PROPOSED VIDEO MESSAGE
COAST GUARD'S 200TH ANNIVERSARY
What a great pleasure it is to join you in marking the 200th
Anniversary of the Coast Guard. Christened a few years after the
birth of our Constitution, the Coast Guard -- and its
distinguished corps -- has earned a special place in the nautical
history of America.
In two centuries of bravery, determination and sacrifice,
who can count the number of Americans -- lost and abandoned on
the high seas -- that the Coast Guard has safely returned to
port? And who knows for sure how many accidents your instruction
courses and inspections have prevented? What we do know is that
the Coast Guard flag waving atop a cutter plowing through the
turmoil of hurricane seas, or stenciled on a helicopter flying a
routine reconnaissance mission along the coastline -- is a sign
of safety, a beacon of hope.
And today's Coast Guard has an even greater mission. I want
to especially thank you for tracking and intercepting drug
traffickers off our coasts. It's dangerous work, but absolutely
vital to our national health and our security. While the Coast
Guard's founding fathers didn't foresee the drug problem, you've
answered your country's call for help loud and clear. But,
that's just like the Coast Guard. Always ready to serve, always
willing to answer an S-0-S.
2
Thank you for the important work you do. God bless you all,
and God bless the United States Coast Guard.

TITLE: AIR FORCE
PROPOSED VIDEO MESSAGE
AIR FORCE ASSOCIATION
Ladies and gentlemen, I am honored to open this, the 28th
International Convention of the Air Force Sergeants Association.
Were it possible for me to be there in person, I would look
out across the room to see veterans of three wars and the faces
of those of you who have given a loved-one in defense of this
great nation. As Commander-in-Chief, that is a tough assignment.
As President, I am proud of your accomplishments and of your
traditions.
The free world today owes a great debt to the enlisted men
and women of our armed forces. Without you, the system just
doesn't work. In uniform, you are the symbols of freedom tasked
to protect and keep that peace. It's a uniform I know you wear
proudly.
In a few moments, as you open your convention, you will
pledge allegiance to the grande old flag with conviction and
respect. That standard of red, white, and blue has been the
reason for living and dying for hundreds of thousands of men and
women who have gone before you. This American flag has been worn
on the sleeves of airmen; carried in pockets behind enemy lines;
scratched in cell walls by prisoners of war; and, draped in a
final salute, to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The
2
American flag deserves our respect and I am committed to that
pledge.
Ladies and gentlemen, I wish you continued success, as you,
the members of the Air Force Sergeants Association, help maintain
the quality of life for our young airmen and those who have
earned their retirement after dedicated and honorable service to
this great nation. I salute you for the outstanding work you do
and your commitment to the peace and security of our nation.
Thank you, God bless you all and God bless the United States of
America.

PROPOSED VIDEO MESSAGE
PRESIDENT EZRA TAFT BENSON BIRTHDAY GREETING
Ezra Taft Benson, happy birthday! When I told Barbara you
were celebrating your ninetieth birthday she smiled, shook her
head, and said, "George, and I thought your birthday cake looked
like a bonfire!"
But, my friend, we're not here to count candles, or the
years -- we'd rather marvel at all that you've accomplished.
From your early days as an Idaho farm boy when you drove a horse
and wagon at age four, your life has been one marked by
achievement after accomplishment. From your distinguished
service as Secretary of Agriculture in the Eisenhower
Administration, through your long involvement with the Boy Scouts
-- your leadership and hard work have helped so many. But, I
especially applaud your worldwide contributions to the Church of
Latter-day Saints.
Since 1921, when you first served as a young missionary in
the British Isles, through your calling as a member of the Quorum
of the Twelve Apostles in 1943 and finally as President of the
Church in 1985, your service has been the very model of selfless
devotion and compassion. No matter how difficult the task, no
matter how distant the problem, you've always been willing to
extend a helping hand to those in trouble.

RBP
SUBJECT:
Four Video Scripts
I have reviewed the four video scripts circulated for com-
ment today. The one's dealing with the Coast Guard Anniversary
and with the Air Force Association look good and I have no
suggested changes.
I do, however, have a number of suggestions for the birth-
day greeting to President Ezra Taft Benson. I have put these
on the attached copy and would be happy to discuss them with
you if you have any questions.
I have known Ezra Taft Benson for many years and can
attest to the accuracy of the changes I am suggesting.

In uniform ou are the symbols of freedom tasked

Re:

Coast Guard
In graf 2, line 8, why say "routine"? That doesn't make
it sound very heroic. It reads better just as "a helicopter
flying a reconnaissance mission." Maybe you could even add
"along a rugged coast," to make it seem a little more courageous.
In graf 3, second to last line, I would note that the motto of
the Coast Guard is "semper paratus" -- "always prepared" In
either Latin or English, that would sound a little better than
"always ready."
Air Force
The sentence in line 4 of graf 2("As Commander in Chief") lacks
an adequate lead-in. I recognize this as the standard formulation
about Presidents facing the agony of sending young men off to war,
but it isn't adequately set up.
Graf 4, line3-4needs a little work. "reason for living and dying
for" is not a very poetic or senstive expression of the inspirational
quality of the flag. How about this, done on a typewriter with
no easy turning back, as with a word processor: "The red, white,
and blue standard has, for two centuries, been a call to greatness.
The men and women who have gone before you in the great tradition
of the Coast Guard have passed a legacy on to you -- a legacy of
service and sacrifice that I know you will uphold."
That's not particularly good either, but at least it avoids
un-euphonious word choices that trivialize the speaker ("for
for").
Finally, on the second page, two little things. The use of
"pledge" on line 2 of the first graf needs to be set up better.
Something like "I am committed to upholding the words and the
sacred meaning of the pledge." Also, I wonder, from a sexism
point of view, about the use of "airmen" in the 2nd graf.

head, and said, "George, and I thought your birthday cake looked

But, Ezra, we're not here to count candles, or the years --
we'd rather marvel at all that you've accomplished. From your
early days in the valley of the great Salt Lake when you drove a
wagon train at age four, you're life has been one marked by
achievement after accomplishment. From your distinguished
service as Secretary of Agriculture in the Eisenhower
Administration, through your long involvement with the Boy Scouts

compassion. No matter how difficult the task, no matter how
