9: 2 "Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be the children of God. " ) But on this day when the leaders of the free world join together, perhaps the Old Testament verses of Isaiah can best guide us, Chapter 4, Verses 1 through five: But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion and the world of the Lord from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among many people and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the 3 Lord of hosts hath spoken it. For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the Lord our God for ever and ever. Here ends the reading. FILE REMARKS: CHURCH SERVICE PARIS, FRANCE SUNDAY, JULY 16, L989 THANK YOU, DEAN LEO, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, MY FRENCH AND AMERICAN FRIENDS. - 2 - THE BIBLE HAD MUCH TO SAY ABOUT FREEDOM AND WE SEE GOD'S HAND IN THE WORDS OF SECOND CORINTHIANS, CHAPTER 3, VERSE 17: "Now THE LORD IS THAT SPIRIT: AND WHERE THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS, THERE IS LIBERTY." AND IN THE WORDS FROM JAMES, CHAPTER 2 VERSE 25: - 3 - "BUT WHOSO LOOKETH INTO THE PERFECT LAW OF LIBERTY AND CONTINUETH THEREIN, HE BEING NOT A FORGETFUL HEARER, BUT A DOER OF THE WORK, THIS MAN SHALL BE BLESSED IN HIS DEED." AND LET US NEVER FORGET MATTHEW, CHAPTER 5, VERSE 9: "BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS FOR THEY SHALL BE THE CHILDREN OF GoD." - 4 - BUT ON THIS DAY WHEN THE LEADERS OF THE FREE WORLD JOIN TOGETHER, PERHAPS THE OLD TESTAMENT VERSES OF ISAIAH CAN BEST GUIDE US, CHAPTER 4, VERSES 1 THROUGH FIVE: BUT IN THE LAST DAYS IT SHALL COME TO PASS, THAT THE MOUNTAIN OF THE HOUSE OF THE LORD SHALL BE ESTABLISHED IN THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAINS, AND IT SHALL BE EXALTED ABOVE THE HILLS; AND PEOPLE SHALL FLOW UNTO IT. - 5 - AND MANY NATIONS SHALL COME, AND SAY, COME, AND LET US GO UP TO THE MOUNTAIN OF THE LORD, AND TO THE HOUSE OF THE GOD OF JACOB; AND HE WILL TEACH US OF HIS WAYS, AND WE WILL WALK IN HIS PATHS: FOR THE LAW SHALL GO FORTH OF ZION AND THE WORLD OF THE LORD FROM JERUSALEM. - 6 - AND HE SHALL JUDGE AMONG MANY PEOPLE AND REBUKE STRONG NATIONS AFAR OFF; AND THEY SHALL BEAT THEIR SWORDS INTO PLOWSHARES, AND THEIR SPEARS INTO PRUNINGHOOKS: NATION SHALL NOT LIFT UP A SWORD AGAINST NATION, NEITHER SHALL THEY LEARN WAR ANY MORE. BUT THEY SHALL SIT EVERY MAN UNDER HIS VINE AND UNDER HIS FIG TREE; AND NONE SHALL MAKE THEM AFRAID: FOR THE MOUTH OF THE LORD OF HOSTS HATH SPOKEN IT. - 7 - FOR ALL PEOPLE WILL WALK EVERY ONE IN THE NAME OF HIS GOD, AND WE WILL WALK IN THE NAME OF THE LORD OUR GOD FOR EVER AND EVER. HERE ENDS THE READING. ###
