Christened a few years after the birth of our Constitution, the Coast Guard -- and its distinguished corps -- has earned a special place in the nautical history of America. In two centuries of bravery, determination and sacrifice, who can count the number of Americans -- lost and abandoned on the high seas -- that the Coast Guard has safely returned to port? And who knows for sure how many accidents your instruction courses and inspections have prevented? What we do know is that the Coast Guard flag waving atop a cutter plowing through the turmoil of hurricane seas, or stenciled on a helicopter flying a routine reconnaissance mission along the coastline -- is a sign of safety, a beacon of hope. And today's Coast Guard has an even greater mission. I want to especially thank you for tracking and intercepting drug traffickers off our coasts. It's dangerous work, but absolutely vital to our national health and our security. While the Coast Guard's founding fathers didn't foresee the drug problem, you've answered your country's call for help loud and clear. But, that's just like the Coast Guard. Cicconi 89 JUL 21 P4: 25 THE WHITE house WASHINGTON 89 JUL 21 P6: 05 July 21, 1989 Memorandum to Chriss Winston From: Jim Pinkerton Re: Comments on video scripts Coast Guard In graf 2, line 8, why say "routine"? That doesn't make it sound very heroic. It reads better just as "a helicopter flying a reconnaissance mission." Maybe you could even add "along a rugged coast," to make it seem a little more courageous. In graf 3, second to last line, I would note that the motto of the Coast Guard is "semper paratus" -- "always prepared" In either Latin or English, that would sound a little better than "always ready." Air Force The sentence in line 4 of graf 2("As Commander in Chief") lacks an adequate lead-in. I recognize this as the standard formulation about Presidents facing the agony of sending young men off to war, but it isn't adequately set up. Graf 4, line3-4needs a little work. "reason for living and dying for" is not a very poetic or senstive expression of the inspirational quality of the flag. How about this, done on a typewriter with no easy turning back, as with a word processor: "The red, white, and blue standard has, for two centuries, been a call to greatness. The men and women who have gone before you in the great tradition of the Coast Guard have passed a legacy on to you -- a legacy of service and sacrifice that I know you will uphold." That's not particularly good either, but at least it avoids un-euphonious word choices that trivialize the speaker ("for for"). Finally, on the second page, two little things. The use of "pledge" on line 2 of the first graf needs to be set up better. Something like "I am committed to upholding the words and the sacred meaning of the pledge." Also, I wonder, from a sexism point of view, about the use of "airmen" in the 2nd graf.
