I'll never forget a scene repeated over and over throughout
the campaign. Our plane would bank and make yet another approach
to another city. Barbara and I would look out the window and see
the beautiful American landscape. From that altitude you can get
quite a reflection of this country and its values.
From city to city, it was always the same. You can see
schools and houses from up there. The huge shopping centers with
their acres of paved parking. All the symbols of a prosperous

America. But what especially struck Barbara and -I- were the vast
number of churches and synagogues. It never ceased to amaze us.
And those churches and synagogues represent the men and
women who have a commitment to family and community. They
represent men and women of faith who have been willing to give to
others not just take for themselves and in doing so have made our
country great.
We all know that too many Americans are free-falling through
society without hope or faith, disconnected from a healthy,
close-knit community and family. As a result, we see the

heartbreak of drugs and homelessness, teenage pregnancy,
illiteracy and broken homes.
We have learned that government's ability to make a
difference is limited. We know that government can't rebuild a
family or reclaim a sense of neighborhood. During the past two
decades we have spent more money on more social programs than at
any time in our history. And still, the same problems remain.
Yet, today, we see as we have for over two hundred years
rescuing hands heroically reaching out in communities across the
nation. People in need are being pulled to safety by loving,
dedicated individuals who care not only for themselves but for
their fellow man, and for their country. They know that any
definition of a successful life in America must include serving
others.
To live a life of real meaning, you must live a life of
values. That means loving your neighbor enough to give of
yourself. In Matthew 5:16 Christ said: "Let your light shine
before men so that they may see your good works and glorify your
Father in Heaven.' "
The Christian community already knows the value of engaging
in the lives of those in need. That's why I ask you to "let your
light shine" a thousandfold. I ask you to help me in the Points
3
of Light Initiative, a national movement to overcome the
disintegration of communities, large and small. This initiative
will call Americans to action, to claim society's problems as
their own, to identify, enlarge and replicate those service
initiatives already working, and to discover and encourage new
leaders in national service.
The work of many American churches and religious groups has
already accomplished much. In fact, there is no problem in
America that is not being solved somewhere, thanks in part to
your dedication.
Through the Points of Light Initiative, we want to encourage
what works. We must spread the word about good people and
promising approaches that are helping others, to encourage
everyone to expand their service efforts so that we can most
effectively reach those who need us most.
There is still so much to be done for the homeless, the
hungry and the illiterate -- to name only a few -- and you can
play a vital role. Together, we can build a better America
...
for ourselves, for our children, for all Americans.

ON NATIONAL SERVICE
Not long ago, I addressed about four thousand young people
on the South Lawn of the White House. As I stood ready to begin
the speech, one of the young men on the stage with me said,
"There's a lot of people here." He was right -- there were
people almost as far as I could see. So I began the speech, a
call to action to national service. As I spoke, I saw that
within the sea of faces before me were problems and possibilities
as diverse as the nation itself.
too negative
We all know that too many Americans are free-falling through
society, disconnected from a healthy, close-knit community and
family. As a result, we see the heartbreak of joblessness, drugs
and violent crime, homelessness, teenage pregnancy, suicide,
illiteracy and broken homes.
We know too that government can't rebuild a family or
reclaim a sense of neighborhood. During the past two decades we
have spent more money on more social programs than at any time in
our history. Things are not getting better.
Yet as communities are overwhelmed by the burden of
individuals needing help, we see rescuing hands reaching out.
They are being pulled to safety by loving, dedicated individuals
who care not only for their fellow man, but for their country and
themselves. They know that any definition of a successful life
in America must include serving others.
To live a life of real meaning, you've got to live a life of
values. That means loving your neighbor enough to give of
yourself. As Our Lord said so beautifully: "Let your light shine
before men so that they may see your good works and glorify your
Father in Heaven."
The Christian community already knows the value of engaging
in the lives of those in need -- but I ask you to "let your light
shine" a thousandfold. I ask you to help me in the Points of
Light Initiative, a national movement to overcome the
disintegration of communities, large and small. This initiative
will call Americans to action, identify, enlarge and replicate
those service initiatives already working, and discover and
encourage new leaders in national service.
The work of many American churches and religious groups has
already accomplished much. In fact, there is no problem in
America that is not being solved somewhere, thanks in part to
your dedication. Through this initiative, we want to encourage
what works. We must spread the word about good programs that are
helping people, to encourage others to expand their service
initiatives, to network with other community groups so we can
most effectively reach those who need us the most.
There is still so much to be done for the homeless, the
hungry and the illiterate -- to name only a few -- and you can
play a vital role. Together, we can build a better America
...
for ourselves, for our children, for all Americans.
